Chapter 186 Reason

Gu Li glanced at the sky outside the window. It was getting a little dark, but because of the bad weather, there were no stars or moon to be seen.

Gu Li thought maliciously, "You don't want him to feel guilty, but I'll make him feel so guilty that he'll remember you forever." But he smiled and said, "Chen Heng's stuff."

Gu Feng's expression darkened further. "You... you stubborn fool," he said, his expression softening as if he had just thought of something. "Does Jiang Xu know about you and him?"

The wicked black hole in Gu Li's heart grew even larger. He spoke calmly, "He knows," he said, staring at Gu Feng. "What's so shameful about my brother and me?" He emphasized the words "my brother," as if afraid that others wouldn't understand what he was saying.

Gu Feng's expression softened, but then a flicker of emotion returned to his eyes. He spoke slowly and deliberately, "What did you say?"

Gu Li's voice remained calm. "Chen Heng is my brother, of course, a half-brother. What, didn't my mom tell you?" Her voice even tinged with laughter at the end, like a mischievous child.

Gu Feng remained silent, lost in thought, before finally speaking, "Is lying fun, Gu Li?"

“It’s rare for me to tell you the truth, so why would I lie to you?” Gu Li thought back with her eyes closed. “The person came when I was 10 years old on my birthday, when I had an attack. I think you remember that. That was the first time I was so seriously ill, and it was also the time when you couldn’t control my mother’s schedule.”

“She wanted to come see me, and when she ran out she ran into my brother. I guess my brother must have been very pitiful at the time, which is why my mother took her in, hiding her away. I never thought that in the end she would still be killed by you.”

Gu Feng's hand clenched slightly upon hearing the last sentence. "You can't find any monsters?"

Gu Li turned his head and glared at Gu Feng, "You deliberately dragged me out of the art exhibition in Nancheng, delaying me for two whole days. It was just those two days that were missing, you bastard!" His voice couldn't help but grow louder.

Seeing Gu Li's emotions suddenly fluctuating wildly, Gu Feng reassured her, "My problem, calm down and talk about it properly."

Gu Li felt a sharp pain in his eardrums, and even breathing was painful. He paused for a moment before speaking again, "What did my mother do to offend you? Why are you treating her like this, Gu Feng? Tell me why?" The smell of disinfectant in the ward always reminded Gu Li of the image of his mother being swallowed by that white disinfectant.

Gu Feng noticed Gu Li's exhaustion; the conversation was getting increasingly tiring. "I love her very much."

"You're talking nonsense," Gu Li retorted without hesitation. "You're the one who's sick. You think everyone in the world is sick except you, but you're the one who really needs to see a doctor. How do you love her? Do you love her to death?"

Gu Feng said in a deep voice, "I can promise you that I have never loved anyone else but her."

Gu Li scoffed, "You've never loved anyone else? Then why are you looking for those people? Just for chatting? Do you think I'm that easy to fool?"

Gu Feng hadn't expected Gu Li to know about this, but it really was just a casual chat. He could only say, "I just wanted to see her again. They look a little like her, more or less. I just wanted to see her."

Gu Li not only failed to understand these words, but also sneered, "You think this is very affectionate? I can only say," his eyes were extremely cold, "that's disgusting."

“It doesn’t matter,” Gu Feng loosened his clasped hands and leaned further back on the sofa. “I’m lucky if I can even see a shadow.”

Gu Li chuckled, "I'm tired, I want to rest."

Gu Feng clearly hadn't finished talking and knew Gu Li was deliberately trying to get rid of him. "Aren't you going to call Jiang Xu?"

Gu Li said, "What's it to you? Get out of here."

Gu Feng remained seated without moving. "I still have some things to say."

Gu Li looked over impatiently, "You're unusually talkative today."

Gu Feng: "Since we're already here, we should at least finish what we've said."

Gu Li said, "Say it, say it, hurry up and finish so we can leave."

"Your necklace..." Gu Feng hadn't finished speaking when Gu Li started coughing, and the coughing became more and more fake. He waited to see what kind of trouble Gu Li was planning to cause.

Seeing that Gu Feng stopped talking after a moment, Gu Li said, "Don't worry about it anymore. That's how it is. There's no room for discussion."

Gu Feng: "I know."

Gu Li, "You knew that, why did you still bring it up?"

"You're too hasty, Gu Li," Gu Feng's voice deepened, tinged with displeasure. "Since you know what that is, don't you know about tradition?"

Gu Li tilted her head and frowned at him, "Full disclosure? Are you sure you're acting normally today?"

Gu Feng: "I'm just reminding you, don't cause any trouble for me. If you're not sure, don't take this final step."

Gu Li's mind raced. His father had already brought this up, which meant he was very perceptive. He had to think it over carefully. His dejected mood improved a bit, and his tone softened slightly. "I know perfectly well," he said politely, adding, "What else do you want to say?"

Gu Feng said, "You should be discharged from the hospital only after you've fully recovered. Don't wander around with all these injuries; it looks bad."

Gu Li's lips curled down. "You're the ugly one."

Gu Feng said, "I have other things to do, so I should go."

Gu Li waved his hand casually, saying, "So you finally have something to say."

Gu Feng stood up and looked at Gu Li lying down. "She used to be so fierce, but now she looks like a paper tiger." After he finished speaking, he walked towards the door.

As Gu Li was making a face at his back, Gu Feng turned halfway to the side. Gu Li calmly resumed her expression, as if nothing had happened, and instead asked, "You're unusually long-winded today. Is there something you haven't said?"

Gu Feng turned his face to the side, his sharp features softened by the shadows, making him appear more reserved. He gazed at the air for a moment before speaking, "Go home after being discharged from the hospital."

Gu Li frowned, wanting to refuse.

Gu Feng then left with the words, "Take him with you." He strode out of the ward, the door closing softly behind him.

Gu Li stared absently at the ward door, wondering what was going on. Gu Feng seemed to have suddenly become much more agreeable.

Gu Li's thoughts raced, trying to figure out what had caused this change.

He pondered for a moment, and the first step was to take care of the family. Apart from their genders, he and Jiang Xu were absolutely a perfect match, and his father understood the importance of a powerful alliance.

Secondly, other families stepped on the foot of the Gu family, which Gu Feng absolutely could not tolerate.

But these weren't enough to soften Gu Feng's attitude; there was something else, Gu Li pondered.

He realized it—he had thought of it all. Gu Feng had been bringing up the issue of his own death all day.

Gu Feng was afraid he would die.

Gu Li smiled and thought to himself that he was frightened, so he took a step back compared to others, a pretty big step back.

Gu Feng was actually startled.
