Chapter 2
Who are you?
Why did you only listen to the first half of the sentence?
Seeing that Xu had completely ignored the second half of the sentence, Jiang Fengyi quickly spoke up.
"You're only staying here for two or three days. Once the typhoon passes, you can go back to your own home."
"......oh"
Just as the two were about to head back, a voice calling out with feigned surprise came from not far away.
"Oh, what a coincidence!"
A well-dressed middle-aged male alpha walked towards them, wearing a bespoke suit, his large beer belly stretching the expensive fabric out of shape.
As the person approached, Xu noticed that the smile on his face was too fake, a forced smile that made him slightly uncomfortable.
She noticed that Feng Yi frowned slightly when she saw the person who came, but then quickly regained her usual expressionless demeanor.
Jiang Fengyi: "Uncle."
"Feng Yi, what brings you here today? I thought someone as busy as you would just stay at the company all day."
Although Xu didn't say a word, he was rolling his eyes inwardly. This person was not only unsightly, but also extremely unpleasant to hear.
Jiang Fengyi remained unfazed: "I never expected that someone as idle as you, Uncle, would have time to wander around outside even on a typhoon day."
Jiang Fengyi's uncle gave a fake laugh, then turned his gaze as if he had just noticed Xu Que, and steered the conversation toward her.
Who is this?
Under the guise of doing what's best for her, he nitpicked, saying, "Your mother doesn't like having too much contact with shady people outside."
After speaking, he looked Xu Que up and down, his eyes filled with undisguised contempt.
Xu smelled a strong smell of gunpowder. Before she could speak, Jiang Fengyi shielded her behind him, using his slender body to block the malice from the other side.
"Disreputable people?" Jiang Fengyi chuckled. "Speaking of disreputable people, the group around you..."
Uncle Jiang interrupted sternly: "Disrespectful to elders! No manners!"
Everyone knows that in the entire Jiang family, only Uncle Jiang is unemployed, spending his days idly, surrounded by a group of friends who only know how to eat, drink, and have fun.
At his advanced age, he can only support his family through the family trust fund, and he usually likes to come to his sister's house to freeload off her, who is in charge of the company.
"You made excuses about being too busy with work to go on the blind date your mother arranged for you, but you ended up having time to stroll around in the wind with someone else!"
Uncle Jiang finally caught Jiang Fengyi red-handed, and his accusations immediately became much louder.
"Sorry, I forgot to introduce her. She is my girlfriend of many years."
Jiang Fengyi apologized, but made no attempt to introduce the two of them.
She continued to say unpleasant things with a smile: "Also, the 'family matters' between my mother and me are none of your business, Uncle, being an 'outsider'."
"Girlfriend? Would your family even consider it dating an ordinary person?"
"That's my business. If you're too free, you might as well stay home and take care of your own child, so you don't get expelled from school again."
"Hmph! You treat my kindness like dirt, you're still as clueless as ever! I can't be bothered to talk to you anymore!"
After saying that, he left without looking back, as if he couldn't wait to go back and tell his family the news.
After the person left,
"I was planning to tell you at dinner, but I ran into my uncle beforehand."
"Just like he said, my mother arranged a blind date for me a while ago, hoping that I would get married."
Jiang Fengyi didn't say that her mother's purpose in the arranged marriage was to gain benefits and to preserve some dignity for herself.
"I didn't want to, so I hastily found you and entered into a fake marriage."
Xu listened quietly, acting as a qualified recipient of emotions.
It started raining at some point, and the slanting raindrops fell on the river breeze and rippling hair.
A cold wind carrying moisture ruffled the hem of Jiang Fengyi's dress. The usually bustling street was now deserted except for the two of them.
Jiang Fengyi walked slowly along the street, with Xu following closely behind.
The person in front of him clearly possessed everything—wealth, beauty, power—yet at this moment, Xu saw a trace of loneliness in her back.
The wind suddenly picked up, whipping up fine sand and dust from the road, howling in from all directions without any direction.
Xu quickly caught up, subconsciously walking on the outside of Jiang Fengyi, subtly blocking the chaotic drizzle and howling wind.
Without discussing it, the two quickened their pace in unison, walking side by side towards home.
Xu Que drove on the way back. She originally planned to go home first to pack a few changes of clothes, but as soon as Jiang Fengyi got in the car, she instructed, "Go straight to my place. The address is on the navigation."
After saying that, he closed his eyes and pretended to sleep.
Xu had no choice but to follow the navigation. At worst, she could make another trip.
The tightly closed car windows completely shut out the wind and rain. Not long after the car drove off, the downpour began, relentlessly pounding against the roof.
Fortunately, Jiang Fengyi's residence was nearby, and it only took a few minutes to reach her destination without traffic.
She breathed a sigh of relief: "Thank goodness I didn't drive back to my house."
Xu's rented house is in the far suburbs, and it would take almost an hour to drive there. Driving on the road in this kind of weather is not safe.
Xu planned to wait until the rain subsided before making another trip back to get the clothes.
It's easy to guess why Jiang Fengyi asked her to stay with her for the next few days: she wanted to get to know two strangers quickly so that they could learn about each other's preferences and habits by living under the same roof.
The car drove directly into the underground parking garage, and the two women got out one after the other. It was pouring rain outside, but their shoes didn't even get wet.
Looking at the garage, which was even brighter than the hotel lobby, Xu exclaimed, "No wonder it's a residential complex for the wealthy; it's so high-end."
Jiang Fengyi casually said, "I'll give you a set if you like it."
Xu Que: !!!
"Really!"
"If you play the role of a partner well, I can give you the house as a reward."
Jiang Fengyi, as expected of a boss, easily motivated the "new employees."
Sure enough, Xu nodded repeatedly after hearing this: "I will definitely do my best!"
Xu couldn't help but imagine the wonderful life she would lead, living in a mansion with a large sum of money. Full of energy, she was ready to begin fulfilling the requirements of the agreement.
The agreement states that Jiang Fengyi should be treated as a partner.
Xu stepped forward to help Jiang Fengyi open the door, but the sensor door opened automatically, denying her the chance to offer her help.
After following the other person into the elevator, Xu wanted to help press the floor button, but found that there were no floor number buttons inside the elevator.
"No...don't we need to press the floor number?"
"The elevator knows which floor I live on."
"Even the elevators in this upscale residential complex are this high-end?"
"Face scans were performed before entering the elevator, and the system linked the resident's identity information. The elevator doors would only open after arriving at the resident's floor, enhancing security and privacy."
"I'll talk to the property management later and ask them to enter your information. It will be more convenient for you since you'll be a frequent visitor."
"Should I come here often... often in the future?"
"Of course, we are currently a couple in love."
With a "ding",
The elevator doors slowly opened.
"We've arrived. Let me register your fingerprints first."
Jiang Fengyi stood at the door and naturally took Xu Que's hand and pressed it on the smart lock. She lowered her head and patiently operated it, unaware that the two were in an intimate posture.
Xu, however, was not so natural. She was used to living alone and rarely got so close to others. The slightly cool touch from her fingertips amplified her senses.
As the other person moved, soft strands of hair brushed against Xu Que's cheek, leaving a faint fragrance that drew people forward to explore the source of the scent.
Xu could only turn her head to one side, deliberately creating distance between them, and asked, trying to make conversation, "Are you...cold?"
Jiang Fengyi stopped, not understanding why she suddenly asked this question.
"You...you have a slightly low body temperature."
Jiang Fengyi then realized that her palm was tightly wrapped around the other person's fingers, and immediately let go.
"It's recorded."
After saying that, she went into the house first without waiting for Xu Que.
Xu followed her inside. After passing through the entrance hall, the view opened up considerably. The living room alone was much larger than the total area of her rented one-bedroom apartment with the bathroom.
Further inside, the sound of spatulas stirring came from the kitchen; the aunt was cooking, and the aroma of the food wafted into Xu Que's nose through the crack in the door.
"It smells so good!"
Hungry, Xu immediately forgot the slight unease that had occurred at the door, his mind preoccupied with the steaming food.
Jiang Fengyi glanced at the time: "Dinner will be ready soon."
"How do you know?" Xu asked, looking at the auntie who was still tossing the wok. "She hasn't finished yet."
"We usually eat at this time."
As soon as she finished speaking, the last dish was cooked, and the aunt came over with the plate.
"You're back just in time, it's time to eat."
After the aunt put the dishes on the table, she didn't leave. She hesitated and looked at Jiang Fengyi, unsure whether she should speak.
Jiang Fengyi asked, "What's wrong?"
"Ms. Jiang, I would like to ask for a few days off. My youngest daughter is sick and is alone in the hospital with no one to take care of her."
The incident happened suddenly, and the other aunt was on leave and had gone back to her hometown, so she couldn't come over in time, which is why she looked so troubled.
"Let Xiao Zhou drive you there. Which hospital?"
Xiao Zhou is her driver. When she's too lazy to drive, Xiao Zhou picks her up and drops her off at get off work. His working hours are very flexible.
"Miss Jiang, how have you been eating these past few days...?"
"Don't worry, I have a solution."
The aunt cleaned up the kitchen and left, leaving only the two of them at the dining table.
Xu, holding the bowl, asked her curiously, "What's your solution?"
Jiang Fengyi picked up a bite of food and said calmly, "Make it yourself."
"You can cook?"
"No, but I can learn." Then she added, "It shouldn't be difficult."
"I'll cook for you these next few days."
This time it was Jiang Fengyi's turn to ask her, "Can you cook?"
"I've always cooked for myself. Although my cooking skills can't compare to your housekeeper's, I'm still good at most home-style dishes."
Xu noticed that Jiang Fengyi took out her phone during her meal.
"What's wrong?"
"I'll transfer the money to you as payment for cooking."
Xu repeatedly refused, saying, "No need, no need, just consider it as payment for my accommodation."
The two had already exchanged contact information when they signed the marriage agreement that afternoon.
Before Xu could finish speaking, Jiang Fengyi transferred the money to him.
This was the first time Xu had ever encountered such a generous boss, and she wished she could cook two dishes for her right then and there.
The atmosphere was joyful and harmonious.
"Ding-dong—"
The doorbell rang.
"Did Auntie leave something behind?" Xu Que had just received a sum of money and was wondering where to put his skills, so he volunteered, "I'll go open the door."
"Auntie, you forgot to take..."
Xu's smile froze on his face.
"...Who are you?"
The middle-aged woman outside the door looked past Xu Que and met Jiang Fengyi's eyes inside the house.
