Dr. Kang was by the bedside when he saw Su Wan arrive. He turned around and said, "Dr. Mo, you've finally come. I went to your house earlier, but you weren't there."
Su Wan said, "I was supposed to be on night duty. Come on, let me see... You guys go out first."
The three men exchanged glances and remained rooted to the spot. One of them grinned and said, "Young doctor, we're more concerned about his injuries. We'd like to stay here and watch over him."
Su Wan feigned anger and said, "The doctor needs to treat the injured. How can you all stand here? Get out, all of you get out!"
The three still refused to leave, so Su Wan put her hands on her hips and said, "Don't you want your companion to get better soon? Don't you?"
“Think about it,” the one who had answered earlier replied hastily, waving to the other two, “Come on, let’s go wait at the door.”
Seeing the three people slip out of the room, Su Wan asked Doctor Kang to close the door before standing by the bed and looking at the injured person lying on it.
A man in his twenties lay on the bed, his brows furrowed, his face twitching slightly, and his fists clenched tightly.
His shirt was open, exposing his chest, which bore a long gash, seemingly inflicted by a sharp blade. The powdery substance he wore was now stained a paste with blood. There were also several purplish-blue bruises on his abdomen, as if he had been struck by something heavy.
Dr. Kang said, "Dr. Mo, I have already applied hemostatic powder to him, and the bleeding has stopped. It's just that the wound is too deep to be stitched up."
Su Wan said, "I know. Help me turn him over so I can treat his wounds."
The man said, "Dr. Mo, my back is not injured."
Su Wan said, "So you can talk. How did you get injured?"
“My companion told Doctor Kang that we encountered bandits,” the man said with difficulty. “We had pickaxes and hoes, which scared the bandits away, but I was stabbed and punched a few times.”
Su Wan nodded and gave Doctor Kang a wink: "I understand, Doctor Kang, please turn him over and expose the back of his neck."
The man was still unwilling, so Doctor Kang pulled up his arm, which aggravated the wound on his chest, causing blood to seep out immediately, making him gasp in pain.
"Don't move around, just roll over quietly so I can treat your injury." Su Wan went to the table, opened the medicine box, and took out a silver needle. "I'll use acupuncture to relieve your pain first, and then I can stitch you up. You'll be able to walk on the ground in a little while."
Seeing that she spoke with such conviction, the man said, "If that's the case, that would be wonderful."
Su Wan took the silver needles and came to the bedside, pointing the tips of the needles at the back of his neck.
She was also worried that she might have wronged an innocent person, so she wanted to do another confirmation.
She leaned close to the man's ear and said, "Say it again, which constable... inflicted your wound?"
The man's pupils contracted sharply, and he instinctively reached for his waist.
To avoid arousing the doctor's suspicion, he hadn't carried his weapon; instead, his three companions were keeping it. When Su Wan suddenly asked him this question, he knew he'd been exposed and immediately reached for his weapon in self-defense, only to find it empty.
Seeing that he had fallen for her trap, Su Wan sneered and plunged the silver needle in her hand into the back of his neck.
She used this same trick against Yang Yaozu. She also used it against Ge Fanghai's constables when rescuing Chu Mingyao; her technique was skillful, and her accuracy in identifying acupoints was unparalleled. Once the needles were inserted, the victim would be unable to move or speak.
The man was pierced by the silver needle, and his whole body went limp. He opened his mouth to shout, but no sound came out.
Doctor Kang was initially alarmed, but when he saw that the insertion of the silver needles could instantly render a person incapacitated, he was greatly surprised and exclaimed, "Madam, what kind of technique is this?"
As soon as he finished speaking, he realized he had let something slip and quickly covered his mouth.
Su Wan shook her head helplessly, watching the man turn his eyes to look at her. She stood up, clapped her hands, and said, "My subordinate is inexperienced and exposed himself right away. I was originally going to interrogate you a bit."
Dr. Kang looked ashamed and was about to speak when a woman's painful groan suddenly came from outside the door.
Su Wan and Doctor Kang were both drawn by the groans and turned to look at the door.
"Get out of the way! Get out of the way! My wife is having a difficult childbirth... What are you three standing at the door for! Get out of the way!"
With shouts and commotion, two maids helped a young woman, who was groaning, burst through the door.
Su Wan took a closer look at the young woman's face and realized it was Meng Ruliu. Looking further down, she nearly fainted.
Meng Ruliu didn't know what was wrong with her, but with her big belly sticking out, her cotton-padded coat was stretched high, and she was holding it up with both hands while frowning and crying, looking just like a pregnant woman who was ten months pregnant.
"Doctor, I...can't give birth."
