It's July again, and the heat wave is coming.
Qiuhua just got up and helped her mother fetch a tub of water. She felt like she had just taken a bath.
Wu Xin came to find Qiuhua right after breakfast. Since school was on vacation, the two had more opportunities to meet.
He also brought two books for Qiuhua and a lunch box.
"I'd rather do more embroidery than read. I get sleepy after reading two pages."
Qiuhua took the book and said helplessly.
"How can I come here without a book?" Wu Xin blinked and asked her with a smile.
“…”
He took out the lunch box, and Qiuhua thought to herself, this guy comes here to play and brings his own lunch?
"Here you go." He handed it over.
"What? Do you want me to help you steam rice?"
"Take it for a moment."
Qiuhua took the lunch box in confusion, and felt it was unusually cool and a little icy in her hands.
"What is this?" Qiuhua asked hurriedly.
"Open it and take a look." Wu Xin said mysteriously.
I opened the lid of the lunch box and saw it was full of soup. I scooped it up with a spoon and saw glutinous rice, mung beans, red and green shredded vegetables, candied dates and winter melon candy.
“Mung bean soup!”
Qiuhua was surprised and couldn't bear to drink it.
"Drink it quickly!" Wu Xin urged.
"Why do you always bring me food? I feel embarrassed."
Wu Xin pretended to be unhappy and said, "What? You still want to be embarrassed with me? If you don't want to drink, then I'll take it back."
Qiuhua retracted her hand and moved the lunch box to her side, saying, "Who said you don't want to drink anymore?"
The mung bean soup is sweet and cool. The glutinous rice and mung beans in it are cooked well and taste very fragrant.
"Why is this soup so cold?" Qiuhua asked.
"You don't know, there's this iron box-like thing called a refrigerator. No matter what you put in it, it will come out cold."
Wu Xin pretended to be deep and said, Qiuhua thought this thing was really magical.
Seeing her so serious, Wu Xin must have believed it, so he burst out laughing.
"I'm kidding, I've only seen refrigerators at my father's house. We don't have anything like that here.
I poured boiling water into a salt water bottle yesterday evening and hung it in the well overnight."
Qiuhua listened to him, her eyes flickering slightly as she murmured, "You prepared this yesterday? How can you be so meticulous?"
"Whenever I thought about coming here, I always wanted to bring some things with me. They're just cheap things, so don't be disgusted."
"What do you dislike? Dislike this bowl of mung bean soup that you spent so much effort to make? Is that me?"
Qiuhua drank slowly, one spoonful at a time, fearing that if she drank too quickly she wouldn't be able to taste the full flavor.
"Of course you're not."
He watched her drink the mung bean soup mouthful by mouthful, her mouth opening and closing, her lips wet, and his heart went up and down in the lunch box like the mung beans she scooped up.
He quickly turned his head to face the outside. The sun was scorching outside, and the flowers and fruit trees in the yard had lost their vitality.
After Qiuhua drank the last mouthful of soup, the heat in his body was reduced by half, and he felt much more relaxed.
"Is it delicious?" Wu Xin turned around.
"Yeah." Qiuhua nodded with a satisfied expression.
"Is studying fun? Tell me about your high school experience." Qiuhua said curiously, blinking her big eyes.
"Reading isn't fun," Wu Xin said. "But I like reading."
He talked about his classmates, the tall and thin Bean Sprout, the short and fat Dwarf Winter Melon, and a classmate who liked to give nicknames to others.
"What about you? What do they call you?" Qiuhua asked.
"They called me by name."
Qiuhua didn't believe it and said, "You're lying. Tell me what they called you so I can see if it sounds like you."
Wu Xin suppressed his laughter and remained silent. Qiu Hua gently pushed him and then spoke:
"A cold-faced plaster statue."
"Pfft—hahahaha!" Qiuhua laughed until tears welled up in her eyes. "I think your classmate is really talented!"
Wu Xin was infected by her smile and started smiling too.
He then talked to Qiuhua about the teachers at school and the knowledge learned in class, and Qiuhua listened with great interest.
"Why do I feel sleepy when I listen to the teacher's lecture, but I find your lectures so interesting?"
Qiuhua asked with his cheek twitching.
Wu Xin couldn't help but reach out to scratch her nose, but he retracted his hand just after touching it a little, and his snow-white skin turned red.
"That must be because I'm good at teaching. Maybe I'll be a good teacher in the future."
Qiuhua touched the tip of her nose and felt itchy, and her face was burning.
The two chatted for the entire afternoon. Wu Xin talked a lot about school, and Qiuhua also shared with him what happened in Tahe Town, talking about Zhou Lanhua, Shisan and Wang Erhu.
Of course, both of them only reported good news and not bad news.
Wu Xin's life at school was not entirely satisfactory.
He didn't say that the dormitory windows were leaky, the quilt was not warm enough, and he couldn't sleep at night in the winter. He didn't say that most people in the class thought he was silent and different and rarely talked to him.
She did not say that the embroidery she had worked so hard on was stained, nor did she say that her eyes felt sore while embroidering at night.
Two young hearts close to each other are always thinking about each other.
After talking for a long time, there was a short silence between the two.
After a moment, Wu Xin finally spoke: "In two years, when I graduate, I'll ask Dad to invite a matchmaker over, okay?"
Qiuhua looked up at him, then immediately lowered her head. Her heart was floating high in the air, feeling soft and unreal.
"Why aren't you talking? Is what I just said okay?" Wu Xin asked.
Qiuhua nodded in affirmation.
Wu Xin stood up happily, but was at a loss as to what to say. Then he suddenly thought of something and sat down again, saying:
"After graduation, let's get engaged first, and then I'll go to college, okay? I just want you to wait for me for another year."
Qiuhua nodded several times in a row, and her head felt dizzy and swollen.
"Speak up, don't just nod. Let me know what you're thinking, okay?"
"...I...agree with what you said." Qiu Hua bit her lip and said, "I...will wait for you."
