It snowed all night, covering the earth in a blanket of white. The snow stopped after dawn, but the wind was still biting cold.
In this cold weather, unless there's an emergency, no one would want to go out and freeze.
The street in front of the General's Mansion was deserted and covered in white snow. A carriage from the Lin family was parked near the gate. Bai Zhiyi and her maid stood in the snow at the bottom of the steps, staring longingly at the gate of the General's Mansion, hoping it would open again.
The conflict between the General's Mansion and the Lin Mansion is escalating. On one side is her aunt's family, and on the other is her beloved.
Not wanting things to escalate out of control, she secretly set off in the middle of the night in a car through the snow, arriving at the General's Mansion before dawn, hoping to see Wei Jingzhuo.
This time, she wasn't doing it for herself, but to plead for the Lin family.
She wanted Wei Jingzhuo to spare the Lin family, and she also wanted the Lin family to spare Wei Jingzhuo. If the two sides really fought, she would no longer be able to see Wei Jingzhuo.
As expected, the general's mansion was tightly shut. The two stood in the snow for a full half hour. Although they were both wearing fox fur boots and silk cloaks, their feet were numb with cold.
During this time, someone came out, and she asked the person to inform Wei Jingzhuo that Bai Zhiyi requested an audience. The person simply said yes and went back without further ado. Then, not long after, several servants came out to sweep snow, and she again asked them to inform Wei Jingzhuo, but he still refused to see her.
She refused to give up and stood there waiting.
“Miss, why are you doing this?” The maid put her hands to her mouth and breathed hot air. “Last time you came to the General’s Mansion with that Eunuch Yang, Wei Jingzhuo hated you so much that he definitely wouldn’t see you.”
Bai Zhiyi turned her head and glared at the maid: "You're calling His Highness by his name again."
"Alright, alright, as long as Miss is happy," the maid said, pressing her warm hands against Bai Zhiyi's red, frozen face. "His Highness's heart is colder than this weather. Even if he saw you frozen like this, he wouldn't pity you."
“Where there is a will, there is a way,” Bai Zhiyi said. “If I plead earnestly, His Highness will surely agree.”
The maid said, "Aren't you afraid his guards will throw you out again?"
Bai Zhiyi said, "It's okay, then I'll crawl up to him and hug his legs tightly."
What if it gets lost again?
"Then I'll climb over there again."
“Miss, I don’t understand,” the maid asked, puzzled. “No matter how good your aunt is to you, she is still just the madam’s sister. Why are you so concerned about their family’s affairs? Is it just because she borrowed 1,500 taels of silver from you? It’s not worth it.”
Bai Zhiyi shook her head and whispered, "You don't understand."
She couldn't understand what was wrong with her aunt and uncle; they seemed possessed, insisting on fighting against the Northwest Army. No matter how she tried to persuade them, they wouldn't listen.
The Lin family's private army, disguised as bandits, destroyed the Northwest Army's grain crops—a suicidal act. With Wei Jingzhuo's abilities, he will surely be able to uncover that the Lin family was behind it all.
The Northwest Army has tens of thousands of soldiers, while the Lin family's private army is less than a thousand. Given Wei Jingzhuo's style of fighting the Western Rong, he would definitely lead his army to annihilate the Lin family. Her aunt and uncle would likely die, and her favorite little cousin, Lin Fei, would probably not survive either.
The thought of this terrible consequence sent chills down her spine.
At this moment, her dignity and pride no longer mattered. She needed to see Wei Jingzhuo immediately and beg him to spare the Lin family.
Noisy footsteps came from inside the general's mansion gate, as if many people were running towards the gate, and the sound of armor clashing could be faintly heard.
Bai Zhiyi suddenly looked up. She saw the gate wide open to both sides, and two squads of soldiers carrying guns and shields filed out from inside, standing on either side, separating her and her maid from the outside of the line.
Wei Jingzhuo, clad in silver armor and a plain robe, with a bright red cloak on his back, stepped out, carrying a silver helmet in one hand, the long plume at the top of the helmet swaying with each step. Following him, General Zhao Xian, wearing armor and robes, emerged from the gate, supported by two servants.
Bai Zhiyi's face was pale. She guessed what Wei Jingzhuo was going to do so early in the morning dressed like that.
The only option is to wipe out the Lin family.
"Your Highness!"
She cried out, trying to break through the soldiers' obstruction. But her legs were numb with cold and she couldn't take a step, collapsing to her knees. Her maid rushed forward to help her up, but she pushed her away.
Wei Jingzhuo stopped, gestured for the soldiers to move aside, and looked at her, asking, "What are you doing here?"
Bai Zhiyi said, "Your Highness, I have come to apologize for what my aunt and uncle have done, and I beg Your Highness to show leniency."
Wei Jingzhuo said coldly, "Since you know what they did, why do you still dare to plead for them?"
Zhao Xian, unable to bear it any longer, stepped forward and said, "Miss Bai, Jinzhi has already found out that it was the Lin family that destroyed the Northwest Army's supplies. You are not a daughter of the Lin family, so you should not get involved in this matter."
Seeing the soldiers clear the way, Bai Zhiyi quickly crawled a few steps to Wei Jingzhuo and said, "Your Highness, my aunt and uncle acted out of momentary folly. I know I am of lowly status and have little influence, but I beg Your Highness to spare their lives."
"Impossible." Wei Jingzhuo simply said this and turned to leave.
Bai Zhiyi felt as if she had fallen into an ice cave. Wei Jingzhuo's three words, though simple, carried a chilling murderous intent.
She lunged forward with outstretched arms and grabbed Wei Jingzhuo's leg, pleading, "Your Highness, please, please... spare the Lin family."
Wei Jingzhuo stared straight ahead and slowly said, "Let go."
"I won't let them go, Your Highness, please have mercy," Bai Zhiyi said tearfully. "They have indeed committed a grave offense. You can imprison them, punish them... anything is fine, must you really kill them all?"
Her cries were so heart-wrenching that some of the soldiers standing on either side couldn't bear it and lowered their heads.
Zhao Xian sighed and said to Wei Jingzhuo, "Jinzhi, Miss Bai isn't a member of the Lin family, yet she's pleading for them in this freezing weather. Otherwise..."
