Chapter 20: A Chaotic Scene at the Hospital
Chapter 20: A Chaotic Scene at the Hospital
Because he was unconscious, he didn't see what happened next. When he woke up, almost both families were already in the hospital.
The last time this happened was more than a decade ago on the eve of the Lunar New Year when Fang Yuenian and Cheng Bing were born. The young and old men and women of both families appeared together at the town hospital, which was still at its old site, to welcome the arrival of two new lives.
Today, the hospital has long since moved to a new location. The wards are not very big, but they are clean enough. Fang Wu is squatting by the window in the corridor outside, smoking. Lin Guohui is standing outside the ward door. Cheng Qiuyan is holding Cheng Junjun, while Cheng Bing is squeezing in front of Teacher Fang. At the very front are Wang Jing and Old Lady Fang.
When Fang Yuenian opened her eyes, she saw her mother and grandmother with swollen eyes on both sides.
"Niannian! You're awake!" Wang Jing's tears fell like beads, her voice hoarse. "It's Mom! Niannian, where does it hurt? Where do you feel uncomfortable?"
Grandma Fang immediately burst into tears, wailing, "Niannian! Niannian! Grandma is so worried! You are my life! My very bones!"
Lin Guohui went to see a doctor.
Fang Yuenian didn't really feel any pain, just a little numbness, but it was too noisy in his ears. When he moved, he realized that he still had an IV drip in his hand, so he could only say with difficulty, "No, stop making noise!"
Grandma Fang kept crying out, "My dear grandson! You're the only son in the Fang family! If anything happens to you, I won't be able to live!"
The howl was so powerful that all the patients and their families in the ward rushed over, craning their necks to see what was going on.
Fang Yuenian said weakly, "I didn't..."
My headache wasn't usually that bad, but now it really hurts.
Amidst her mother-in-law's wailing, Wang Jing remained remarkably calm. She touched Fang Yuenian's head; his temperature was normal, and his eyes seemed quite clear. Relieved, she turned to her mother-in-law and snapped, "Shut up!"
Grandma Fang was stunned by the drink.
The ward fell silent instantly.
If there's anyone in this world who can truly control Old Lady Fang, it's only Wang Jing.
"The doctor is here!" someone shouted.
The place was noisy and crowded, and the nurses at the front were shouting, "What's all the noise about? What kind of manners are you? Make way, everyone make way!"
The onlookers dispersed temporarily, and the doctor walked in.
The doctor was quite old and experienced. When Fang Yuenian was brought in, there was a large crowd of people shouting and making a ruckus. He wasn't surprised. After finding out who the patient's parents were, he noticed that Fang Wu looked completely bewildered, while Wang Jingqiang remained calm. He said to Wang Jing, "Don't panic! Don't be flustered. Let's do some tests. The hospital has empty cars right now. If needed, we can take her to the city immediately. It won't take much time."
Wang Jing pushed aside Old Mrs. Fang, who was lunging at her to grab the doctor's clothes, and said, "Okay! I understand!"
Her actions were like a boost to morale. Although Fang Yuenian was still unconscious, the X-rays came back, and after the doctor reviewed them and confirmed that there were no major problems, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Now, ignoring the long line of "family members" stretching from the bedside to the ward door, the doctor walked to Fang Yuenian's bedside and asked, "Young man, how are you feeling? Are you dizzy? Can you see clearly?"
Fang Yuenian took a moment to assess the situation and said, "I'm not dizzy, everything is quite clear."
"We're quite lucky," the doctor said. "There's no bone fracture, just a small hematoma. We still need to observe it for a day and give it an IV drip to reduce inflammation."
"Okay, okay, thank you so much, doctor," Wang Jing wiped away her tears. "We'll listen to whatever medicine or IV fluids the doctor recommends."
"Don't worry, the cut on your head is quite large, and you've lost a lot of blood. You're probably a bit weak. We'll prescribe the medicine later."
The doctor added, "If you family members have any issues, go outside and discuss them. Don't argue inside. Let the little one rest. There's nothing to cry about. Everything's fine, isn't it?"
Wang Jing quickly blushed and agreed, "Okay, okay, the old man is being unreasonable and is very anxious. We'll go out right away."
Grandma Fang half-squatted and half-paralyzed in front of the hospital bed, refusing to get up, hoping someone would come and persuade her. But Teacher Fang left without even looking at her. Fang Wu wasn't even inside. So she could only sob softly as she got up and chased after Teacher Fang out.
Lin Guohui nudged Cheng Qiuyan's shoulder and said, "Let's go, let's get out first."
Cheng Qiuyan glanced at Cheng Bing, seemingly wanting to call out, but Lin Guohui stopped her and led her and Cheng Junjun out first.
Soon, only Wang Jing and Cheng Bing remained in the ward.
Wang Jing tidied Fang Yuenian's bedding, then tucked his hand back under the covers. Turning around, she saw Cheng Bing, and her face darkened.
"Are you with Niannian?" she asked softly.
The adults still have problems to deal with.
Cheng Bing nodded: "Okay."
“Mom,” Fang Yuenian called out to Wang Jing, “this has nothing to do with Cheng Bing or Grandpa Cheng.”
Wang Jing forced a smile. "Mom knows. It's all your dad's fault for acting crazy. You two don't need to worry about it."
After she left, Fang Yuenian asked Cheng Bing, "How are you? Did you get beaten up?"
Cheng Bing was slapped a few times on the back by Fang Wu, but it didn't hurt. He sat down on the edge of the bed and shook his head: "I'm fine."
How did I get here?
“My dad brought us all in his family’s truck.”
Fang Yuenian said with a bitter face, "Then this journey will definitely be tough."
It's probably going to be tough.
Fang Yuenian hit her head and broke it. Fang Wu stared blankly, dumbfounded. It was Cheng Jiagong who carried Fang Yuenian out. Cheng Bing quickly went to call Lin Guohui and Cheng Qiuyan for help. By the time Wang Jing, Grandma Fang, and Teacher Fang heard the news, Lin Guohui had already driven the small truck with everyone to the village entrance.
Wang Jing stumbled into the car and saw her son lying in Cheng's arms with several blood-stained towels wrapped around his head and his eyes closed.
Grandma Fang cried her heart out, cursing and hitting her son in the crowded truck without stopping the whole way.
Although Cheng Bing knew about Old Madam Fang's character before, he had never experienced it so closely. Today, he was truly amazed and shocked, but he did not intend to tell Fang Yuenian about it.
He stared at Fang Yuenian's head, which was wrapped up tightly, and asked, "Does it really not hurt anymore?"
"Um."
"You're too impulsive."
Fang Yuenian grinned, seemingly carefree.
"As long as I'm around, would I let you crack someone's skull open? Not even my father would."
Something flickered in Cheng Bing's eyes as she whispered, "Even if that mop had hit me, it wouldn't have broken my head. You're the one with the cracked skull."
Fang Yuenian sighed, "I'm really fine, but I've thought it through."
"What?"
"I want to get into the top high school."
