Chapter 134: Something's happened
Chapter 134: Something's happened
Teacher Fang was angry and ashamed, her face flushed. She said, "Jingjing, what you said is right. My son is a good-for-nothing. Today, I'm going to make the decision for him. You can take all the savings in the house. Anyway, he didn't earn a single penny. From now on, Xiaonian will stay at home. You can rest assured. I can collect my pension while he studies."
Grandma Fang was taken aback for a moment, then quickly said, "You old man, your mind is so muddled..."
“Niannian is my son,” Wang Jing said calmly. “I will pay for his schooling. You two can keep the little money you have for your retirement. Niannian is already 21 years old (by Chinese reckoning), so there’s no question of him living with his father or mother. My mother has a room for him, and he can live wherever he wants in the future. He’s not an unreasonable child. He will definitely take care of his grandparents, so you can rest assured.”
Fang Wu finally stood up.
He didn't address Wang Jing, but only Fang Yuenian, pointing at him and saying, "Your surname is Fang, do you even know that?!"
Before Fang Yuenian could speak, Wang Jing suddenly stood up and started cursing: "What are you pointing at? How dare you point in front of your son? I only sat down to talk to your parents properly because I'm giving you face, and you're still yelling at me. If you make me angry, do you believe I'll burn all three of your houses down?"
Fang Yuenian stood up as well. Seeing the fire in Fang Wu's eyes, she suppressed her anger and pulled Wang Jing, "Mom, let's not talk about it anymore. Let's pack our things today."
“Okay,” Wang Jing agreed, then turned and glared at Fang Wu. “I don’t have time to argue with you. We’ll get the divorce certificate at the Civil Affairs Bureau on the eighth day of the month. Stop your damn nagging. You should get back to the street and continue working as a helper for that boss’s wife. She has a son too, and you’ll have a son in the future. Whatever Fang Yuenian’s surname is, that’s his own. What does it have to do with you?”
Just as Fang Wu was about to fly into a rage, Teacher Fang roared, "Go, go, go! Get out of here! I hate seeing you! Get out!"
"Fine, fine," Fang Wu said, twisting his face. "Old man, you're really open-minded and amazing. Fine, I'll leave. Do you think I'm not annoyed?"
As he spoke, he actually walked into the courtyard.
A moment later, the sound of a motorcycle starting came from outside. Wang Jing ignored it, left her parents-in-law behind, and took Fang Yuenian back to the room to start packing.
As Fang Wu rode his motorcycle, the winter wind whipped against his face, and his anger grew stronger and stronger.
Wang Jing has always been this formidable and intolerant! He thought.
All they know is cursing, arguing, and making veiled accusations; they can never have a moment's peace!
How can they compare to Cheng Qiuyan? How can they compare to Wang Yingxia?
A woman who behaves like this deserves to be severely punished!
The more he thought about it, the more he felt that his dignity as a man had never been valued in the past twenty years, his status as the head of the family had never been acknowledged, and the disdain he had suffered, the embarrassing situation where no one in the village would offer him a cigarette or play cards with him, had never been cared about.
Only when he got to town and was in front of Wang Yingxia could he see a kind expression on his face.
Wang Yingxia was willing to talk to him with a smile, which gave him endless energy to move things in the shop, wash dishes, and be happy—isn't this what a harmonious couple looks like? It's clear that he's not incapable of being a hardworking and good man; the reason he hadn't been before was all Cheng Qiuyan's fault, all Wang Jing's fault, all those heartless little devils' fault!
The roar of the motorcycle exhaust pipe continued, and Wang Jing opened the wardrobe in the room.
There wasn't much to pack, just some old clothes in poor condition; he could just wrap them up. Fang Yuenian wasn't in a hurry. He only packed a few clothes and a few precious boxes from the bookshelf into his suitcase, then came out and locked his bedroom door.
Grandma Fang cried and pulled him, "Niannian, you can't leave!"
Fang Yuenian said, "I'm not leaving. I'll just take my mom home and stay at my mother-in-law's house for a few days before coming back. I've locked the door. If anyone's son comes over in the next few days, Grandpa and Grandma, you'd better keep a close eye on him."
Grandma Fang was so embarrassed she had nowhere to hide, and she cried as she let go.
While Wang Jing was packing the bundle, Fang Yuenian made a phone call to his uncle.
Without hesitation, the uncle and aunt immediately agreed to come and pick them up.
Only about ten minutes later, hearing the sound of a car, Fang Yuenian came out to see what was happening. She found Fang Wu still straddling the motorcycle, deep in thought with a livid face. Uncle Wang and Aunt Wang got off the car. Fang Yuenian called out, but before she could react, her uncle rushed straight at Fang Wu's face and punched him a few times.
"Wang Lin!" Auntie screamed, pulling him away while trying to persuade him, "Alright, alright! What's the point of hitting him?"
Fang Wu fell off the motorcycle, and became even angrier. He jumped up and cursed, "Fuck you! Take your sister and get out of here!"
The two women started fighting, with Fang Yuenian and his aunt trying to break them up. Wang Jing and the Fang family elders rushed out of the house and started fighting in a chaotic manner, crying and shouting.
—During the Lunar New Year, the village was bustling with activity and noise. The farce in the Fang family's backyard attracted a lot of people.
The Cheng family was the only ones unaware. The neighbor's son had just gotten married, and the new in-laws were moving in for the first time. They were setting off fireworks and firecrackers throughout lunchtime, making so much noise that it drowned out the sounds from the other side of the river.
Cheng Qiuyan made honey cakes, which were fragrant and soft. She pulled her three children over to help cut them, and they ate half of each half. The three of them praised their mother so much that she blushed. Cheng Bing thought that Fang Yuenian loved to eat them, so she helped very diligently. She took two pictures of the honey cakes and sent them to Fang Yuenian. She did not receive a reply, but assumed that he was busy at home, so she did not think much of it and planned to invite him out to eat in the evening.
Cheng Qiuyan also remembered that Fang Yuenian loved to eat this, and instructed, "I made a lot this time, Bingbing, remember to give some to little Yuenian."
As Cheng Junjun chewed on a honey cake, she casually said, "Mom, he knew he would give it to me even if you didn't tell him."
Cheng Qiuyan smiled and said, "Isn't that great? You don't know, in the summer, Xiaoyuen sent him cantaloupes, and she even cut them up and scraped off the seeds before sending them over."
The speaker meant no harm, but the three younger children felt inexplicably guilty upon hearing it.
After a long pause, Cheng Bing finally said, "Well... that's just how he is."
Cheng Xiaoxiao silently slapped him from behind.
When the honey cake was cut in half, all three of them were full. Cheng Qiuyan told these greedy people to stop eating or they would get too full.
Just as things were getting warm and cozy, Lin Guohui suddenly pushed open the door and rushed into the house. He hadn't even changed his shoes and waded through the mud into the kitchen. He saw Cheng Bing first, steadied himself, patted him on the shoulder and said, "Go put on a coat and change your shoes. Hurry up."
Cheng Qiuyan was puzzled, but seeing her husband's terrible complexion, she quickly put down the knife and stepped forward to ask, "What happened?"
Lin Guohui swallowed hard; he had returned from the freezing cold, but his throat was burning.
"Qiuyan," he gasped, "Wang Jing had an accident. I'm taking Bingbing to the hospital."
The whole family was taken aback. Cheng Qiuyan was the first to react and quickly pushed her son, "Hurry up, go get dressed—what's wrong?"
“I don’t know what happened, but her brother from her mother’s side came over and got into a fight with Fang Wu. Fang Wu was riding his motorcycle and knocked Wang Jing into the pond next to their house. Her vest hit a rock right in the middle,” Lin Guohui said in a few words, then calmed everyone down. “Don’t panic. She was taken to the hospital very quickly. Hongmei told me that Wang Jing was awake at the time, but she couldn’t move. I guess she hit her vest.”
Cheng Bing felt a chill run down her spine and dared not imagine anything. She quickly put on her down jacket and returned, barely managing to remain calm, to ask Lin Guohui, "How is Fang Yuenian...?"
“He should be fine,” Lin Guohui looked back and saw that Cheng Qiuyan and her daughters had also come up. “You all stay at home and call if anything happens.”
Without further delay, he took Cheng Bing out.
The van drove out of the village road in Shuibiwan. The road was slippery and difficult to travel. When it reached the village brigade, it encountered Fang Yuenian's mother-in-law and cousin. The mother-in-law was lying on the ground crying, and was being barely supported by her grandson.
The car stopped, and Lin Guohui stuck his head out of the window and shouted, "What happened?"
Grandma Wang stumbled over, tears streaming down her face, and said, "Master Lin! Could you please take us to the town hospital? Jingjing was hit by Fang Wu's motorcycle..."
“I know,” Lin Guohui said immediately. “We’re going to the hospital. There are two more people in the car. Hurry up!”
Cheng Bing pushed open the car door from the inside with a "whoosh" and quickly pulled the grandfather and grandson into the car.
The atmosphere inside the car was incredibly oppressive.
If it weren't for today's situation, these two families would never have been able to get together. Grandma Wang covered her face and kept crying in the back seat, while Cheng Bing sat in the passenger seat with a tense expression, clutching his phone tightly in his hand. On the screen was his chat history with Fang Yuenian, who had not replied.
"Wang Jing's mother," Lin Guohui said, distracted by the car, trying to comfort her, "Don't worry, did you get through on the phone?"
“Just now, Niannian called back and said that Jingjing was hit by that bastard, and they’re going to drive her to the hospital,” Grandma Wang said, her voice trembling with suppressed sobs. “Master Lin, how did you find out?”
Lin Guohui replied, "I just came back from outside to listen to the lecture."
With red eyes, Grandma Wang looked at Cheng Bing, and then, as if lost in thought, tears streamed down her face.
Lin Guohui said, "Don't panic. The hospital in town is much better now. Everything will be fine. We'll be there soon."
Fang Yuenian's cousin helped his grandmother up and quickly comforted her, saying, "Grandma, don't cry yet. We don't know what's going on yet. My parents and Niannian are with my aunt right now, so don't worry, they'll take good care of her."
It would have been better if she hadn't tried to comfort her; the more she tried, the more her mother-in-law couldn't hold back anymore, letting out a heart-wrenching wail, "Jingjing... my Jingjing..."
Cheng Bing was in a state of confusion and wanted to make a call, but Lin Guohui stopped her: "Don't rush to make a call. They are very busy at the hospital. If they have time, they will definitely call to let us know they are safe."
Then he asked, "Where's his father?"
"Who cares where he's dead?" Granny Wang cursed. She was actually a kind old woman and had never cursed Fang Wu like that before. "That good-for-nothing bastard! He doesn't care about his wife and son, but runs off to seduce other women, and he still has the nerve to get angry and fight. I told Jingjing last night not to go back, not to go back... Waaah... Jingjing is so young, she's just starting university. How can the world be so heartless..."
Lin Guohui didn't dare to ask any more questions. He glanced at his son, but Cheng Bing didn't seem surprised at all.
“Master Lin,” Mrs. Wang said, tears welling up in her eyes again, “you, you have a kind heart, and Xiaoxiao’s mother has a kind heart too. Your son’s name is Bingbing, right? He’s been good friends with my Niannian since he was little. Your family are all kind people. For so many years, Jingjing has been grateful to you two…”
With her child present, she had a thousand thoughts swirling in her mind, but couldn't say too much. Worried about her daughter, she was restless and uneasy until the car finally stopped in front of the town hospital. Author's Note: Thank you to my mentor 9492239 (9492239) for your support!
