Luna ran all the way to Su Wan's tent, panting heavily from exhaustion.
The other three assistants were standing at a distance outside the tent waiting. When they saw Luna arrive, one of the assistants said, "Luna, didn't you go to invite the King? Why are you back?"
"What is the goddess doing?" Luna asked, panting, as she looked at the row of guards holding torches in front of the tent, her hands on her knees.
An assistant said, "The goddess said she is familiarizing herself with the surgical procedure and that we must not disturb her."
Another said, "The goddess said the surgical procedure is very complicated, and she needs to memorize it clearly. She told us to wait outside."
Unable to contain her fear, Luna straightened up and rushed into the tent, recalling the terrible things she had just seen and heard.
He had to tell Su Wan immediately that she must not go to the operating tent; it was a trap, and going there would mean certain death.
Although Su Wan was not from the Western Rong, her medicine did indeed alleviate the king's heart ailment. He had dealt with Su Wan several times and could not bear to see her die.
He had only taken two steps forward when a maidservant popped out of the tent, pointed at him, and said, "Hey, hey, what are you doing? Stop, stop!"
Luna ignored him and still tried to rush in.
The maid replied without hesitation, "Guards!"
The guards at the gate drew their swords halfway from their waists and shouted, "Halt, or you will be killed without mercy!"
Upon hearing this warning, Luna shuddered, stopped in her tracks, and said to the maid, "I...I have urgent business to tell the goddess."
"Even if it's an emergency, you're not allowed to trespass," the maid said angrily, pointing to the sign standing nearby. "Can't you see what's written here? Trespassers will be executed!"
Knowing that forcing his way in would be suicide, Luna had to find another way. He said to the maid, "If I'm not going in, could you please ask the goddess to come out for a moment?"
The maid looked him up and down, recognizing him as Lupin's brother. She became even angrier and said, "It was your elder brother who barged into the master's tent before, causing us servants to be scolded by the master. Now you're causing trouble again."
Luna was both anxious and angry, and wanted to force her way in, but when she saw the gleaming sword in the guard's hand, she became afraid.
"Sister, please go in and tell the goddess that I, Luna, have something to say. I'll just stand here and let you pass on a message, okay?"
Seeing that he insisted on meeting Su Wan, the maid said, "Master is preparing for surgery, and we shouldn't disturb him. I'll just pass on a message to you, saying that you have something urgent to tell Master."
"Yes, yes, that's fine." Luna wiped the cold sweat from her face and agreed repeatedly.
"I'm just relaying the message; whether the master is willing to come out and talk to you or not is none of my business."
The maid turned and went into the tent, passed through the front tent, walked to the entrance of the sleeping tent, and lifted the curtain.
Su Wan was intently focused on the table, writing the surgical steps on paper with a brush.
Although she had the surgical procedure memorized, she might become flustered and forget crucial steps during the actual surgery. This wasn't a minor procedure like appendicitis; even a slight mistake could lead to irreversible consequences.
Her solution was to write down the surgical procedure on a piece of paper and take it with her. Just like cooking according to a recipe, it doesn't matter if it's slow, as long as the steps are not omitted.
As I was concentrating on writing, a maid lifted the curtain and came in, saying, "Master, someone is looking for you."
"Who is it?" Su Wan put down her pen and looked up unhappily. "Don't you know I'm busy?"
Seeing her displeasure, the maid lowered her voice considerably and said, "It's Luna."
"Who did he come with?"
"He was all by himself, no one else was with him."
Su Wan said "Oh," and picked up her pen with relief. "Then it's nothing serious. He's one of the assistants, and he'll be helping me with the King's surgery tonight. Have him and the other assistants wait outside until I finish writing."
Seeing that Su Wan had started writing again, the maid had no choice but to turn around and leave.
Su Wan picked up her pen and thought about it carefully again, but she really couldn't think of anything that could have happened to Luna.
If Wei Jingzhuo had been discovered, Luna wouldn't have come alone; the Western Rong army would have definitely come in and arrested her. Although there was an urgent matter… could anything be more urgent than performing surgery on the King?
She shook her head and began writing furiously again.
The maid came out of the tent and said to Luna, "Luna, your master is very busy. You should wait here for her to come out. We can talk about it then."
Seeing that Su Wan refused to come out, Luna had no choice but to give up and wait in place.
Anyway, Su Wan will have to come out eventually. When that happens, he will tell Su Wan about the assassination attempt on the King and let Su Wan find an excuse to escape.
The sweat on his body had just dried when the maid came out of the tent and said, "All four of you, come into the tent and get the surgical supplies."
Luna and her three assistants entered the tent, where trays covered with white cloths were already laid out on the table.
"Put on gloves before handling them, and be careful not to drop these things," the maid reminded her. "The master said these are all sterile surgical instruments; they can't be used if they fall on the ground."
One of the assistants held the tray up with both hands and said, "Your Majesty, rest assured, we are the elite selected from four thousand people. Even if we walk with our eyes closed, we would never drop the tray."
Luna had no interest in listening to the man's boasting. She picked up the tray and stared longingly at the inner tent where Su Wan was. Before she could even open her mouth, a maid had already raised her hand to shoo her away.
"Hurry up and get out of here, the master is coming out soon."
Luna carried the tray and walked slowly at the back, looking back as she went.
The maid, seeing him constantly looking back, chuckled and said, "Luna, your master will be out soon. Why don't you just tell her what you need on the way? What's the rush?"
