Chapter 135: Acceptance
Chapter 135: Acceptance
Cheng Bing unbuckled her seatbelt and jumped out of the car before it had even come to a complete stop.
At the same time, a WeChat message finally arrived on my phone: "Under surgery, no danger to life."
He immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
Several nurses were gathered at the duty station. A few of them rushed over to ask where the car accident victim who had just been brought in was. One of the nurses pointed the way and said, "He's on the left after you go down the corridor."
When they arrived at the operating room, the adults were all standing, sitting, or squatting, crowding around. As soon as Wang's mother-in-law saw her son and daughter-in-law, she collapsed to the ground, unable to get up. Cheng Bing ignored everyone else and went straight through to find Fang Yuenian—he was huddled on the floor next to the chair, his sweater stained with blood and mud.
Cheng Bing immediately squatted down, took off her down jacket, and draped it over Fang Yuenian's sweater.
Fang Yuenian only noticed him then. A hint of surprise flashed in her bloodshot eyes, and her throat constricted. She managed to utter with great difficulty, "Why are you here?"
“My dad brought me here. We ran into your mother-in-law and cousin on the way,” Cheng Bing said. The sound of Wang’s mother-in-law crying could be heard from her earlier, but thankfully, her aunt Fang Yuenian was taking care of her. “How is your mother?”
Fang Yuenian wiped his face hard. "His ribs and collarbone are broken, and he has a deep scratch on his shoulder." He raised his blood-stained hands, trembling. "The most serious injury is the lumbar vertebral fracture. The doctor just spent a long time testing whether my mother could lift her hands and feet on her own. Fortunately, fortunately, no nerves were damaged. She is currently undergoing surgery and needs a blood transfusion and a metal plate."
Cheng Bing grasped his hands in both of hers. "Thank goodness you're alright. Your bones will heal. How are you? Are you injured?"
Fang Yuenian shook her head, "I'm fine."
He has been in a daze ever since the incident occurred.
In the courtyard, the adults were wrestling and fighting. They had already been separated when Fang Wu started his motorcycle again to leave. No one expected that his motorcycle would suddenly go out of control and rush towards Fang Yuenian and Teacher Fang. They were too close, and in a flash, the two were pushed apart. The next second, Wang Jing was directly knocked away.
It plunged into the ditch between the road and the field, crashing hard onto a piece of junk in the middle.
His uncle drove like a maniac. The whole way, Fang Yuenian huddled in the back seat, supporting Wang Jing. For the first time in her life, she realized how fragile her mother truly was. Her pale face was smeared with mud, her hair was disheveled, her hands and eyelids trembled uncontrollably, and large patches of blood flowed from her shoulders. Fang Yuenian struggled to breathe, and as she shakily dialed her mother-in-law's number, the blood on her hands momentarily made the screen unresponsive.
When Lin Guohui stepped forward, he first saw Fang Wu and the Fang family elders, who looked dejected on the outermost edge. They had been brought there by their neighbor Hongmei's husband.
"Master Lin," Hongmei's husband greeted him, reaching into his pocket to offer him a cigarette, then realizing something was amiss, he put it back. "Why are you here too?"
"Oh, I heard about it. I happened to run into Wang Jing's mother on the road, so I gave her a ride," Lin Guohui said.
“Sigh.” Hongmei’s husband shook his head and turned to Teacher Fang, saying, “Teacher Fang, I have a lot of things to do at home, so I’ll go home first. Hongmei will come over after I rest for a while.”
Teacher Fang hurriedly stepped forward and said, "Oh, oh, oh, thank you for your trouble, it must have been hard for you to make this trip."
Hongmei's husband waved his hand, "Hey, we're just strangers here. Let's not talk about that. See you in the village, Master Lin. Happy New Year!"
Lin Guohui chatted with him for a few minutes, and after the man left, he turned back and saw Fang Yuenian's uncle, Wang Lin, come up to him, take his hand and say, "Master Lin, it must have been hard for you to bring my mother here. You've worked so hard."
The two walked a few steps outside, and Lin Guohui said, "You're too kind. How is Wang Jing?"
Wang Lin was deeply moved and said, "Thank goodness, she didn't hit her head. The doctor pointed out her bones to us, the ones under her ribs and the ones on her shoulders. Luckily, none of them hit any organs. It's just that a section of the bone in her vest was compressed. She probably won't be able to move for two days, and she's lost a lot of blood."
Lin Guohui nodded. "That's settled then. I'll talk to Qiuyan. Why is your eye so swollen? You're in the hospital, so hurry up and get them to put some medicine on it."
Wang Lin said with embarrassment, "I won't apply it. Sigh, it's all my fault. Why didn't I just bring Jingjing and Niannian home? It's the New Year, and I had to do it. Sigh!"
“I’m not going to talk about it anymore,” Lin Guohui patted his shoulder. “Xiao Yuenian must have been frightened on this trip too.”
The two looked in that direction at the same time and happened to see Cheng Bing and Fang Yuenian, one squatting and the other sitting. Cheng Bing was holding Fang Yuenian's hand and looking up at him as he spoke.
Lin Guohui was momentarily stunned.
Wang Lin said, "Sigh, it's all thanks to your son. He has a good relationship with Niannian, so I can talk to him a few times. He didn't say a word the whole way in the car; he must have been really frightened."
Lin Guohui remained silent for a long time until Cheng Bing stood up and pulled Fang Yuenian to sit on the bench outside the operating room. Only then did he come to his senses and say, "Oh, it's nothing, it's nothing."
Fang Yuenian's aunt then called to her husband, "Wang Lin, go buy some food. Mom hasn't eaten either... Happy New Year, Mr. Lin. Thank you. Come to our house for dinner sometime."
Wang Lin was about to go out to buy food when Lin Guohui glanced at his son and gritted his teeth, saying, "Let's go together. There probably aren't many shops open on the street during the Lunar New Year. I'll split up with you to look for food."
The surgery lasted for more than three hours, and Wang Jing was finally wheeled out in the evening.
Fang Yuenian was at the front, and she went up to look with a heart full of fear. She saw that Wang Jing had her eyes closed and her face was pale.
The nurse said, "The surgery went smoothly. The anesthesia has worn off. Call her and wake her up. She'll need an IV drip later."
Fang Yuenian hurriedly called out "Mom," and his aunt and mother-in-law followed suit, calling out "Jingjing." Wang Jing opened her eyes groggily. On the way to the ward, she looked at the group of people around her and realized that she was still alive, which made her feel truly relieved.
Although I've lived half my life and am almost fifty, my children are still young. Being alive is the best thing.
Teacher Fang and Grandma Fang also wanted to join in, and the two families crowded together, creating a tense atmosphere. Finally, Aunt Fang Yue Nian stepped forward to calm things down: "Uncle, Aunt, you should go home. We, the family, can take good care of Jing Jing here. You're just making trouble by crowding here. You should go home. We can discuss other things when Jing Jing is feeling better."
Fang Wu kept his head down and didn't say anything. Teacher Fang stuffed a card into Fang Yuenian's hand. It was his retirement pension card. "Yuenian, use this to spend money at the hospital. You know the password. Call Grandpa if anything happens."
Fang Yuenian's aunt pulled the card out and shoved it back in, saying, "This is your retirement card, Jingjing can't use it! Stop talking and let's go."
He shooed the Fang family of three away without any mercy, then turned to Hongmei, who had just arrived, and said, "Sister, thank you for your concern. You should go home too. There's a lot to do during the New Year. Take a couple of days off and I'll call you for dinner."
Hongmei agreed, held Wang Jing's hand, offered a few words of comfort, and then left.
Seeing this, Lin Guohui knew it was time for him to leave as well.
Since entering the ward, Cheng Bing knew it wasn't a good time to be at the forefront, so he stood outside. Lin Guohui waved to him, "Say hello to Niannian, we're leaving too."
The chaotic afternoon passed, and on the way back, neither father nor son uttered a word. Cheng Bing texted her sister to tell her what had happened, and Lin Guohui glanced around and asked, "Still texting Xiao Yuenian?"
Cheng Bing said, "No, send it to my sister."
Lin Guohui then shut up.
Good news doesn't travel far, but bad news travels fast. Before nightfall, everyone in Shuibi Bay had heard that the Fang couple were getting a divorce and that Fang Wu had broken his wife's bones. As a result, not only were Teacher Fang and Old Lady Fang ashamed to face anyone, but even the usually thick-skinned Fang Wu couldn't hold his head up and stayed at home for two or three days.
Fang Yuenian went home once during the trip to get Wang Jing's personal clothes and his own change of clothes. Cheng Bing took the opportunity to meet with him and learned that the doctor said Wang Jing would not be able to get out of bed for about ten days, but her spirits were still good. These days, her aunt was taking care of her, and he was running around to the hospital to get the necessary tests and signatures.
Even so, she lost a lot of weight.
That noon, Fang Yuenian's aunt had to go home. After taking care of Wang Jing, she wiped her face and went to the toilet before leaving, saying she would come back in the evening.
Fang Yuenian then accompanied Wang Jing while she received her IV drip, and the mother and son spoke quietly together.
Wang Jing had suffered a lot and lost weight, but her eyes and brows became clearer and more composed. After waking up from a nap, she called out to her son, who was looking out the window in a daze.
"Year after year".
Fang Yuenian was startled and rushed over, asking, "Hey, Mom, what's wrong?"
“Nothing much,” Wang Jing smiled. “Mom has something to tell you.”
"Okay, I'm listening." Fang Yuenian smiled at her.
“That little gray wallet in your suitcase, the one you treasure,” Wang Jing said softly, “I put a bank card in it.”
Fang Yuenian was very surprised.
"So it was you who put it there, Mom? I thought I put it in myself. I was thinking of leaving it at home this time. There's no money in that card. Even if there were, the card is from another city. I would have to pay a transaction fee if I withdrew money in Beijing. When did you put it in?"
“Before you started school last year,” Wang Jing said with a hint of smugness, “you little rascal, you’re so forgetful about your own things? The card’s PIN is your birthday, and there’s money your mom prepared for you to go to college inside.”
Fang Yuenian was even more surprised, "What?"
Since starting university, he has always used the card that came with his university admission notice. His tuition and living expenses are all on that card. As for that old high school card, he has never taken it out to use.
He suddenly froze, his whole body stiffening.
Next to Naka's photo was a picture of him and Cheng Bing!
“That’s the money I gave you for your schooling,” Wang Jing said slowly. “Keep it safe. Anyway, your grandfather has a pension, enough for him and your grandmother to spend. Your mother-in-law also has your uncle, aunt, and me to take care of her, so you don’t need to worry about her. As for your father, when he gets old, if no one wants him, you can feed him a little. As for the rest, just let him be. After you’ve rested for a while and I can walk again, I’ll get a divorce certificate with him and live a clean life.”
“Mom,” Fang Yuenian’s throat was dry, “you…”
Wang Jing suddenly looked at him, her eyes filled with insight. "What? I should have told you all this. Even before I got injured, I would have arranged it this way. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking about Cheng Bing, aren't you?"
Fang Yuenian was suddenly shocked. "Mom? You, you..."
“I know,” Wang Jing smiled slightly at her son, her voice low. “Listen to me. In the future, if he treats you well, you should treat him well too. If he doesn’t treat you well, you should keep that in mind. No matter what, you must, you absolutely must, take care of your two older sisters, understand? They are your closest relatives. You must treat them well. When you become an uncle, their children will be like your children.”
After Wang Jing finished speaking, Fang Yuenian was already shocked and stunned, and then burst into tears.
She really wanted to wipe away her son's tears.
Her son is so grown up that he would never cry in front of her again, but this incident is enough to give him a good, happy cry.
Wang Jing looked at Fang Yuenian with affection, realizing that her past expectations and hopes for him had become very simple at this moment—as long as he was happy, that was enough. She suddenly thought of a little girl who had secretly played in the sand behind the house on a certain evening more than ten years ago… But she never had the chance to make that little girl so happy.
