The yard had recently been the site of a major battle, and the corpses were still quite fresh. The scent it was smelling was coming from these corpses.
It strode into the yard, crushing the ground along its path with its immense force.
Some tiny pieces of tile would get stuck in the soles of my feet, but I seemed oblivious to the pain, and they would be crushed into pieces during my next run.
He walked a few steps to the pile of corpses, the bodies of his former subordinates.
The bodies of Dugu Xing's men were all taken away, and they were to be buried outside the city.
Soon, the sounds of flesh being torn apart and chewing and swallowing filled the courtyard.
The scouts left behind by Dugu Xing entered the courtyard and discovered this astonishing scene.
In the sunlit courtyard, a bloated monster was devouring a corpse with its back to him.
A 100-pound human body seems weightless in its hands, and it manipulates it at will.
A vertical slit opened in its belly, with sharp fangs on both sides, like a human mouth, and the corpse was swallowed up by the slit in its belly.
Its belly was like a bottomless pit; it had already devoured a corpse several times its own size, yet it showed no sign of stopping its feeding.
The scout who came in was originally just there to find out Meng Ziyi's whereabouts. He had been in the club for almost an hour and hadn't shown up yet.
Unexpectedly, instead of finding Meng Ziyi, he discovered such a horrifying scene.
Under the warm summer sun, the young scout was still sweating profusely. What he saw made him feel as if he had fallen into an ice cave, and a chill ran from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
He pulled his head back from the doorway, waved his stiff arm slightly, and planned to go back to meet the other scouts and report the matter.
As he stepped back, he stepped on a dry twig.
Unfortunately, he stepped on the branch and broke it, making a slight sound.
"Click"
The sound of a branch snapping echoed outside the courtyard, sounding unusually jarring in the quiet club.
"It's over." Alarm bells rang in the scout's mind. He dared not linger any longer and began to run at full speed.
Just as he was about to open the club's gate, the monster in the courtyard had only just arrived at the gate.
There was still time, and the scout was excited to push open the door and enter.
Before the scout could even rejoice at being out of danger, the monster's arm stretched forward, growing rapidly as if it were made of rubber, and in an instant it spanned the entire courtyard and pierced through the scout's body.
The scout had one hand on the doorknob and stared wide-eyed at his stomach in disbelief.
The armor's defensive capabilities were a joke; his entire body was pierced through by that giant hand.
Blood trickled down the edges of the mangled body, quickly staining the steps in front of the door.
At that moment, the monster's arm suddenly pulled back, and the scout suddenly mustered a burst of strength, gripping the doorknob tightly. Unfortunately, he was no match for the monster's immense strength, and his mangled body was pulled back like a rag doll as the arm retracted, leaving only one hand still pressed against the doorknob.
Before he lost consciousness, the last thing he saw was the gap in the monster's belly magnifying infinitely in front of him.
...
Scouts on the other two sides outside the door were communicating via walkie-talkie.
To prevent any loopholes, Dugu Xing left three scouts to keep watch.
"Why hasn't Xiao Jia come out yet? Has something happened?" A rough voice came through the crackling sound of electricity.
“Sun Yi, you’re still so impatient. Let’s wait and see. Xiao Jia is the best among the three of us. Even if something happens, he can still escape without any problem,” Wang Bing analyzed slowly and methodically.
"That's true, but my right eyelid just keeps twitching."
"I think you're just looking for women, aren't you? I have to say, there are quite a few pretty women among the ones we brought back this time. With your achievements alone, you could easily be assigned a beautiful young lady to marry." Wang Bing, being a seasoned pro, was exceptionally good at changing the subject, immediately hitting Sun Yi's sweet spot.
Sure enough, Sun Yi perked up immediately when this was mentioned.
They immediately put Xiao Jia's matter out of their minds and began to discuss all aspects of the woman they had brought back from there.
Another ten minutes or so passed, and even the experienced Wang Bing felt that something was amiss, because Xiao Jia still hadn't left the house.
Wang Bing decisively ended the chat and changed the channel on the walkie-talkie.
"Zhao Ding, Zhao Ding, please reply upon receipt," Wang Bing said impatiently into the walkie-talkie.
"Brother Wang? What's wrong?" Zhao Ding's voice came from the other end of the walkie-talkie.
Wang Bing told Zhao Ding what had happened.
He planned to go to the club with Sun Yi to check on the missing teammates.
Knowing that walkie-talkies have limited range, a relay station was set up along the route to minimize interference with communication.
The matter was reported up the chain of command by intermediaries, eventually reaching Zhao Rui, Dugu Xing's steward.
By the time Dugu Xing received the message, it was already late, so he decided to suppress the matter for the time being.
He is now preparing a grand feast; today is a great victory.
The message indicated that only Meng Ziyi had returned to the club alive, and he appeared flustered.
The prisoners indicated that this was their only base, suggesting they may have suffered a major defeat, resulting in heavy losses.
One person alone wouldn't pose a significant threat, so he decided to send troops out again tomorrow to resolve the matter completely.
This decision was relayed back through the layers of communication, but when Zhao Ding opened the dedicated channel to contact Wang Bing, there was only silence on the walkie-talkie.
Dusk quietly arrived, and the afterglow of the setting sun shone on the club's backyard.
The monster that had evolved from Meng Ziyi was dragging two corpses into a room full of holes.
Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that both corpses had walkie-talkies clipped to their waists.
...
Under the same setting sun, Liu Nian realized that he was the protagonist, and how could he have gone unseen by readers for several chapters in a row?
He was now only one block away from his rented apartment. Perhaps because he was almost home, the countless infected people on the road now seemed so endearing.
"It's a pity I'm not going home tonight," he muttered to himself after glancing at his watch, his tone tinged with disappointment.
Why am I so obsessed with going home?
No matter how messy it is, it's still home. Where else can you feel more at ease?
Before the system alerted that night had fallen, the vampire elegantly shattered the head of the last infected person.
After calmly picking up the fallen object, the raven followed Liu Nian into a restaurant on the street.
At the other end of the street, after sunset, the infected became visibly agitated, their lifeless eyes flashing with a blood-red light, seemingly silently proclaiming: "Who is the master of the night!"
Liu Nian lowered the restaurant's roller shutter and used extra clothes to block the window to prevent light from leaking out and causing unnecessary trouble.
After shutting out the noise from outside, he lit a kerosene lamp, filling the entire room with soft light.
Casually clear a table, take food out of the space and place it on the slightly messy table.
Looking at the delicious food in front of her, Liu Nian smiled, silently congratulating herself on surviving another day.
