After seeing the whole picture of the village, Jiang Huaixu gradually slowed down his pace. Jiuxi Village looked like it had been through a war and was extremely dilapidated.
To the northwest of Jiuxi Village is Jiuxi Mountain. There is a main road running from south to north in the village, with houses on both sides of the road. Many of the collapsed houses are no longer recognizable and are completely covered with weeds. The yards of those houses that have not collapsed are also occupied by weeds, which is very consistent with Jiang Huaixu's fantasy of an old deserted village with wild corpses appearing in horror movies.
"Second cousin, this village looks so desolate..." Jiang Fu looked at the surroundings and couldn't help but lean towards Jiang Huaixu. "Why are there houses but no people?"
"This place was once a war-torn area, so it's not surprising that nine out of ten houses are empty. Let's go and hear what the village head's son has to say."
The two of them held hands and ran towards the team in front.
In the team, the villagers had lost their previous enthusiasm and were all a little listless. They rushed all the way towards their destination just because they had hope. They originally thought that they could have a good sleep when they got there, but now, it was good enough that they didn't have to sleep outside.
"Brother Zhou, can we choose any of these houses?" Jiang Erlang asked.
Zhou Mancang nodded. "You guys can handle it yourselves. I see you're all in this together, so there shouldn't be any trouble over choosing a house. My home is in the next village, so feel free to come and see me if you have any problems."
Hearing these words, the Lin families slowed down their pace with their eyes flashing, pulled their children over and whispered a few words to them. This scene happened to be seen by Jiang Huaixu.
She had sharp ears, so she naturally heard what Zhou Mancang said. She asked Fu Tuan, "Tuanzi, see if there are any houses in this village that are barely habitable."
Fu Tuan, nestled comfortably in the carriage, pried his ears open and quickly came to a conclusion: "The house in the north is better than the one in the south. I dislike it, but you can make do with it."
Jiang Huaixu stopped, winked at Jiang Fu, and the two of them slipped into a small east-west path.
"Second cousin?" Jiang Fu was confused.
Jiang Huaixu pulled Jiang Fu along and ran north along a shortcut. "Let's go see if there are any habitable houses first. We don't know what the Lin families are like yet. If they want to, then it's all good for us. If not, then whoever grabs it will own it."
While Jiang Huaixu was busy looking for a house, Zhou Mancang explained everything to Jiang Zhengmao and left first.
Jiang Zhengmao raised his hand to signal for everyone to be quiet. "I believe everyone heard what Brother Zhou said just now. The most urgent thing now is to choose a house..."
Someone jumped out and retorted, "Why don't we just choose our own house? There are plenty of houses here anyway, first come, first served. What do you think, Village Chief Jiang?"
Everyone looked over and saw that it was a man from Lin's family. His hair was a mess and his body and face were so dirty that his original appearance could not be recognized.
Jiang Erlang glanced at all the people surnamed Lin, a look of understanding crossing his face. His gaze towards the group also held a certain scrutiny and a chill.
"That's fine..."
Before Jiang Zhengmao could finish his sentence, someone else interrupted him.
The woman had a loud voice. "Village Chief Jiang, right? You brought so many people with you, and now you're the village chief, but the eight households surnamed Lin are not with you. If we run into you, you must treat us equally, otherwise we will report you to the head of the village!"
Even if Jiang Zhengmao was slow to react, he sensed that this group of people were up to something, but he still said good-naturedly, "Of course, we're all from the same village. We need to get along well now so that we can be harmonious neighbors in the future. We're all refugees, so we're all from the same family. Why differentiate between you and us?"
They were so many, and if they refused, it would seem like they were bullying the minority. Seeing that the Lins didn't say anything else, he said, "That's it, go yourselves."
The man surnamed Lin ran away.
Jiang Erlang looked behind the crowd and didn't see Jiang Huaixu and Jiang Fu. He asked Jiang Sanlang, "Have you seen Ah Xu and Sister Fu?"
Jiang Sanlang looked around but couldn't find them. He said calmly, "Second brother, with my youngest sister here, are you still worried about them being bullied? It's good enough that they don't bully others."
Suddenly, a heart-wrenching cry came from afar. Jiang Sanlang was stunned. He had just finished speaking when—here it comes? He exchanged a stiff glance with his second brother, and the two of them ran north together.
The adults also heard the crying and hurried over.
Jiang Huaixu looked at the young men lying on the ground in a mess, then turned to Jiang Fu and said, "You can cry too. If you can't cry, you can just howl."
Jiang Fu, who was almost beaten, was still a little scared. Hearing what Jiang Huaixu said, she held Jiang Huaixu's arm tightly, closed her eyes and thought of her parents, and tears flowed in just a moment.
Jiang Huaixu widened his eyes in shock. This girl is better at acting than her?
When Jiang Erlang and Jiang Sanlang rushed over panting, Jiang Huaixu and Jiang Fu were standing in a yard. Jiang Fu was crying breathlessly and holding Jiang Huaixu's arm tightly.
Not far in front of them, several teenagers were still howling at the top of their lungs.
Seeing Jiang Fu crying so miserably, Jiang Sanlang rolled up his sleeves angrily and walked up to the teenager, asking while pretending to hit him, "Did these people bully you?"
The young men stopped crying and scrambled to their feet, still swearing, "If you dare touch us, you'll be dead!"
Jiang Sanlang raised his fist and was about to hit him, but was stopped by Jiang Erlang, "Don't do it, they came here to rob the house in advance, but now it seems that they haven't taken it yet?"
The ending tone rises with a hint of sarcasm.
Jiang Huaixu immediately added fuel to the fire, "How dare they bully our Afu? Even if I let them use one hand, they can't beat me. Not only are they much older than us, but they also outnumber us. They didn't arrive first and still want to snatch it, but they can't win. If I just find a crack in the ground to crawl into right now, how can they have the face to cry? They are really shameless and shameless!"
