Chapter Thirty-Three: Extracting Value

"Captain Ning, the interrogation has been going on for a long time. Let the doctor check the prisoner's condition. If he can hold on, you can continue the interrogation." Jiang Wende gestured for the doctor to come forward and examine the prisoner.

Huang Xiansheng had been tortured too severely before. Although he received some basic medical treatment, Ning Zhiheng continued to interrogate him for two more hours.

Jiang Wende feared that Ning Zhiheng, this hothead, would relentlessly pursue and attack him, refusing to let go. He worried that the prisoner, who had finally managed to speak, wouldn't be able to withstand such pressure.

After all, while the credit goes to the Operations Division for the prisoner's confession, the Interrogation Division, as a supporting unit, also gets a share of the credit.

The on-duty doctor carefully examined Huang Xiansheng's physical condition and said, "His body cannot withstand any more interrogation. His wounds are still bleeding, his vital signs are declining, his body temperature is rising, and he will soon have a high fever!"

After saying that, he turned to Jiang Wende with a wry smile and said, "Captain Jiang, it seems we need to apply for another dose of sulfadiazine, otherwise I can't guarantee he can pull through this!"

Jiang Wende was immediately stumped. Sulfonamides were only recently developed and were the most effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs in the world, with very limited quantities available in China.

Each one is worth more than gold, yet they are so rare that only military intelligence agencies have the means to purchase them.

When Fu Cheng was interrogated last time, he applied for one. Now he wants to apply again. I can imagine the look on his boss's face when he sees the application report. He'll probably give him a good scolding again.

He turned to Ning Zhiheng and said, "Captain Ning, our interrogation section is facing a tight quota. Perhaps your action section should step in and resolve this!"

Ning Zhiheng was perfectly aware of the situation and wasn't about to be taken advantage of. Besides, he secretly hoped that Huang Xiansheng, that traitor and Japanese spy, would die.

This would be a good opportunity to examine his memories and obtain the most accurate information. To be honest, he was still somewhat skeptical of Huang Xiansheng's account and needed to verify it further.

"Captain Jiang, you're exaggerating the prisoner's physical condition. Saying he needs more than one breath right off the bat—you're really rolling in money!" He stood up, gathered his belongings, and prepared to leave. "It's just a suspect; using the best Yunnan Baiyao is already more than enough for him."

Jiang Wende's eyebrows twitched with anger. This kid was slippery and unyielding, neither soft nor hard tactics worked. After all, he was in the interrogation department; if he died here, it would be their responsibility.

“We can’t guarantee he can survive the high fever that’s about to hit. It doesn’t matter to us, it’s just a scolding, but it would be a huge loss for your operations department!” Jiang Wende’s tone was as cold as ice.

"Anyway, he's already confessed everything he needed to, so there's no point in talking about him anymore. He's dead, so let's all just go to sleep. Life and death are in the hands of fate, it's up to his destiny," Ning Zhiheng said calmly.

Neither of them was one to back down, and they both stubbornly waited for the other to give in. The on-duty doctor could only watch from the sidelines, and the situation became awkward once again.

Anyway, Ning Zhiheng wasn't afraid of these dirty-handling jailers. After all, although they were more senior, their foundation and background were far inferior. If he really wanted to deal with them, he would have plenty of ways to do so!

"I'll pay!" came another faint voice.

You're like a savior sent by a monkey! You always manage to break the ice in awkward situations!

"I have money in my bank safe deposit box!"

"I don't want to die!" Huang Xiansheng muttered, his eyes lifeless.

"Officer Huang, let me remind you, the money in your safe is already state property, and you have no right to distribute it." Ning Zhiheng looked at Huang Xiansheng with disdain. As a traitor and a Japanese spy, didn't he have any awareness at all?

"I don't want to die, please!" Huang Xiansheng pleaded for his life. Those who have abandoned their faith have lost all self-respect!

Having served in the military for many years, he knew that the most common cause of death for soldiers in war was infection after injury. This was because current domestic medical conditions simply lacked effective treatments!

His injuries covered his entire body, and ordinary anti-inflammatory drugs were not very effective. If even one area became infected, the chances of death would be extremely high. He didn't want to die unconscious in this dark and gloomy basement.

"Alright, I'll make an exception and help you this time. But Staff Officer Huang, how you behave in the future will depend on your performance. Don't let me down!" Ning Zhiheng had a slight contemptuous smile on his face.

Nothing matters more than life and death; as long as you're afraid of dying, things are easy to handle. I believe there's still some value to be extracted from Huang Xiansheng.

Besides, this is our first time working with the interrogation department, and we don't want to strain the relationship too much. If we really fall out with the interrogation department, we'll still have to deal with them in the future, so it's better to take a step back today.
