Xu Tingchuan chuckled again. He didn't know if her department head had noticed her strengths, but he had.
"So, do you want to pursue a master's degree?" Xu Tingchuan's smile faded, and he asked seriously.
Ni Sitian hesitated for a moment, then shook her head: "I don't have that plan. I just feel it would be a pity to give up, after all, I've never been associated with being a top student in my life."
"Just do what you want," Xu Tingchuan said calmly.
Ni Sitian sighed inwardly. If she really went, wouldn't the marriage become even more of a sham?
He seemed completely unconcerned, calmer than she had imagined.
This is the state of their marriage: calm and undisturbed, so calm that even a huge rock thrown into it wouldn't cause a ripple.
After lunch, Xu Tingchuan poured Ni Sitian a glass of warm water, told her the dosage of her medicine as instructed by the doctor, and then went into the kitchen to wash the dishes.
Ni Sitian glanced at the pills spread out on the table, then looked at Xu Tingchuan, who had his back to her, and quietly picked out the licorice tablets inside, intending to hide them and throw them away later.
As if sensing something, Xu Tingchuan turned around and saw Ni Sitian clenching her fist. He was puzzled for a moment, walked out of the kitchen, squinted at Ni Sitian's fist, and said calmly, "Open your hand."
Ni Sitian nervously put her hands behind her back and took a step back.
"I said, take your hands out and spread them out." Xu Tingchuan's voice was very soft and slow, but it carried an undeniable air of command.
Ni Sitian's actions were exposed. She lowered her head, like a well-behaved primary school student admitting her mistake, and slowly took her hand out, but still kept her fist tightly clenched.
Xu Tingchuan was clearly losing patience. He reached out and grabbed her hand, then lowered his head and pried her fingers apart one by one.
Then, he saw two dark brown licorice tablets lying quietly in her palm. He frowned slightly, looked up at Ni Sitian, and asked unhappily, "Ni Sitian, how old are you? Why are you throwing away your medicine when you're sick?"
Ni Sitian was caught red-handed, and her ears turned slightly red. She was terrified of bitter things; when she was little and had a cold or cough, she would usually secretly throw away the bitterest licorice tablets.
Seeing her tacit agreement, Xu Tingchuan was both amused and exasperated, increasingly wondering whether he had married a wife or raised a daughter.
"You have to take the whole dose of medicine for you to recover faster." Xu Tingchuan handed her the water glass and the other medicine, then crossed his arms and stared at her, as if he were watching her take the medicine.
Ni Sitian looked at the small pills and couldn't help but swallow. With a heroic air, she raised her hand, but when she smelled the stench emanating from the licorice tablets, her face scrunched up. She opened her mouth wide and swallowed the pills. The bitter taste instantly filled her mouth, making her feel nauseous. She quickly drank some water, but accidentally choked.
Xu Tingchuan reached out and patted her gently on the back to help her catch her breath, saying, "Is taking medicine like you're going to the execution ground? Is it really that serious?"
Ni Sitian coughed until her eyes were red, looking a little pitiful. She turned around to glare at Xu Tingchuan, who spoke without thinking, but when she glared at him, she looked like a wronged little girl.
Helpless, Xu Tingchuan took a mint from his pocket and stuffed it into her hand.
Ni Sitian was slightly taken aback, staring blankly at the mint in her palm. She remembered that Xu Tingchuan didn't eat any sweets, especially candy. How could he happen to have a candy in his pocket?
"Go take a nap after you finish eating." Xu Tingchuan didn't say anything more and turned to go into the kitchen to clean up.
