Chapter 1 Mercury Retrograde

With a bright smile, Jiang Wanwan walked briskly out of the campus, finally graduating from university. Thinking of her parents who had worked hard for most of their lives, she realized she could now support herself.

Fresh out of school, Jiang Wanwan was full of ambition and energy.

Three months later, in the break room of a certain insurance company.

"Sister Zhang, next time our team hires, please don't hire any greenhorns who just graduated. Jiang Wanwan hasn't made a single sale in three months, and she'll probably be packing her bags and leaving this week. What a waste of all our efforts! She's also dragged down the entire team's performance!"

"Exactly, exactly! Someone like Jiang Wanwan, who just graduated, has no money, no connections, and no background, can't just commit suicide to buy a job and get a permanent position!"

"I initially thought she was good-looking and highly educated, so I figured she could definitely succeed in sales. But alas!"

Jiang Wanwan peeked out from around the corner and watched the three walk away, then pouted and couldn't help but think of:

At the job fair, these three people pulled me aside and launched into a long explanation, saying that doing insurance marketing was a noble cause, almost to the point of claiming it was about saving humanity and the planet.

They even said that earning a million a month is not a dream, and that you can easily make tens of thousands a month just by doing some casual business.

Then, Jiang Wanwan, with a dream of earning a million-dollar monthly salary, became an intern insurance salesperson. After joining the company, she began a month-long training program, learning about products and terms, as well as various sales techniques.

Actually, Jiang Wanwan was reluctant, but the company provided a subsidy of 3,000 yuan to interns for the first three months.

She reluctantly stayed to learn, and also to see if she was suitable for the job, after all, it could earn her a million a month!

Jiang Wanwan sat at her workstation, staring blankly at the images of millions of celebrities on the wall, her mind blank.

I am indeed just average in ability, as they say, with no connections or background. Sometimes hard work is useless; I finally got a small order a few days ago, but someone else snatched it away.

The order was placed, the customer transferred the money, and the policy was signed, but then they changed their mind during the 15-day cooling-off period. Changing your mind and not buying isn't a big deal; it's a voluntary transaction.

Just as Jiang Wanwan was reviewing the unsuccessful transaction, the client sent her a WeChat message.

"I'm sorry, Xiaowan! A friend of mine has a son who also sells insurance. His mother has come to my door several times to ask me to support her son's job. I have no choice but to accept this."

"Auntie, thank you for your honesty. I completely understand your actions. I hope we'll have the opportunity to work together again in the future!"

The opportunity for cooperation has been lost because Jiang Wanwan failed her end-of-month assessment.

Jiang Wanwan quietly tidied up her personal belongings on her desk, while her colleagues around her seemed to take it all in stride, busy with their own tasks.

Jiang Wanwan packed her things and originally wanted to say a proper goodbye to everyone in the group, but unfortunately, everyone was in a hurry and didn't notice her.

She forced a smile, deciding not to delay anyone any longer, and walked towards the elevator with her things in her arms.

"Jiang Wanwan!"

Jiang Wanwan had just pressed the elevator button when she turned around and saw Sister Zhang standing not far away, greeting her.

"Sister Zhang!"

"You're a good girl, you'll find a good job, keep it up!"

Jiang Wanwan looked at the person who had specially run out to see her off not far away, stepped into the elevator, and slowly smiled: "Thank you, Sister Zhang! I will work hard! Goodbye, Sister Zhang!"

"Sister Zhang, the army camp remains but the soldiers come and go. I didn't expect you to come out specifically to see Jiang Wanwan off!" A passing group member nudged Zhang Li's shoulder and joked.

Zhang Li pushed up his glasses and said with a smile, "Who doesn't like a hardworking child? Who knows, she might even need to buy insurance from me someday."

Jiang Wanwan carried a pile of things back to her rented room. She first counted her savings, which were only enough to pay next month's rent. Thinking back to her ambitious words when she first graduated, she felt a pang of sadness.

As expected, ideals are often grand, but reality is often harsh.

Right now, I desperately need someone to chat with, to change my mood, so that tomorrow can be another beautiful day.

Jiang Wanwan lay on the bed and took out her phone. Just as she was about to send a message to her boyfriend of one month, he sent her a WeChat message as if by telepathy. She opened it.

"Wanwan, I've thought about it carefully. I was too impulsive and immature back then. Let's just call it quits!"

Jiang Wanwan stared at her phone blankly, then sat up straight, holding the phone in both hands. She typed and deleted, and finally, all her thoughts converged into a question mark.

"Let's break up! You didn't really like me that much anyway, so let's part amicably!"

"?" Jiang Wanwan sent another question mark, followed by a big red exclamation mark, and was blocked.

Jiang Wanwan sat on the bed, not feeling too sad, but she couldn't figure it out after thinking about it for a long time.

It was Zhou Yu who took the initiative to pursue her. He had a lot of tricks up his sleeve when he pursued her, such as making her breakfast every day, bombarding her with sweet words, sending her flowers and snacks, and always sticking around her, rain or shine.

Jiang Wanwan saw his sincerity and decided to give it a try with him, but before they could even get to know each other properly, she was suddenly told that they were breaking up.

He was the one who said he liked her, and he was also the one who said he wanted to break up. Even if Jiang Wanwan didn't really like him, she still had to find out the truth.

Jiang Wanwan skillfully dialed a string of numbers on her phone. This person used to call her several times a day, so she had memorized the phone number even if she didn't want to.

"Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable." Jiang Wanwan inwardly groaned as her phone number was blocked.

Men are so fickle. Before, a single phone call would have made him rush over to see me, even if it meant braving wind and rain. Now, he can't even be bothered to answer a single phone call.

Today is truly a Mercury retrograde day; I got fired from work and my relationship is going badly.

Jiang Wanwan put down her phone, touched her stomach, and prepared to cook dinner. She nearly fell headfirst onto the floor the moment she got out of bed; she gripped the sheets tightly with her hands and slowly shifted her weight to steady herself.

In the kitchen, Jiang Wanwan had just opened the refrigerator when a glass jar inside, as if it had grown legs, slammed down on her feet. Jiang Wanwan instinctively jumped back, narrowly escaping injury.

After putting on gloves and sweeping the broken glass into the trash can, I started making dinner.

Jiang Wanwan didn’t know if it was just her imagination, but she always felt that the things in the kitchen were like sentient beings. They would either hit her hands with knives or frying pans on her head.

Even cracking an egg can break a bowl; isn't that outrageous?

It seems that dinner is not suitable to be cooked at home tonight, let's eat out!

As soon as Jiang Wanwan stepped out of the kitchen, the tiles on the kitchen wall clattered and fell to the floor, startling her so much that she quickly fled the kitchen.

Before leaving the house, turn off the gas, water, and electricity.

Jiang Wanwan stood in front of the door, holding her head in her hands, scratching her scalp repeatedly. Finally, she decided to take a walk around the neighborhood to dispel her bad luck.

Tired from walking around, she ate dinner at a nearby small restaurant, but unexpectedly, one bottle of beer knocked her out. Jiang Wanwan staggered to the bill, but after finally managing to scan the QR code with her phone, the screen flashed and the phone shut down!

Sure enough, life doesn't treat you any better just because you're a girl.
