Chapter 87 The Potatoes Are Almost Ripe

It's almost October in the Northwest, and the weather is getting colder and colder.

On such a chilly morning, one felt increasingly reluctant to move from the bed. Only when the sun was high in the sky did Su Wan finally get out of bed, yawning.

She sleepily threw back the covers, got out of bed, stomped around on the floor a few times to find her shoes, slipped them on, then stretched her arms above her head and gave a big yawn.

She was yawning when she realized that Wei Jingzhuo was in the room.

He sat by the window, dressed in a moon-white robe, reading a book. Sunlight bathed him, making him appear as if he were surrounded by light and shadow, like a celestial being who had stepped out of a painting, incomparably handsome and flawlessly perfect.

Su Wan was stunned for a moment, and her heart skipped a beat for no reason.

Wei Jingzhuo was a person with extremely keen senses, and he had already noticed it when Su Wan woke up.

He lived in the next courtyard. He had originally planned to go to the military camp to handle military affairs today, but when he thought about how the two of them had been busy lately and hadn't spent much time with Su Wan, he decided to stay at the mansion today.

After not hearing Su Wan speak for a while, he turned around and saw that Su Wan had already gotten up and was sitting on the edge of the bed staring blankly at him.

He couldn't help but laugh.

Su Wan finally came to her senses and secretly breathed a sigh of relief: This person, trying to seduce people so early in the morning.

There's a saying that beautiful women are enchantresses. But in her opinion, handsome men are just as alluring as those enchantresses.

That simple smile is like an instant melt of millennia-old ice and snow, revealing the vibrant spring sunshine beneath the surface. That alone is enough to captivate countless naive young girls.

"Ah Jin, you're up early!" she said, only then noticing the position of the sunlight. She quickly gave an embarrassed smile. "Why didn't you go out today?"

Wei Jingzhuo put down the book in his hand, stood up, and walked slowly to her, pulling over a round stool to sit down in front of her.

"Nothing much is happening in the camp today," he told a small lie, taking her hand in his. "Is there anywhere you'd like to go, A-Wan?"

"Where do you want to go?" Su Wan looked up at the roof.

Thanks to Wei Jingzhuo's efficiency, she somehow managed to procure a considerable amount of moldy, mildewed food, which she could then use to extract antibiotics. The purification and processing of allicin had also begun, with doctors in charge. She only needed to provide guidance at key points each stage.

It seems she doesn't really have anything to do right now. Otherwise, she wouldn't be so lazy until so late.

As she was pondering this, the maidservant outside the bedroom heard the commotion inside and immediately brought in the washing utensils.

"Madam, please wash up first. I've asked the servants to prepare the meal. I told you to serve the meal when you arrived, but you said there was no rush and we could eat together when you woke up. The food is still warm on the stove. You've been starving."

Su Wan said to the maid, "Put all your things in the bathroom, I'm going to wash up there."

She tried to pull her hand away from Wei Jingzhuo's large hand, but Wei Jingzhuo held it tightly, as if he wouldn't let her go.

"What are you doing?" Su Wan laughed, adding a little more force. "Do you want me to eat without washing my hands?"

"I'll feed you," Wei Jingzhuo said in a serious tone, uttering cheesy words.

Su Wan, having failed with her first plan, devised another, lying, "Don't keep holding on like that. I just picked between my toes last night, didn't you think it smelled bad..."

Wei Jingzhuo, who likes cleanliness, subconsciously let go of his hand and smelled it under his nose. Su Wan took the opportunity to slip on her shoes and run into the bathroom.

After smelling it for a while, Wei Jingzhuo could only detect a faint lingering fragrance, and he shook his head with a smile.

When Su Wan finished washing up, the food was already laid out on the table.

Breakfast remained simple as always: two large bowls of steaming corn porridge, a plate of stir-fried vegetables, a plate of salted beans, and a plate of smashed cucumber. This time, I added a cup of hot milk.

This cup of hot milk was from a cow she bought from Luna. Besides supplying the soldiers, she was given a special cup as well.

Logically speaking, the General's Mansion shouldn't provide such a simple breakfast. However, most of the funds were spent on maintaining the Northwest Army camp. Naturally, the General's Mansion had to lower its standards for food and clothing.

Su Wan had been eating the same food at the General's Mansion for almost a month. Even the same food gets tiresome after a while, especially since it wasn't particularly delicious.

She decisively took a piece of bread from the apartment's refrigerator, tore open the packaging, broke off a piece, and put it in her mouth.

The food in the apartment is still the best.

Wei Jingzhuo was not particular about food and leisurely drank his porridge there.

He glanced at the food Su Wan had taken out and ate with great relish, then looked down at the simple food in his own bowl and put down his chopsticks.

Su Wan noticed Wei Jingzhuo put down his chopsticks and asked him, "Would you like one?"

Wei Jingzhuo nodded: "I'm a little curious."

As if by magic, Su Wan waved her hand back and forth, and a piece of bread appeared in her hand. She handed it to Wei Jingzhuo: "Here you go, this is much tastier than the food on the table."

Wei Jingzhuo took it and tasted it; it was very sweet. Even though he didn't like sweets, he didn't put it down after just one bite.

"How is it? Is it delicious?" Su Wan explained to him while eating, "This is made from flour, milk and eggs, so it's very nutritious."

At this point, she suddenly realized that she already had flour, milk, eggs, and other things, so it seemed like she could make bread.

“You’ve already ordered people to milk the cows and ewes every day for the soldiers to drink, right? We can have them send some more to the General’s Mansion. We can make some bread, which will be convenient for the soldiers to eat, and it tastes pretty good too.”

She didn't need to say more; Wei Jingzhuo would quickly understand the reasoning behind it.

The reason why the Western Rong people are so strong is that they drink milk every day and eat beef and mutton, so they are physically robust. The Western Rong soldiers are deducted from their military pay by the court, and they are lucky if they can eat their fill.

Wei Jingzhuo's eyes lit up. He looked at Su Wan and said gently, "Awan, these cattle and sheep are not enough right now. I will arrange for someone to go to Youzhou to find merchants from Xirong to buy another batch of cattle and sheep."

"No need to bother, Luna and I have a connection in Youzhou..."

Before Su Wan could finish speaking, Wei Jingzhuo put on a stern face and said unhappily, "Don't go looking for Luna anymore. I'll take care of buying the cattle and sheep."

Su Wan nodded. She only needed to give Wei Jingzhuo a hint about these things; how he actually did it was not her concern. He didn't like personally going to Luna to buy cattle and sheep, so she was happy to leave it to him.

But she doesn't have anything to do right now, so what should she do?

She suddenly remembered that the potatoes in Linyuan Village were almost ripe.

"By the way, Ah Jin, do you remember? Before we left Linyuan Village, I planted a lot of potatoes..."

"Remember."

"The potatoes are almost cooked. I'll go back to Linyuan Village in the next couple of days to arrange for someone to bring them over."
