Chapter 760 Paying Homage to the Director

Wei Liangbi was alright; he was in charge of the Second Operations Division and it was normal for him to be frequently at headquarters. However, this was the first time Ning Zhiheng, the head of the Second Operations Division, had appeared at headquarters since Wei Liangbi left a year ago.

Because they were afraid that Tan Jinhui would run into too many acquaintances at headquarters and give himself away in conversation, the two bureau chiefs and Sun Jiacheng all forbade Tan Jinhui from appearing at headquarters.

The officer, a veteran of the Military Intelligence Bureau, immediately recognized Ning Zhiheng and quickly stood at attention again, saluting and saying, "Hello, Director Ning!"

Ning Zhiheng nodded slightly and returned the salute. The vehicle drove into the headquarters compound, and the two men got out of the car and walked quickly toward the director's office.

The headquarters has changed a lot in the past year, mainly due to the increase in personnel. As soon as Ning Zhiheng and Wei Liangbi entered the headquarters, they immediately attracted a lot of attention. As they passed by, the lower-ranking officers stood at attention and saluted. Ning Zhiheng nodded in acknowledgment and soon arrived at the director's office.

Upon knocking and entering, Secretary Liu was not surprised to see Ning Zhiheng, as he clearly knew of Ning Zhiheng's arrival.

He greeted her with a smile, "Director Ning, the Director is waiting for you, please come in!"

After saying that, he looked at Wei Liangbi and said politely, "Director Wei, please come to my office and rest for a while."

The implication was clear: the director wanted to meet with Ning Zhiheng alone, and Wei Liangbi quickly nodded in agreement.

Ning Zhiheng gestured for him to wait a moment, and then followed Secretary Liu into the bureau chief's office.

As soon as Ning Zhiheng entered the office, the bureau chief stood up, walked forward with a big smile, and before Ning Zhiheng could even stand at attention and salute, the bureau chief grabbed Ning Zhiheng's hand.

"Zhiheng, you must be tired from your journey!"

The director's tone was gentle and his attitude was kind, which made Ning Zhiheng feel flattered. Although he had been a member of the Military Intelligence Bureau for a long time and was highly appreciated by the director, he never dared to neglect the hierarchy between superiors and subordinates. The director had never been so friendly before.

He quickly replied with a smile, "There's no need to talk about hardship. I was just busy with some matters after receiving orders, so I'm a few days late. Please forgive me, Director!"

The bureau chief patted his hand before letting go, gesturing for him to sit down and talk slowly. Then he instructed Secretary Liu, "Notify all departments to hold a meeting!"

Secretary Liu nodded in acceptance and turned to leave. Ning Zhiheng sat down to the left of the bureau chief, his posture upright, awaiting instructions.

"When did you get back?" the bureau chief asked gently.

"In the early hours of this morning."

The bureau chief nodded in satisfaction. Once Ning Zhiheng arrived in Chongqing, his whereabouts could not be kept from the bureau chief.

"Did you see Chung-shin?"

Ning Zhiheng was taken aback, then nodded and said respectfully, "Yes, I have already met with the Vice-Captain!"

The director smiled and said, "That's good, it saves me from saying anything more. Zhiheng, our Military Intelligence Bureau is in a difficult situation right now. The Chairman has given us a death order: we must eliminate the Japanese spies lurking in Chongqing as soon as possible. This time, we're counting on you!"

Ning Zhiheng quickly nodded and agreed, "Please rest assured, Director, I will do my best to eliminate the Japanese spies as soon as possible, and I will not let you down."

"Good! I have confidence in you. To be honest, in terms of counter-espionage, everyone in the Military Intelligence Bureau recognizes your abilities. This time, it was Gu Zhengqi and Bian Xiangnan who insisted, which is why I made the decision to transfer you back."

Ning Zhiheng smiled slightly. He knew very well what Gu Zhengqi and the others were thinking. They were all waiting for him to come back and take over their hot potato!

"It's all thanks to the kindness of my seniors. I'm still quite inexperienced and have much to learn from the department heads!"

"You!" the bureau chief said with a smile, pointing at Ming Heng with his finger. "Everyone outside says you're the ruthless King of Hell, but I know you're a slippery little devil."

Ning Zhiheng smiled without saying a word at the Director's feigned friendliness. He knew that they were about to get down to business, and the Director was not usually such an easy person to talk to.

Sure enough, the bureau chief's smile faded, his expression turned serious, and his tone became deep as he asked Ning Zhiheng, "You just returned from Shanghai, tell me about the situation there!"

Ning Zhiheng's expression also turned serious, and he straightened up before asking, "Is the Director referring to the defeat at Shanghai Station?"
