Jiang Xu's smile deepened. "It's a secret."
Gu Li nodded. This was a tacit understanding between the two. Once the word "secret" was uttered, some issues should be resolved. "I want to say it again," he gently closed the mahogany box, "I really like it, the kind of liking that has absolutely no element of acting, you know?"
Jiang Xu said, "I think I understand." He looked at Gu Li seriously, "But if you don't like it anymore, then give it back to me."
Gu Li said, "No way. It would be a waste to give it back. It's already mine. Don't covet it, little brother." He will always like it.
Jiang Xu smiled. "That would be perfect." He understood.
Looking at Jiang Xu, who was bathed in sunlight, Gu Li's mind suddenly went blank, and he felt a little unsteady. "After I tell you the secret, I think I have something else to say to you."
Gu Li's mind was blank; his soul seemed to be quietly watching him and speaking, yet he clearly heard what he was saying.
He had a vague feeling, yet a clear impulse that made him speak subconsciously.
Jiang Xu was taken aback. He looked at Gu Li, whose eyes were clear and bright. He couldn't see any complicated emotions in them. They were like a still pond, calm and undisturbed, only allowing people to see their own reflection. "I think I also have something to say to you."
He thought that if possible, there were indeed some things worth discussing.
Gu Li looked down at the closed box. "I can't wear the necklace now," he said with regret. "And Jiang Xu, don't you like wearing necklaces?"
Jiang Xu knew what Gu Li was asking, "I was afraid you'd be envious if I wore it all the time, so I was planning to give it to you first and then we could wear it together."
Gu Li was thinking back to something, "So you already knew what to give me when you were learning how to spin a pen? Learning how to spin a pen was just an excuse?"
Jiang Xu: "Almost, but I really can't spin a pen. And you really did teach me. Are you satisfied with the tuition fee, Teacher Gu?"
Gu Li said, “You’re really something. You call me ‘Teacher Gu’ before the course starts and you call me ‘Teacher Gu’ after the course starts. I’m being a very easygoing teacher.” He joked, “The tuition is on credit. Let me think, even with interest,” he paused, looking at Jiang Xu, a smile playing on his lips, “it’s more than enough.”
Jiang Xu: "That's really great."
Gu Li said, "I think my neck will be better by next week. How about we wear necklaces together then?"
Jiang Xu, "Shall I bring it for you?"
Gu Li curled the corners of his mouth. "Well, I can't see it," he said, explaining his reason for changing the dressing earlier. "More importantly, it's so ceremonial for the person giving the gift to put it on the person receiving it."
Jiang Xu glanced at Gu Li's neck. "Okay, I can't see it either. I think what's more important," his smile was as bright as the sun, "is that the person wearing it is more outstanding."
Gu Li said, "Although you praised me as well, you mainly praised yourself. Am I right?" He then slightly covered his eyes, "You're blinding me."
Jiang Xu, "I learned it from you, but did I not imitate it well?"
Gu Li said, "Well, it doesn't sound like a nice thing to say, so I'm not going to say anything more."
Jiang Xu skipped that part in a good mood, "Then let's start our after-dinner entertainment." He picked up the remote and turned on the TV.
Gu Li responded cooperatively, "Hey, 'The Legend of Zhen Huan' is ready, let's go." He got up to draw some of the curtains.
The time after dinner was leisurely, and the two of them snuggled on the sofa. After watching for a while, Jiang Xu got up and said, "I'll get some things. What would you like to drink?"
Gu Li hugged the cushion, watching intently, "I'll drink whatever you drink."
Jiang Xu left after hearing this. He really didn't know if Gu Li was truly not picky or if she was only picky sometimes. However, judging from Lü Chao and the others' reactions, Gu Li was probably indeed a bit picky.
Jiang Xu thought for a moment, grabbed two cans of cola and some snacks, and went back to sit down on the sofa.
Gu Li took the cola Jiang Xu handed her, "I was just thinking of drinking this."
Jiang Xu said, "I heard what you were thinking, so I brought this especially for you."
Gu Li said, "Don't worry, I'll listen to your thoughts before I get you anything in the future."
Jiang Xu: "Then don't worry, I'll cooperate and tell you."
Gu Li gave Jiang Xu a thumbs up, then his gaze fell on the snacks Jiang Xu had brought. "These potato chips are all tomato flavored, so you don't have to listen to my wishes completely. Where are your snacks? I just heard what you wanted, so I'll get you some flavors that suit you."
Jiang Xu: "Then I might have misunderstood and caused you to mishear. This tastes pretty good."
Gu Li didn't say anything more. He tore open a package, took out the first piece, and handed it to Jiang Xu's mouth. "Come on, let your brother give you the best piece."
Jiang Xu opened his mouth and ate it. After chewing, he said, "Little brother, you're so good to your older brother."
Gu Li turned her gaze back to the television. "No problem, no problem."
They said they were watching "Empresses in the Palace," and the two of them really did watch it seriously for an entire afternoon. Gu Liche was completely captivated, and he occasionally discussed the plot with Jiang Xu, saying, "Don't give me any spoilers, not even a little bit."
Jiang Xu: "No spoilers, but if I see through you, you'll have to kill me."
Gu Li: "That's not the case. I'd kill myself."
Jiang Xu turned to look at Gu Li, "Well, you're pretty ruthless."
Gu Li: "Ruthless, isn't it? You traded your life for it."
Jiang Xu noticed that Gu Li was watching TV and talking more ramblingly than usual, saying, "This episode is over."
Gu Li said, "Oh, okay," and then continued looking at it before finally turning to Jiang Xu and asking, "Why?"
Jiang Xu pointed to the clock, "It's getting late. Eating on time will help you recover faster, you know?"
Gu Li: "I recovered pretty quickly, I'm in great shape."
Jiang Xu, "Not fast enough? Don't you want to wear the necklace sooner?"
Gu Li began to think. First, he knew that eating later wouldn't make him recover any faster. Second, he felt uncomfortable seeing the story end here. Finally, he felt that Jiang Xu was probably, definitely, trying to fool him.
After thinking it over, Gu Li said, "Okay, let's go eat." What if it's true?
Jiang Xu got up to draw the curtains. "Go downstairs to buy groceries and cook, or..." As soon as the curtains were drawn, water droplets fell onto the glass and then slowly slid down. "It's raining."
Gu Li also walked over, "I really didn't expect this, the weather was so nice at noon."
Jiang Xu: "Yeah, ordering takeout?"
Gu Li: "That's too much trouble. Do you know what goes best with rainy days?"
Jiang Xu, "Stop having those unhealthy thoughts."
Gu Li said, “How could that be? If you think that way, we can add some things and make it healthier.” He held up his hand and started counting, “For example, a perfectly fried egg, some properly cooked vegetables, a sausage of the highest quality, and some meat with excellent flavor.” He counted them off one by one on his fingers.
Then, looking at Jiang Xu with a serious expression, she said, "You can't discriminate against instant noodles just because they're simple and convenient. I really feel sorry for them."
Jiang Xu spoke calmly, "I'm already starting to feel heartbroken."
Gu Li: "Hmm? You've already empathized so quickly?"
