Under the pitch-black sky, thousands of flames writhed wildly in the howling wind, illuminating the two people standing face to face.
The moment Chu Yi saw Su Wan, his eyes first flashed with surprise, then turned to sadness, then to guilt, and finally he closed his eyes, as if he did not want to look Su Wan in the eye.
The soldiers of the Southern Chu army seemed to realize that Chu Yi and Su Wan had an unusual relationship, and they all wisely kept quiet. Only the warhorses impatiently shook their heads, puffing out white breath from their nostrils, and their hooves paved the icy ground with a crisp cracking sound.
Su Wan didn't speak, she just stood there quietly.
When she saw the hint of guilt flash in Chu Yi's eyes, she knew there was no need to do anything more.
There was no need to cry, no need to plead, no need to recount Su Yuze's tragic story, and no need to tell Chu Yi how arduous her journey to save her brother was. Her mere presence here, standing before Chu Yi, spoke volumes.
Chu Yi will probably let them go.
Time ticked by, but Chu Yi still didn't open his eyes. He seemed to be hesitating, or perhaps struggling.
She couldn't help but clench her fists, her heart tightening as if an invisible hand was gripping her heart, making her breath quicken.
Chu Yi kidnapped Su Yuze on Bai Zhiyi's advice, and also launched an invasion of the Great Jin Dynasty on her recommendation. What if he had chosen to trust Bai Zhiyi?
If that happens, her actions will be tantamount to walking into a trap, and everyone will be arrested. Wei Jingzhuo's situation is already precarious; if she is also captured by Chu Yi, the Southern Chu army will gain another bargaining chip for victory, and the scales of victory will completely tip in Southern Chu's favor.
This was exactly the result Bai Zhiyi had hoped for. She had Chu Yi kidnap Su Yuze for this very reason.
She wanted to say something again several times, but she held back.
She still chose to believe Chu Yi.
Although Chu Yi seems carefree and mischievous, he has his own pride and principles. He definitely understands why she's here and will agree to her request. He did something he would never normally do; he definitely doesn't want to make another mistake.
This is an emotion that can only develop between two people after spending time together, something that Lin Qingfeng and Meng Ruliu cannot understand.
After standing for about the time it takes to sing a song, Chu Yi opened his eyes and said, "Let Su Yuze leave."
Those few words brought Su Wan a great sense of relief.
She hadn't misjudged Chu Yi; he hadn't been turned into a ruthless killer by Bai Zhiyi.
Upon hearing this, Captain Ning, who was standing to the side, stepped forward in surprise and said, "Your Highness, the Goddess has repeatedly warned that this child can influence the course of the battle, and we must not let him go."
The cavalry commander stepped forward and said, "Your Highness, please reconsider. If you release Su Yuze, we will have no way to explain ourselves when the Goddess returns."
“No need,” Chu Yi said, jumping off his horse. “Our army has already won a great victory; there’s no need to rely on a child.”
He took off his helmet and held it in the crook of his arm as he walked towards Su Wan.
Captain Ning and his companion refused to back down, following behind Chu Yi and saying, "Your Highness, could we wait for the Goddess to return and discuss it before making a decision?"
Thousands of soldiers knelt down in unison and said, "Please reconsider, Your Highness."
Chu Yi stopped and said coldly, "You all go clean up the battlefield. I want to say a few words to Madam Su."
The two stopped in their tracks, staring at Su Wan in surprise, speechless for a moment.
Su Wan stood there, smiling at Chu Yi, and said, "Brother Chu, thank you."
Chu Yi stopped in front of her, looking at her with a complicated expression, and after a long while said, "Are you going to Xiping Pass?"
“My husband is there, of course I have to go.”
"I don't want to hurt you. Take your brother and leave. Xiping Pass is impossible to defend."
"Do you really have to settle things once and for all?"
“Emperor Kangping has passed away. He is the only person in the Great Jin who poses a threat to the Southern Chu. I cannot let him go,” Chu Yi’s voice grew softer and softer. “I am a Southern Chu citizen. I cannot gamble with the fate of my country.”
Su Wan fell silent.
She didn't want Chu Yi and Wei Jingzhuo to fight, but it wasn't something she, as a woman, could control. Thousands of soldiers had followed Chu Yi over mountains and valleys to get here; how could they possibly retreat so easily?
Chu Yi has already agreed to let her and Su Yuze go; this is the greatest goodwill Chu Yi can express, and he cannot ask for anything more.
She smiled helplessly and extended her hand, saying, "Brother Chu, I understand."
This may be the last time we shake hands; we may not have the chance to meet again.
Chu Yi shook his head, not extending his hand to shake hers. He turned to look at the carriage parked behind Su Wan and said, "Let's go quickly. If Miss Qiu returns, she will definitely not let you off the hook."
Su Wan nodded and was about to turn around when the carriage door was suddenly flung open. Meng Ruliu jumped out of the carriage and cried out in a panic, "Madam, come quickly! Young Master... he's dying!"
Su Wan was taken aback. Without thinking, she rushed to the carriage. Chu Yi followed closely behind.
"How is that possible?" Su Wan exclaimed, "His fever has clearly gone down!"
Chu Yi had just agreed to release them, and if Su Yuze were to cause any trouble now, she would really go crazy.
She and Chu Yi rushed to the carriage. Su Wan walked around the door, but before she could even look inside, Captain Ning cried out from behind, "Your Highness, be careful!" Immediately afterward, the cavalry commander shouted, "Assassins!"
Su Wan didn't care about anything else and looked inside the carriage first. She found Su Yuze sitting there perfectly fine, pointing behind her and saying, "Sister, look quickly."
Seeing that Su Yuze was unharmed, Su Wan thought to herself, "So my sworn sister lied to me."
Turning around, he saw that Meng Ruliu had already locked Chu Yi's neck with her arm, and with her other hand holding a curved knife, she pointed it at Chu Yi's throat, saying, "Don't move, or I'll kill you."
