Chapter Six: There is Still Hope

Liang Deyou rushed into the house, and Ning Zhiheng gripped his Browning pistol tightly and quickly followed.

The room was a scene of utter devastation, ravaged by the explosion. Eight bodies lay scattered in the middle of the room. Six of them, dressed in civilian clothes, were the operatives, while the other two, wearing ordinary coarse cloth jackets, were likely the targets of the mission.

At this moment, Huang Taoguang heard the explosion outside the courtyard and knew something was wrong, so he ran in.

Liang Deyou looked around and angrily yelled at Huang Taoguang, "What the hell is going on? Wasn't it just Fu Cheng? Did the other two just fall from the sky? Didn't you guys monitor him for a month? All my brothers are dead! You have to give me, the Action Section, an explanation!"

Huang Taoguang was also completely dumbfounded: "This is impossible! We haven't found anything unusual! How could two more accomplices suddenly appear? Have these two accomplices been hiding in the same courtyard for the past month? This doesn't make sense!"

Liang Deyou stamped his foot and sighed, "The intelligence section provided incorrect information, causing heavy casualties in the action team. Neither of us can escape responsibility. How are we going to explain this to our superiors?"

Liang Deyou had no powerful backers and had worked his way up from the bottom of the military over the years. His journey to where he was today had been incredibly difficult, marked by constant struggle and trepidation. However, recent operations had suffered repeated setbacks, with many of his men losing their lives. This time, he was truly responsible for the consequences, and one can only imagine how frustrated he felt.

Huang Taoguang was also having a headache. It could be said that the intelligence department bore most of the responsibility for this accident. After a month of surveillance, they hadn't discovered that there were other accomplices in the target's home, which was simply unacceptable.

Ning Zhiheng stepped forward to examine the bodies. Such a violent explosion in such a confined space, coupled with the previous gunfight, had left these people injured, and unfortunately, none of them survived.

One of the Japanese spies' bodies was lying headfirst in the bedroom doorway. It appears he witnessed his accomplice being arrested in the living room, then raised his gun to attack the operatives, only to be wounded in retaliation. In desperation, he threw two American grenades, ultimately taking them all down with him.

"Damn it, two men for six of our brothers, what a fucking madman!" Liang Deyou said through gritted teeth.

"Is Fu Cheng the target among these two?" Ning Zhiheng looked at the two Japanese spies wearing coarse cloth jackets; their faces were disfigured and grayed by the explosion. He had only seen a blurry photo of them earlier and wasn't sure if it was Fu Cheng.

Hearing the sound, Huang Taoguang walked over to examine them carefully, and suddenly shouted, "It's not Fu Cheng! Neither of these two people is Fu Cheng!"

Upon hearing this, Liang Deyou instantly came to life. He rushed into the bedroom. Neither of these two people was Fu Cheng, which meant that Fu Cheng might still be in the house.

The living room was full of dead bodies; the only place where someone could possibly hide was the bedroom. Ning Zhiheng immediately realized this and rushed into the bedroom as well.

He was also worried about Liang Deyou's safety. Although this older brother was not talkative, he had treated him well and was a reliable boss. Naturally, he didn't want anything to happen to Liang Deyou.

Both men held guns, ready to retaliate at the first sign of trouble. But the bedroom was empty; the space was small. A few simple pieces of furniture—a bed, a wardrobe, a long table and chairs, and a lamp on the bedside table—were all there; there was no room for even one person to hide.

They checked under the bed and found it empty. The two exchanged a disappointed glance. Could it be that Fu Cheng wasn't home at all?

Huang Taoguang cautiously entered the bedroom, and was utterly disappointed by what he saw inside.

Ning Zhiheng asked, "Are the surveillance personnel certain that Fu Cheng didn't leave the house after returning home?"

"He definitely didn't go out. There were two groups of people monitoring him at the same time; it's impossible for both to have overlooked him. So how could he just disappear?" Huang Taoguang was also baffled. The intelligence team members were also highly trained elites; they couldn't possibly have made such a big mistake.

"Then it can only be in this room. There must be something wrong. Let's search carefully again." Liang Deyou was very unwilling. At this moment, he was really glad that Fu Cheng was not dead. As long as he was alive, there was hope of arresting him and there was still room to salvage the situation.

Ning Zhiheng ordered his team to search the yard thoroughly, while he focused his attention on the bedroom. He felt that the bedroom was a person's most private place, and if someone had secret items or a secret passage, they would definitely keep them close to themselves. This way, he would have time to react and respond promptly in case of an emergency.

"Move all this furniture out, and carefully inspect every single wall and floor tile. Search every inch of it!" Ning Zhiheng ordered his team.

The team members worked together to move the furniture. Suddenly, when one of the team members was moving a wardrobe, the wardrobe slid to one side before he even put any force into it.

"Sir, there's a problem!" the team member shouted excitedly.

Liang Deyou stepped forward and pushed hard, and the entire wardrobe opened like a door. A doorway was revealed in the wall behind it.

"There's a passage!" Everyone perked up, and Liang Deyou was especially happy. He waved to signal, and two team members cautiously and slowly entered.

Everyone waited anxiously for a while, then a team member shouted from inside the doorway: "Captain, everything is safe!"

The group quickly entered one after another. The doorway was very short, only about two meters long. It connected to a room behind it. At this moment, the team member who had been there earlier reported, "Captain, this room is also empty, and the doors are all open. The person must have run away!"

Liang Deyou did not give up hope; he could not abandon any hope as long as there was a glimmer of hope: "Everyone, split up and search; we cannot overlook any clue!"
