Chapter 98 Wen Jiaojiao steals the rice bucket from the shop

Seeing Li Cuihua arrogantly leave after speaking, Wu Hehua felt a tightness in her chest, unable to breathe. She sat in the main room for a long time before Li Cuihua returned, and said irritably:

"From now on, mind your own business. That woman has already told us that if anyone tries to find out about her, you must say you don't know them, or they'll cause trouble for us."

"You're always so idle, just causing me trouble. If I ever see you going to that couple's house again, pack your bags and go back to your hometown. Don't bother me anymore."

Li Cuihua's face flushed red and then turned pale. She was, after all, an elder, helping to take care of her grandchildren and do housework, yet she ended up being disliked by everyone because of this.

Despite her dissatisfaction, she could only nod and shrink back, saying, "Well, if there's nothing else, I'll go wash the clothes first."

Wu Hehua gave her a disapproving look:

"I think you're just too full to care about other people's business. If you go hungry for a couple of meals, you'll probably behave."

Li Cuihua knew her family was powerful, so she kept washing the clothes without daring to make a sound.

Deep down, she still thought Yuan Wenjiao was quite nice; after all, she rarely talked back to her no matter what she said.

Sometimes, when she spoke harshly, Yuan Wenjiao would just have a gloomy, long face, which perfectly satisfied her desire to discipline her daughter-in-law as a mother-in-law.

Therefore, she was still very willing to interact with her and did not take Wu Hehua's words to heart.

She mainly knew that Wu Hehua's baby was about to be born, and the family couldn't do without her.

The reason she didn't want to go back to her hometown was because her son was here.

He lost everything in his hometown and went back all alone. He was afraid that no one would know if he died, so he had no choice but to compromise.

The street was bustling with people, all turning to look at the girl who was carrying a suitcase in one hand and holding half a wooden bucket of rice in the other.

Wearing a mask to cover her face, Wen Jiaojiao seemed completely unconcerned about the stares of those around her and continued walking towards the hotel.

I was promised food and lodging, so I only brought half a bucket of rice. There's nothing wrong with that, so just assume I can eat a little.

She looked around and realized that only this bucket of rice was worth two yuan, so with the mindset of "you can't lose out by eating anything," she carried it and ran.

Not far away, Wen Zhaoye's eyes were moist and red, his dark, tousled hair clung to his forehead, and he was drenched in sweat. A panic he had never felt before filled his heart.

Under the scorching sun, he anxiously asked around the area, but still couldn't find Wen Jiaojiao's whereabouts.

Despite his exhaustion, he ran through the crowd again, when suddenly, a voice came from around the corner:

"Brother, where are you going?"

Wen Zhaoye paused, his pupils dilated involuntarily, and the figures around him seemed to move in slow motion.

His heart skipped a beat, and he slowly turned his head in disbelief, looking at the girl hugging the large rice bucket and saying:

"Where have you been? Why are you running around like this again?"

His voice carried a barely perceptible tremor, which Wen Jiaojiao didn't notice. She looked at the man who had walked up to her and chuckled softly.

"I was thinking it was almost noon, so I went out to buy you lunch."

Wen Zhaoye's heart finally settled down. He looked at the half-full bucket of rice in her arms and said uncertainly:

"Did you buy this for me?"

Wen Jiaojiao shoved the half-meter-wide wooden rice bucket she was holding into his arms and said:

"Yes, I had already eaten. I thought you had a big appetite, so I bought all the leftovers. The kind owner even gave me the bucket as a gift."

Wen Zhaoye held the wooden tub with one arm, feeling that she was considerate. He glanced at her suitcase with a slight smile.

"Then why do you bring a suitcase when you go out?"

Wen Jiaojiao remained completely calm, blatantly lying as she said:

"I have a lot of money on me, so I thought it wouldn't be safe to put it in my pocket. I didn't bring a bag with me when I went out, so I just used a suitcase to put it in."

Wen Zhaoye's smile froze, his brow furrowing slightly. He was utterly bewildered now; after all, it was only a few hundred yuan, not millions.

No normal person would carry such a large suitcase around with their money when going out, and if he was running, there's even less reason to stop him.

He thought about it for a moment, but couldn't figure it out, so he simply put his mind to it and took the suitcase, saying:

"As long as no one is missing, let's go back."

"I'm not missing, but I lost ten yuan." Wen Jiaojiao gave a reasonable explanation for the money she had given to Yuan Wen Jiaojiao.

Wen Zhaoye was stunned for a moment, then chuckled and said:

"Oh well, if it's lost, it's lost. Anyway, Song Qi brought the passbook over, so we can withdraw more if needed."

With her physical and mental burdens lifted, Wen Jiaojiao felt much more relaxed. She stretched her aching back.

"Brother, let's go home. I want to go home. When we get home, you should hurry up and make the leggings and sell them."

Wen Zhaoye thought about what he had considered earlier, his ears turning slightly red, and said, "Let's go back to the hotel first. I have something important to tell you."

Wen Jiaojiao had a bad feeling and was afraid that he knew her identity. She walked towards the hotel with a nervous heart.

The receptionist watched the two return, deliberately ignoring the large bucket of rice Wen Zhaoye was carrying, and chuckled:

"You found your sister? Be more careful next time. If she runs off again, you won't be so lucky. Quite a few girls go missing in Yuncheng every year, especially one as pretty as her who doesn't know any better."
