Chongming, life is inherently a wilderness!

Chongming, life is inherently a wilderness!

"Chongming, life is inherently a wilderness!"

45.

The little incident in the kitchen was unknown to anyone except the couple.

The weather on the southern slopes is getting colder and colder, and the weather forecast says it will snow tonight.

Chongming and Lanjian returned to their room early. Lanjian was playing a game on her iPad. When Chongming got closer, he realized that she was playing a game that looked very "perverted".

"Should we click on the immortals?" Meng Lanjian, engrossed in the game of Connect Four, was completely unaware of Chongming's approach.

"Who is this?" Chongming couldn't help but remind her when he saw her getting stuck on the match-3 game, "Can't you eliminate these two?"

"This is Daiyu, and that's Li Wan! How do I eliminate these two? Are you face-blind?!" Meng Lanjian finally clicked on the hint, giving up on Chongming's ability to spot her talent. After using the hint once, the system, having exhausted all other options, reorganized the existing array. Lanjian clicked her tongue, "I knew it!"

When Chongming saw the colorful little grids on the screen, Lanjian teased him for being face-blind, and his competitive spirit led him to join the battle.

That night, two young people, both under thirty, played a game called "Dream of the Red Chamber Connect" until their eyes were blurry, before reluctantly turning off the lights and going to sleep.

The next morning, Lan Jian woke up, drew back the curtains, and saw a vast expanse of white outside the window. She almost thought she had gone blind from playing games the night before.

"Chongming, Chongming!"

Chongming, who was shaving, had a ring of white foam around his lips as he hurriedly came out of the bathroom. "What's wrong?"

Lan Jian saw his "white beard" and smiled, "It's snowing outside! Why is your chin covered in snow too?"

Chongming strode to the window, grabbed Meng Lanjian, and rubbed foam onto her face. "Yeah, my chin is covered in snow too. Let's have a snowball fight!"

Meng Lanjian wasn't annoyed; she smiled and dodged away, but Chongming held her close, pressing his face against hers relentlessly, the scent of lime and mint aftershave spreading across her cheeks. Outside, snow was falling; inside, people were playing and laughing.

Good morning, Chongming!

Good morning, Lan Jian!

The long-awaited snow on the southern slopes delighted Chongming and Lanjian. After the snow stopped in the afternoon, the snow was already almost up to Lanjian's calves. The snowplow finally cleared a road, and Chongming drove Lanjian to Shenhuali to see the snow.

"Won't this snow melt soon?" Lan Jian was a little anxious. The southern slopes are not as dry and cold as the northern slopes. The snow would be no fun once it melted into water in the damp and cold weather.

"No, the weather forecast says the snow will continue until New Year's Eve." Chongming glanced at Lanjian and saw her gripping the seatbelt tightly and staring ahead. He smiled and reassured her, "How about we stay in Shenhuali tonight? The sheets and blankets in the master bedroom were prepared by Aunt Lian the day before we left. Mom knew we were going before we left, so she packed a bunch of things in the trunk for me."

"Great! Didn't you say last time that Shenhuali is especially beautiful in winter?" Lan Jian recalled his drunken murmurs and felt a longing in her heart. "How about we roast some chestnuts later?"

Chongming suddenly laughed out loud when he thought of the raw chestnuts in the trunk. "Speaking of chestnuts, I remember something funny."

Meng Lanjian, quick-witted, replied, "Is it also related to your childhood friend who developed male contraceptives?"

"Yes, his name is Xie Nandu."

The Xie family's backyard, the familiar little oven, the familiar aroma of chestnuts, the familiar Xie Nandu.

Chongming sat leisurely by the Lanjian River, cutting fresh chestnuts with a knife. Xie Nandu diligently fanned the fire in the stove. He heard his wife telling the story of how she and Chongming roasted a sack of chestnuts that they couldn't finish. He delivered chestnuts to every household, but later other residents complained that the chestnuts he delivered caused them constipation.

Amidst the gentle, mocking laughter of his two wives, he shouted at the top of his lungs out the second-floor window: "Xie Tangqian! You..."

Did you fart enough? Come help your Uncle DouDou eat some chestnuts!

A short while later, a clear, loud child's voice came from inside the window, "Dad! I'm done pooping! Where's my toy car?"

"With so many cars around, how am I supposed to know which one you're asking about? Your Uncle Dou Dou and Aunt Dou Dou are here, aren't you going to get out and see the pretty auntie?"

Lan Jian overheard the conversation between the father and son and asked Xie Nandu's wife, Wang Xiyu, with some doubt, "The Uncle Dou Dou he mentioned, could it be... Chongming?"

Wang Xiyu and Xie Nandu were childhood sweethearts and married for many years, so she was very familiar with her childhood friend. She knew Chongming's temperament; he definitely wouldn't want his wife to know about his nickname through others. Wang Xiyu kept him in suspense, "Isn't Chongming's sister-in-law coming back soon? When you hear his sister-in-law's nickname, you'll know what's going on."

Lan Jian's mind flashed with the cartoon image of "McDull, the Kung Fu Kids," and when she looked at Chongming, the traces of suppressed laughter on her lips were very obvious.

Chongming glanced at her, as if asking, "What are you laughing at?"

Lan Jian smiled and shook his head. Just as he was about to speak, the small gate to the backyard of the Xie family opened, and a little boy wearing gray and red overalls stood proudly in the middle of the grass. He saw Lan Jian sitting next to his mother and Uncle Dou Dou next to his father. The little boy Xie Tangqian, who had just run down excitedly, shyly ran into Uncle Dou Dou's arms the moment he met Lan Jian's eyes.

Chongming weighed Xie Tangqian, whom he hadn't seen for some time, in his hand. Seeing that Xie Tangqian's attention was focused on Lan Jian, Chongming stared at him and asked, "Uncle Dou Dou, is this pretty aunt your wife?"

Chongming glanced at Lanjian. She was pretty, but she didn't quite have the air of an "auntie." He shook his head. "She's a auntie, not an auntie yet."

"Oh~" Xie Tangqian exclaimed in a precocious manner, "So she's your girlfriend!"

girlfriend.

Lan Jian was struck by the word and couldn't help but smile at Xie Tangqian. "Hello, your name is Xie Tangqian, right? My name is Meng Lanjian. Lan is the 'lan' in orchid and Jian is the 'jian' in stream."

“You can call me Lanjian Jiejie!” Wang Xiyu taught her son to remember his name. “Xijian means a mountain stream.”

Wow! Is that orchid blooming in the stream?

Children's thoughts are always innocent and pure. Lan Jian listened happily and said yes, then pointed to Chongming, "Do you know what Uncle Doudou's name means?"

Xie Tangqian shook his head, about to answer, when his nose tickled. "Achoo!"

He sneezed loudly, startling his parents. Afraid that their child would get cold, Xie Nandu carried his son into the house, and Wang Xiyu followed. The large backyard was suddenly left with only a small red clay stove and a couple looking at each other in bewilderment.

"Should we just leave?"

Chongming and Lanjian were stopped by Xie Nandu halfway. Xie Nandu started distributing chestnuts from house to house again. Chongming saw him from afar and wanted to take a detour, but Xie Nandu hit his car with a snowball. He had no choice but to stop the car and go home with Xie Nandu. He reheated the chestnuts that Xie Nandu hadn't given away, peeled the raw chestnuts that his mother had brought him, and introduced Lanjian to his family.

After achieving his goals of recognizing faces and doors, Chongming said in a serious tone, "Since you already know where the Xie family's gate is, we won't have to worry about going hungry anymore."

"Okay." Lan Jian nodded. "I never thought I'd still be able to get help from everyone's families even after I got married. That's great."

"The head chef at the Xie family is an excellent eel cook. Next time, let him make it for you. He also makes a stir-fried crab with rice cakes, which you like, don't you?"

Lan Jian was led outside by Chong Ming's hand. The two families were neighbors, but their houses were quite far apart. The road in front of their house hadn't been cleared of snow yet, and the couple planned to walk back, chatting as they went. Chong Ming had been roasting chestnuts, and the warmth of his palms soothed Lan Jian's hands.

Lan Jian heard a soft "plop" sound, looked up, and saw that the pine branches not far away were bent over by the weight of the snow.

The snow fell on the slender branches at the bottom, and the branches, unable to bear the weight, shook the soft snow off onto the ground covered by thick snow. The snow blended into the whiteness, and heaven and earth seemed to become one. Only the moon overhead could not wait for the night and shone faintly in the thin mist.

The birch forest was deep in the mountains. Lan Jian felt that the moonlight and snow alone were beautiful enough. She turned to Chongming and said, "This scene reminds me of a line Zhang Dai wrote about snow."

Chongming replied without hesitation, “The mountains are covered in snow, the bright moon shines through them, the moon cannot illuminate them, and the snow appears dull and white.”

"Oh, an expert?" Lan Jian raised an eyebrow, released Chongming's hand, and ran forward a few steps. Her old habit of wanting to rush into the snow had resurfaced, but facing down wouldn't look good; she was a married woman and needed to be more composed—

Chongming looked at Meng Lanjian, that little madman, turned around, faced him, took a few steps back, spread his arms, and fell backward.

"careful!"

"Hmm!"

No matter how thick the snow piled up, it only fell for a day and a night, which was not thick enough. The grass in autumn and winter was also bare. How could Meng Lanjian not feel pain when he fell on the back of his head?

Chongming rushed over to see if she had hurt herself from the fall.

—But then a snowball hit him head-on.

Meng Lanjian, who grew up in the icy and snowy north of Luan, was far more wary than Chongming, a southerner who hadn't seen winter snow for many years. She attracted Chongming's attention with a soft call, lured him closer, and then smacked him in the face with snow.

Snowflakes clung to Chongming's face like icing sugar; now it wasn't just his chin that was snowing.

Meng Lanjian laughed lightly without restraint. Before Chongming could recover, she grabbed another snowball and threw it at him while spouting off a bunch of nonsense.

“Chongming, life is a wilderness!” She flicked her arm, scattering snowflakes in the air, their chill piercing the always upright and proud Chongming. He was disheveled and bruised by her white snow, but he just stared blankly as she continued with a bright smile, “So no matter how careful we are, we are bound to face the day when we bravely take a risk.”

After saying what she wanted to say, Meng Lanjian dusted herself off and stood up, moving with surprising agility across the snow. Chongming caught up with her and pulled her into his arms. Lanjian thought he was going to kiss her, but the next second—

"ah!"

A cold snowball fell from his collar into his neck. Meng Lanjian was furious after being retaliated against by Chongming. A great battle was about to break out.

"Bang!"

Chongming was hit precisely on the back of the head.

"Who dares to ambush me?"

Chongming turned around in a fit of rage, only to see a young girl in a snow-white long fur coat standing behind him with her pointed chin raised, having watched him and Lanjian play for who knows how long.

"Of course it's me."

Without even seeing the person's face clearly, Chongming's anger turned to joy, and he reached out to catch the girl who was fluttering her wings like a little sparrow.

"Welcome home, my lady!"
