Lou Xinyue (2)
The ice in the stream turned into water. It was freezing cold when I washed clothes. My hands were frozen like radishes and cracked. But when summer came, the ice magically disappeared.
But it will grow again in winter.
The summer in Liuhe Village is not hot. I occasionally hide in the shaded hillside to take a break, but the sound of cicadas is very annoying and makes people feel upset.
I went to cut grass for the pigs with a backpack on my back as usual. The basket was full and I heard a lot of noisy noises.
Many people were running to one place. I heard them say they were from big cities looking for funding.
What funding?
More and more people were running towards the village committee. She was a little curious, so she put on a backpack and took a sickle in her hand and went with them.
There are a lot of people in the dam, and I feel like everyone in the village is here.
Suddenly, my ear was twisted, and then I heard my mother's scolding voice, "Where have you been, you little bitch? You can't even catch up with the free stuff. If you can't get it, I'll punish you."
I saw a very beautiful car driving into the dam, and also another very large car.
Everyone made way for the car, and after the door opened, a man in a suit who looked like someone on TV got out and shook hands with the village chief and the others.
Then he opened the back seat of the car and carried out a girl. I had never seen a girl so beautiful. She was wearing a princess dress and was as delicate as a doll on TV.
She was held in the man's arms. She seemed to be still sleepy. She rubbed her eyes and the man helped her block the sun.
That was the man who came to donate to Liuhe Village. Everyone was lining up to receive supplies, and then it was my turn.
The village chief said, "The little girl from the Zhang family, take out the grass from the basket. This won't fit in."
I shook my head. “I can take it back.”
My mother poked my head in frustration and said, "You silly girl, take your things back first and don't keep Mr. Xu waiting for too long."
I was stunned, looking at the girl standing next to Mr. Xu. She was wearing a beautiful dress, had deer-like eyes, and looked like a small cake. She blinked at me and smiled at me.
What about me? He was wearing broken slippers, his clothes were so dirty that the color couldn't be seen, and even his hair was dry and yellow.
Mr. Xu smiled at me kindly and said, "It's okay. You can carry it back and come back later. We will wait for you here."
My mother glared at me with disgust and said, "It's okay. She is stubborn. Don't keep you waiting. Take it back right away."
As she said this, she forcefully pulled the backpack off my shoulders and emptied out all the grass in the basket.
The little girl hid behind the man in fear.
I looked at the grass on the ground and I knew that I was going to be beaten again today.
In the evening, the village chief came to my house and persuaded my mother to let me continue my studies. He said that Mr. Xu had agreed to sponsor the children of Liuhe Village to finish college.
My mother didn't agree. She let my younger brother go. If I left, there would be no one to do the housework. She said that she would find someone to marry me when I was 15.
After persuasion failed, the village chief left.
I was too young at the time, and all I worried about was being kicked out.
Most of the children in Liuhe Village have gone to school, but I still repeat my previous life, cooking, mowing grass, hoeing the fields, and feeding pigs.
"Uncle Zhu, I want that one, the biggest one."
I heard a voice not far away, and I looked back. It was the little girl from that day. She was wearing a pretty little skirt and standing under the tree. Her two pigtails were bouncing when she was happy.
The man was picking plums from the tree.
I saw him take it off, wash it with water and then hand it to the little girl.
"Thank you, Uncle Zhu."
Even when she spoke, she was sweet.
Suddenly, she looked towards me. There were crops in front of her. She walked forward a few steps and raised the purple plums in her hand. "Do you want to eat them?"
I shook my head and continued to busy myself with mowing the grass. If I was any later I would be beaten again.
"My name is Xu Chunian. What's your name? Why are you here? Don't you go to school?"
"My name is Yueyue."
"Okay, Yueyue."
She was not as scared as she was that day, squatting on the ridge of the field, "Aren't you going to school?"
I shook my head.
"Why?"
I stopped answering.
Xu Chunian turned around and said something to the man, and the man handed her a small bag.
She put the food on the ridge of the field and said, "This is for you to eat."
I still didn't respond to her until there was no sound. Then I looked at her and saw that she had been carried away by the man.
The slope here is quite steep, and I always fall when it rains.
I walked to the edge of the field and opened the bag. There were candies and some snacks I couldn’t name inside. I peeled off the candy wrapper and ate one. It was so sweet.
I put a few candies in my pocket to give to my grandma, and then hid the bag in the grass.
