Chapter 2 Lin Shuyue

Back by the river where he washed his face, Ye Yun picked up his backpack from the grass, put it on, and headed towards March Village.

In the village, Ye Yun walked along the road. Dressed in trendy clothes, young and handsome, and wearing glasses, he had an artistic temperament that attracted the attention of the villagers, but no one recognized who he was.

Who is this?

"You must be from the city, look like a boy from the Ye family."

"Bullshit, that kid from the Ye family is wild enough to be like this."

"That's right, that kid used to be the leader of the village kids, it can't be him."

Amidst the murmurs of the crowd, Ye Yun's figure disappeared into the distance.

When I got back to my front door, I looked at my home. It had been four years since I'd been there, and not much had changed. Even the door lock was the same one I'd had before.

Ye Yun took out the key he had taken with him four years ago, and it actually opened the door.

I closed the door, walked into the yard, and looked at the old house, everything old, nothing had changed.

Snap!

A tile fell from the eaves and almost hit Ye Yun on the head.

He looked up and chuckled, "What, you haven't been back for four years, and now you want to kill me?"

Ye Yun kicked the broken tiles aside, took a stool, sat down in the yard, and took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket—the ones he had just bought.

Four years later, he smoked again, his movements still as practiced as ever, but after taking a puff, he felt a little uncomfortable and started coughing.

He smoked a cigarette while looking around the yard.

His parents died early, and his older brother, who raised him, also died, leaving him all alone in the family.

"Okay, everyone go. It's fine if I'm alone, it's fine too..."

After smoking three or four cigarettes in a row, Ye Yun was exhausted. He hadn't been sleeping well since his older brother passed away, and today he had been on a long car ride, making him feel extremely depressed.

After getting up, I went to my room, closed the door, lay down on the bed, closed my eyes, and fell asleep.

He didn't know how much time had passed when he woke up again. It was already late, and the lights outside were glowing with a yellowish hue.

Ye Yun got out of bed, stretched, yawned, rubbed his eyes, and opened the door.

He had just woken up, and the light was a bit dazzling. When he saw the situation in the yard, he was completely stunned.

A long-haired woman was sitting on a bench in the yard, next to a basin of water that was steaming.

What happened? I woke up to find a woman in my house?

Ye Yun thought he was still half asleep, his vision was blurry, or he hadn't woken up properly. But the slap really hurt.

"Wow, this isn't a dream?"

Hearing the commotion, Lin Shuyue turned around and saw a man suddenly appear in the courtyard. Startled, she quickly covered her body with her hands and asked in a panic, "Who...who are you? What do you want?"

"Uh... I'm sorry, I think I've come to the wrong door." With that, Ye Yun turned to leave.

"Wait, what's your name?" Lin Shuyue boldly stepped forward and asked excitedly.

"Ye Yun, what's wrong?"

"Ye Yun, Ye Yun, it really is you, Ye Yun, you're really back." Upon learning the other person's identity, Lin Shuyue forgot the awkward situation and stepped forward to hug Ye Yun.

Ye Yun was a little confused; this sudden change in attitude left him bewildered. But he quickly remembered that his brother had sent him a letter last year, mentioning that he was getting married and had even suggested that Ye Yun return home, but he had refused.

"You... are Sister Shuyue?" Ye Yun asked.

"Yes, it's me, Sister Shuyue. I've been waiting for you for so long, Ye Yun. You're finally back." Lin Shuyue looked at Ye Yun excitedly, her eyes reddening and tears streaming down her beautiful face.

Seeing Lin Shuyue so agitated, Ye Yun couldn't quite understand, but then he thought about it and realized that this was in March Village, where women without husbands would have a very difficult life.

Thinking of this, Ye Yun's eyes softened, and he reached out to wipe away her tears, comforting her, "Don't worry, Sister Shuyue, I'm back."

…………

Ten minutes later, Lin Shuyue, having changed her clothes, came out of the house wearing an old-fashioned floral dress, but it couldn't hide her beauty.

Ye Yun glanced at her a couple more times, then looked away and looked at Lin Shuyue.

Lin Shuyue, recalling how Ye Yun had seen her naked earlier, blushed with shame and sat down next to Ye Yun, not daring to look him in the eye.

Ye Yun broke the awkward silence and asked, "Sister Shuyue, since my brother died half a year ago, why didn't you tell me to come back sooner?"

Lin Shuyue sighed and said, "It's not that I didn't want to tell you sooner, but your brother died from a fall from scaffolding while working on a construction site in town. I don't know anything about compensation, so I wanted to call you back, but the foreman and the others didn't want to, and they kept holding onto the letters I sent you until this month..."

After hearing this, Ye Yun clenched her fists and said angrily, "This is clearly bullying you because you are a widow and have no one to rely on. They don't want to pay more compensation, so they are preventing you from sending me a letter. I'm going to the village chief's house right now."

As he spoke, Ye Yun was about to get up.

Lin Shuyue quickly grabbed Ye Yun's arm and pleaded, "No, Ye Yun, it's all in the past now. It's no use asking now. You're the only man left in the family. You can't afford to have any more accidents happen to you."

Ye Yun acted impulsively. After calming down, he realized that so much time had passed, and asking now would be pointless. He had just returned to the village and didn't know much about things. Besides, he still had Sister Shuyue. He couldn't act impulsively like he had in the past.

"Okay, I'll do as you say." Ye Yun sat down.

Lin Shuyue breathed a sigh of relief and continued to persuade Ye Yun, "We are just ordinary people. It's okay to suffer a little loss. As long as we live peacefully from now on, that's all that matters."

"I understand. Sister Shuyue, how have you been coping these days since my brother left? Has no one been bullying you?" Ye Yun asked with concern.

Mentioning this, Lin Shuyue's eyes welled up with tears, and she choked up as she said, "It's alright, everything's fine, it's just that I'm always alone at home, it's quite lonely."

Seeing her like this, Ye Yun knew she was lying. However, he didn't call her out on it, and held Lin Shuyue's hand to comfort her, saying, "It won't happen again. I'm here for you, I'll be with you."

"Mmm!" Lin Shuyue wiped away her tears, moved, and then asked, "Ye Yun, you..."

"Don't call me Ye Yun anymore, it sounds too formal. Just call me Xiao Yun," Ye Yun said.

"Okay, Xiaoyun, how long do you plan to stay this time?"
