Chapter 8: Still Alive?

Before Yao Tongjia could finish thinking, the door banged open again. Yao's mother went to open the door, and the village secretary and the village chief and his wife came in.

Aunt Xu and Aunt Xue walked behind, holding each other's hands, clearly frightened. The village secretary and village head asked in unison, "Where is Xiao Yan?"

Aunt Yao immediately looked into the room: "Still sleeping? What's wrong?"

"You mean, Yanzi is still alive and well?" Aunt Xu and Aunt Xue asked at the same time. They were really scared to death this morning and ran home in fright.

They also felt that Yanzi was such a good person who had saved so many people. Even if she was a ghost, she was a good ghost. How could they run away?

However, their fear of ghosts was deeply ingrained. Even though they were two women, they were still very afraid to come back here, so they could only bring their husbands with them.

Unexpectedly, Xiao Yan was still alive. Just then, Xiao Yan walked out and said, "So the ghost Auntie was talking about is me?"

Aunt Xu and Aunt Xue both took a few steps back. Aunt Xue asked hesitantly, "Are you alright?"

It was Yao Ma who helped Xiao Yan sit down: "Yanzi is alright now. It looked dangerous with the branch stuck in her chest, but it was only because it pierced her chest and hit a blood vessel that she bled so much."

"Fortunately, Yanzi's heart is in a different position than others, so nothing serious happened. However, she lost too much blood, and her body is still very weak!"

These words made Xiao Yan glance at Yao Yanxin, but she quickly lowered her head again. She was still a little dizzy from blood loss! She knew nothing.

"Are you really alright? That's great! I thought Yanzi wasn't going to make it this time..."

At this point, Aunt Xu spat out her saliva: "Good luck and prosperity, all because of my stinky mouth!"

Aunt Xu even pretended to slap her lips a few times: "It's alright, it's alright, you really scared us to death. Your face is as pale as snow, you need to eat some more nourishing food!"

"I'll go back right now and get you a hen!"

As Aunt Xu was about to leave, Aunt Yao stopped her, saying, "Aunt Xu, Aunt Xu, you have a hen that doesn't lay eggs, right? Then you have to give it to me. My hen still lays eggs, and I can't bear to kill it!"

Aunt Xu waved her hand: "What's there to change? I'll just go get it for Yanzi. She's practically my niece, what's wrong with giving her a chicken?"

Aunt Xue chimed in, "After the swallows came to our village, all the children in the village were able to land safely. I even caught my old hen that doesn't lay eggs to give to the swallows some nourishment."

After saying that, the two aunts walked away with an air of indifference, like the wind, and Yao Yanxin couldn't keep up even if she ran behind them, so she could only walk slowly.

She brought money with her, so she was determined to give it to them.

In this day and age, the rear end of an old hen is like a family bank, used to exchange for needles, thread, oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar.

Even if the hen really doesn't lay eggs, it can be given to the educated youth; she can't just take someone else's chicken for free!

Seeing that three people were missing from the room, the village secretary coughed and asked, "Yanzi, are you really alright?"

"I've lost too much blood and I'm still very dizzy. I can't go to the medical room right now. Do you want Tongtong to go there, or should I keep her locked up?"

The village chief took a puff of his pipe: "How much of your skill did your apprentice learn from you?"

This incident made the two village leaders feel a sense of crisis, and they realized they needed to get Xiao Yan to bring out another apprentice as soon as possible.

It would be best if Xiao Yan could take on more local apprentices, so that even if Xiao Yan and the others had to go back in the future, the village wouldn't fall into the embarrassing situation of having no village doctor again.

Xiao Yan understood what the village chief meant: "She can take pulses and prescribe medicine now, but she still needs to practice acupuncture!"

These words relieved the village chief and the village party secretary. Being able to take the pulse and prescribe medicine was enough; they could deal with acupuncture later.

The village secretary put down his pipe: "Then let your apprentice go to work in the clinic first. She's not a village doctor and doesn't get a salary, but we'll give her five work points a day. If she goes to collect herbs, the herbs she collects will also earn her work points."

Xiao Yan looked at the village secretary and the village chief with some surprise. These two sly foxes used to be very stingy. How come they suddenly became so generous?

Xiao Yan's gaze made the village secretary feel embarrassed. He coughed and said, "When you're feeling better, how about finding a few more children in the village to learn from you?"

Xiao Yan immediately understood what was going on; it seemed that her appearance yesterday had frightened them.

They recognized the importance of village doctors and dared not put all their eggs in one basket.

Xiao Yan said, "It's possible, but how many of the children in the village have been to school? I need to be able to read, and it would be best if I had completed junior high school."

This statement excludes the vast majority of children in the village. The land in the village is very barren, and it is good if they can get half full. The parents are farmers who have to support seven or eight children and elderly people. How can they have the spare capacity to support their children to go to junior high school?

Only a few families had some savings and were able to support one child through junior high school.

Almost none of these people have returned; they've all found work elsewhere.

Once they have jobs, who would come back? Is this a sign of unwillingness to teach?

The village chief, a soldier, disliked beating around the bush: "You don't want to teach?"

"It's not that I'm unwilling to teach, nor am I trying to make things difficult for you. Studying medicine is a very demanding task, requiring the acquisition of a great deal of knowledge."

"It's very difficult for people who can't read or who have only graduated from primary school to persist in learning this kind of knowledge. They give up halfway through, and that kind of half-baked knowledge is the most dangerous."

“I wouldn’t dare teach someone like that. If you’re going to learn, learn systematically, or just don’t learn at all.”

The village secretary and the village head were silent for a while. After a long while, the village secretary tucked his pipe behind his back and said, "Bring your apprentice out first. You can rest for the next few days. We have other things to do and are leaving now."

After everyone left, Yao Tongjia came out of the room: "Let me help you back to rest. Do you want some water?"

Xiao Yan put her hand on Yao Tongjia's shoulder: "No need, I'm already very happy to be alive. What does this little bit of weakness matter!"

Xiao Yan hugged Yao Tongjia: "Tongtong, thank you for letting me live. From now on, my heart will be on the other side. Remember that!"

Yao Tongjia helped her master into the room: "Master, aren't you curious?"

"Curiosity killed the cat. I'm not curious, but please don't use it casually in the future!"

"I wouldn't dare use it if it weren't for someone from my family!"

"It's good that you have this awareness, but it would be a waste not to use such a miraculous water. We can think of a way to use it later without anyone noticing."

When Yao Ma came back, well! Her hair was disheveled, and she had a scratch on her face; she looked quite disheveled!

Yao Tongjia touched the scratch with some heartache: "Mom, what happened to you?"

Xiao Yan chuckled: "It must be the chicken's fault!"

Aunt Yao glared at Xiao Yan: "You think you're so smart? You still got taken advantage of by a scumbag!"

Xiao Yan immediately retorted, "If the man you chose wasn't a scumbag, wouldn't you still be stuck here for over ten years?"

In an instant, the two best friends locked eyes, sparks flying. Just as Yao Tongjia was about to step back to avoid being caught in the crossfire, the two best friends looked at each other and laughed.

Hearing the laughter, Yao Tongjia was puzzled: Could this be the world of fame and fortune where love and hate intertwine?
