Chun Tao walked on the deserted street, her eyes misty.
She both hoped that Han Tao would come after her and explain everything, and was also afraid of hearing things she didn't want to hear, her mind racing with all sorts of thoughts.
After dropping off a client, Huo Xiao returned to the hotel and saw her looking so dejected.
"Chuntao, what's wrong?"
At times like these, people are most vulnerable to sudden acts of concern, and instantly, tears streamed down her face.
This was the first time Huo Xiao had seen a girl cry in front of him, so he quickly stepped forward to comfort her:
"Don't cry, if others see this, they'll think I did something to you!"
At this moment, in the reception hall, Han Tao directly stopped the music and reprimanded Su Fei:
"Who do you think you are? You're so old, yet you try to play mind games with me. Let me tell you, what happened back then was because I was young and naive. We had no connection before, and don't try to get my attention in the future."
After saying that, he glared at Sophie and chased after her.
As luck would have it, just as he was about to catch up with Chun Tao, he saw her standing with Huo Xiao, looking very intimate, and Huo Xiao even seemed to be wiping away her tears.
His steps faltered, a surge of jealousy welling up inside him. The next second, emboldened by the alcohol, he stepped in front of the two men, shoved Huo Xiao aside, and muttered:
"Chuntao is my woman, get out of my way."
Huo Xiao staggered, almost falling, and his temper flared.
"When did Chun Tao become your woman? If you really love her, why would you make her cry?"
The tense atmosphere between the two men immediately sobered Chun Tao up, and she quickly stopped Han Tao, saying:
"Brother Han, please don't do this."
Han Tao's anger flared even more when he saw Chun Tao protecting Huo Xiao. He pushed her away and was about to fight Huo Xiao.
Chun Tao was already upset, and seeing his state, she directly uttered some harsh words.
"Han Tao, stop making trouble. Since that's the case, let's not contact each other anymore."
With that, she mustered her courage and ran home without looking back.
Han Tao was then awakened by the night wind. He punched a tree trunk next to him, and blood immediately streamed down his hand.
Huo Xiao was stunned when he saw him like this, and quickly took him to the hotel to have his wounds bandaged.
In the days that followed, Chuntao truly stopped answering Han Tao's calls.
If he came to the hotel to look for her, she would avoid him.
Just then, he had a project that required him to travel for a month. He left a message for the hotel and then flew to another city.
Chun Tao knew she wouldn't see Han Tao for the next month, and that didn't make her feel any better.
She never gave Han Tao a chance to explain, and when no one was around, she hated herself for being so heartless.
She desperately wished that nothing had ever happened between Han Tao and that girl named Sophie.
But then, one afternoon, Sophie appeared before her, wearing five-centimeter high heels and looking arrogant.
"You must be Chun Tao, let's talk." Sophie's tone was a bit aggressive.
Chun Tao, mindful of her work uniform and her duty, smiled and said:
"Hello, is there anything I can help you with?"
Sophie curled her lips and said, "Stop pretending in front of me. You just want to climb the social ladder, don't you? I'm here today to show you the right path."
As she spoke, she took out a business card from her crocodile-patterned handbag and waved it.
“This is a foreign friend of mine who is very interested in Chinese culture and wants to find a Chinese wife. If you can win him over, you can live a life of comfort and ease, and he can even take you abroad and make you a citizen of the United States in the future.”
In Sophie's view, this was a great temptation.
In an era of surging emigration, countless young women dream of finding a foreigner so they can go abroad, get a green card, and eventually bring their whole family with them.
In their eyes, there is gold everywhere abroad, and the moon is rounder than the one in China.
Seeing her undisguised sense of superiority, Chun Tao couldn't help but chuckle.
"Madam, you're dressed very fashionably; you're probably the type foreigners like. You should keep this opportunity for yourself!"
As she spoke, she tried to push her aside and leave.
It's really funny. She sees poop as smelling good and assumes everyone else does too!
What a foreign-worshipping scumbag!
Han Tao has always been dedicated to scientific research and contributing to the construction of the motherland. How could he possibly like someone like that!
Unexpectedly, Sophie persisted, grabbing her arm and continuing:
"Don't be ungrateful. I'm doing this only to make you leave Han Tao willingly. He and I were childhood sweethearts in college. Even if he's pursuing you now, it's only because I haven't returned to China, and he can't stand being alone."
Now that I'm back in China, you shouldn't bother him anymore.
To make her words more convincing, she even pulled out a graduation photo, which indeed included Han Tao and her, with Han Tao standing behind her, his gaze seemingly fixed on her.
Chun Tao's chest heaved, her face showing a dark and unreadable expression. It took her a while to regain her composure.
"Madam, this photo is yellowed and from a long time ago! But why are you saying these things to me? It was Han Tao who pursued me; you should be telling her!"
Oh, he's away on a business trip. You probably didn't know? Why don't you leave your phone number, and I'll have him call you back when he gets back?
A single, casual remark caused Sophie's face to drain of color instantly.
She came to find Chuntao because she couldn't find Hantao.
He thought that coercion and bribery would make Chun Tao back down, but who knew that he would be the one to lose face.
Now that things had come to this point, she didn't care about saving face anymore and gritted her teeth, saying:
"Chuntao, what are you after? Han Tao is not young anymore. He could be your father if he were a few years older. Are you really willing to stay with him?"
If you're just after the money, I can give it to you. Here's a check for five thousand dollars, enough for you to live on for the rest of your life.
As she spoke, she took another check out of her bag.
Chun Tao sneered; she was really well prepared!
Unfortunately, she really didn't care about five thousand yuan.
Just then, Huo Xiao walked by with a notebook in his hand, and she waved him over.
"Mr. Huo, we've obtained the hotel's information. Are you going to report to Mr. Lu?" Chun Tao asked.
Huo Xiao nodded, his gaze sweeping across Sophie's face before landing on the check in her hand, as if he understood something.
He said casually:
"The hotel has done well this year, and General Manager Lu will definitely reward you. If the bonus is calculated at one percent of the profit, you will have 20,000 yuan."
Chun Tao chuckled: "Then I'll have to trouble you to put in a good word for me with President Lu."
"Don't worry, you deserve it," Huo Xiao said, snapping his fingers at her before leaving.
When she looked at Sophie again, she found that her face had turned green...
