Su Wan rushed to Su Yuze's room, only to find the door wide open and Su Yuze nowhere to be seen.
She then went to Zhao Xiyue's room, which was also empty.
When she discovered that the enemy had attacked the east city, she sent someone to tell Lin Qingfeng to act quickly, as Lin Qingfeng should have already led them to the north city.
Thinking about the hallucination she had just experienced, she was still uneasy and rushed out of the house.
As they approached the courtyard gate, a soldier ran up breathlessly and said, "Reporting to Madam, the lord has repelled the Southern Chu army's attack and is currently mobilizing troops to reinforce Dongcheng. He sent me to inform you."
Su Wan said, "I understand. I'm going to Beicheng now. Go tell Ajin that General Meng has died in battle."
The soldier turned and left, and she went out to head towards the north city.
The area outside the north and south city walls was mountainous, making it impossible for the attacking army to even form ranks. Only a few soldiers patrolled to prevent small numbers of enemy troops from infiltrating and sabotaging the city from the north and south walls.
When she reached the foot of the north city wall, her legs were sore and weak. She could only lean on her knees and catch her breath for a while before walking step by step up the stone steps toward the city wall.
The captain in charge of security saw her and quickly stepped forward to greet her, saying, "Greetings, Madam."
Su Wan waved her hand, panting, "Did Guard Lin lead his men down from here?"
The captain pointed to the ladder that had been laid down on the city wall and said, "Madam, Captain Lin and the others just escorted a group of people down. There was General Meng's family, the Grand General's granddaughter, and a little boy. We just pulled the ladder up."
"That's good," Su Wan breathed a sigh of relief, walked to the city wall, and looked down at the mountain valley below.
As long as my brother and Zhao Xiyue can escape safely, that's all that matters. Meng Kuan has already died in battle, but at least his wife and parents escaped from Xiping Pass.
She sat down with her back against the arrow emplacement. The cold ground was uncomfortable, but she didn't care about that anymore.
Before they could catch their breath, a soldier pointed down and shouted, "Look, there are people down there!"
A young girl emerged from the valley below, leading a little boy as they ran desperately towards the city wall. When they were about ten meters from the wall, the girl tripped over her skirt, raised her hand, and cried out, "Help us! Enemy soldiers!"
Su Wan jumped up and looked down, her head buzzing.
The two people below are Zhao Xiyue and Su Yuze.
Su Yuze struggled to pull Zhao Xiyue's arm up, calling out, "Sister, stand up quickly!"
Now that things were urgent, he couldn't care less about what his teacher had taught him. But he was too young to pull Zhao Xiyue along, and his little face turned bright red.
"No, my knees hurt so much," Zhao Xiyue said, clutching her knees. "I can't stand up."
Another group of people emerged from the valley below; they were Meng Kuan's family. They ran frantically, constantly looking back.
Su Wan didn't know what had happened behind the ravine, but she was certain it was extremely dangerous. She pointed down and said to the soldiers, "Quickly, lower the ladder down."
Several soldiers worked together to lift the ladder and lower it down. Su Wan clasped her hands together and shouted to Zhao Xiyue, "Xiyue, stand up quickly and run to your cousin's side."
Su Yuze looked up and saw Su Wan on the city wall, and immediately burst into tears: "Sister, please save us, those people are coming again."
Su Wan called out anxiously, "Who is it?"
“Those who kidnapped me,” Su Yuze cried, “are being stopped by Guard Lin.”
At this time, the soldiers on the city wall had already lowered three ladders down the wall and then ran to get bows and crossbows.
The sound of clashing swords echoed from the valley below, followed by the emergence of a group of people. Lin Qingfeng led eight guards in a retreating fight, heading towards the city wall. Meanwhile, a group of about a dozen Southern Chu warriors wielding curved swords pressed closer.
Several times, the warriors of Southern Chu tried to bypass Lin Qingfeng and his group to pursue Meng Kuan's family. Each time, Lin Qingfeng leaped forward and stopped them.
Unable to stand, Zhao Xiyue clung to the ground with both hands and crawled down the city wall, crying as she crawled: "Sister-in-law, save me."
Su Wan looked at the group of people engaged in fierce combat. Lin Qingfeng was still holding on, but his men were no match for the Southern Chu scimitar warriors. They had only gone halfway from the mountain pass to the city wall, and five of Lin Qingfeng's men had already fallen, while only three Southern Chu warriors had fallen, all of whom were killed by Lin Qingfeng.
"Quickly, take your bows and arrows and shoot those Southern Chu warriors!" she ordered the soldiers around her, pointing downwards.
Strange, why would a scimitar warrior from Southern Chu appear here?
There were more than a dozen soldiers on the city wall, holding bows but not daring to shoot. The captain said to her, "Madam, the lord's guards are below. If we shoot arrows, we will not only fail to help, but we will also accidentally injure the lord's guards."
Su Wan thought about it and realized that the captain was right. Lin Qingfeng and his men were locked in combat with the enemy, and their backs were to the city wall. If arrows were fired, Lin Qingfeng might get hit.
Meng Kuan's family consists of either women or the elderly. Su Yuze is a child, and what if Lin Qingfeng is injured or killed, and the Southern Chu warriors commit murder?
She stepped onto the edge of the wall and climbed down the ladder, holding onto it.
The soldiers on the city wall shouted, "Madam, please come back quickly! It's too dangerous down there!"
When Su Yuze saw her climbing down the ladder, he exclaimed in alarm, "Sister, don't come down!"
Su Wan disregarded her fear and climbed down the ladder step by step. Su Yuze ran to her, hugged her tightly, and cried, "Sister, I'm scared."
“Little brother, I’m scared too,” Su Wan squatted down and said to Su Yuze, “I need you to climb this ladder right now. I need to help your sister Xiyue. Can you do it?”
Su Yuze shook his head and cried, "I...I can't do it. I was carried down by Guard Lin."
Su Wan said, "Look, Guard Lin is risking his life to buy you time. He's holding off so many enemies. Hold on tight to the ladder bar, just like those grandpas and grandmas over there, and climb up step by step, okay?"
