I immediately denied it. How could I possibly send him a warm cloak? I would personally deliver something warm to him; I wouldn't feel at ease until he was warm.
"No, I've seen it a few times, but only when I went to see the little ones. Besides, why would I ask a girl to bring you a warm cloak? If I knew you were cold, I wouldn't bring one. I would bring something to warm my hands."
"I understand, let's go take a look." Xie Yuancheng carried me out, and I leaned against him and laughed.
He said Ying'er Residence was in the backyard, and it did look a bit like a painted boat. When I got off the boat and went to open the door, I found that the door was closed.
"Tell me, did you know I was coming, so you had the door opened beforehand?"
"Impossible!" Xie Yuancheng looked a little anxious. He quickly came over to look at the lock. "What's going on? This is a lock made of black iron by the teacher. Unless the door is destroyed, it can't be opened without a key."
I comforted him, telling him not to worry. When I pushed open the door, I was amazed. Everywhere was covered with paintings, and they were continuous. I pulled Xie Yuancheng along to look at each one; they were painted so realistically that they looked like real people.
"How did you manage to draw so many? Aren't you tired?" I didn't want to leave after looking at them. Xie Yuancheng checked every part and told me to keep an eye on them while he went to find someone.
I reached out and touched the painting, but I couldn't tell what it was protected with; it was just a slippery surface. I was engrossed in looking at it when I heard a noise outside.
“This place is cleaned by professionals, and you can only go in after a while. Only you have the key. It’s strange, how did it get opened?”
It was Li Ruowei speaking. I came out and told them that there was nothing unusual inside. Xie Yuancheng went in and searched through it again. When he came out, he was carrying a book that had been scratched, just like mine, which was badly scratched.
"What is this?" Li Ruowei went over to look. "Someone deliberately damaged it. Luckily, I asked you to make a few extra copies. I have some spares."
I came over with the notebook to comfort him: "Yuancheng, don't worry, they'll find out." This is the place he fixed for me, a place that belongs only to us. How could it be targeted by someone?
Li Ruowei opened the notebook and read: "Sister-in-law, you've offended someone. I told you not to go out unnecessarily, now you know how serious this is."
She smiled at me and said she would give us the result in a while. I was reluctant to leave this place, but Xie Yuancheng was still sad, or rather angry, so I had to coax him back first.
When I went to close the door, I noticed the chain was loose. It had been very windy these past few days, which was why the door was being blown shut. I shook the chain, and the once secure chain came loose.
Xie Yuancheng came over and examined my hands: "Next time, tell me what you need to check, don't touch your hands randomly."
"I just came to close the door and found the chain was loose. I tugged at it and it fell off." I told him not to worry, that Li Ruowei had taken the book.
Meng Anshi sent men to guard the place, so I took Xie Yuancheng to stroll around the mansion. "I've never really explored it properly before, let's take a good look this time!"
Xie Yuancheng nodded emotionlessly. I knew he had put a lot of effort into this. I carried him forward, leaning on his shoulder and inhaling his faint fragrance.
"Ying'er~ Don't you dislike being affectionate with me in public the most? Why are you being so attentive~"
"I'll have to fawn over you from now on. I wonder who secretly scratched the things you worked so hard to draw, and it was just my face. I'm terrified just thinking about it."
"I'm here, so you won't be scared~"
Xie Yuancheng put his arm around me as we walked. I kept glancing at him. He was feeling a bit better now and finally had a smile on his face. He really scared me just now. His desperate look broke my heart.
I tried my best to take him around and show him interesting things from time to time. Only when Xie Yuancheng was happy did I realize how much effort he had put in to please me.
"I need to be more mature in the future, otherwise you'll suffer too much!" I sighed, something I had only been thinking but actually said out loud.
"Ying'er~ It's better if you're still a little spoiled. If I get used to your calm and mature nature, I'll feel entitled to bully you."
"Ugh~ You're so nice to me but you still have to throw cold water on my enthusiasm~ Fine, then I won't change."
"It's good now. Ying'er has also learned to overthink things."
I could tell he was in a bad mood, so I decided not to argue with him too much. I'll settle things with him slowly once Xie Yuancheng is in a better mood. We walked around for a long time, and the mansion has changed quite a bit. He's had plum blossoms and lotus flowers planted there.
The lotus pond was a temporary structure; he said he wanted to row a boat on it, just like at the Ji residence. He also liked to plant a few peach trees at the entrance, saying that it was because he planted peach trees that I married him.
"You're overthinking it. There aren't that many trees to help. It's all your doing, a combination of threats and deception."
"But Ying'er has to agree too. I was worried you'd change your mind during the wedding ceremony, so I even had Bizhu bring some sleeping pills. Anyway, once we're married, you're mine."
"Is there anything else you're afraid of?"
“There are many~” Xie Yuancheng leaned against me like a boneless person: “Ying’er, I am also a human being, how can I not be afraid of people and things.”
"Yeah, seeing how ambitious you always are, I almost forgot you're a person~"
He tossed me a string of osmanthus flowers, and I hid in his arms. Xie Yuancheng laughed heartily, a rare occurrence for him. He could be quite childlike at times, but unpredictable. He might like something now, but he might find it annoying later.
I smelled the osmanthus blossoms; they weren't in bloom yet, just branches and leaves. "Yuancheng, let me make you some flower cakes to try."
"What?" Xie Yuancheng widened his beautiful, fake peach blossom eyes: "Ying'er, let me make you something to eat. Flower cakes are very simple, the crust is very crispy, and I'll add some dried fruit to make the filling."
"You're so busy, how do you know all this stuff?" I couldn't believe he had done it.
"When we were kids, we had to be able to do everything. Back in Piaomiao Residence, I even cooked for my fellow disciples for a whole month!"
"That's amazing!" I was truly impressed, but this time I'm going with him; I can't always let him do everything himself.
"You two, stop fooling around." I was just pleading with Xie Yuancheng to agree when Li Ruowei's voice rang out: "I've found the person, do you want to go and listen?"
"Yes~" Xie Yuancheng rarely spoke in a soft voice. I held him tightly and wouldn't let him leave. He had to agree.
"Sister-in-law~ My brother is about to faint from laughing, so don't stop him, let's go together."
Li Ruowei was probably going to shake her head; she was mature and composed, while the two of us were like children in front of her. I wouldn't let Xie Yuancheng leave; he was smiling so hard his eyes were almost closed.
"No, you have to promise me first before you can go!"
