The two went inside and changed into slippers.
"Go and rest for a while. I'll cook something. Take your medicine after you eat." Xu Tingchuan took off his suit jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and went to the kitchen.
Ni Sitian nestled on the sofa, hugging a cushion, and watched Xu Tingchuan busy in the kitchen with some curiosity.
This was the first time she had seen Xu Tingchuan cook since they got married, and she realized that Xu Tingchuan could cook, and that he could cook in such a pleasing way.
In the three months since their marriage, they have rarely even eaten together.
Once, when Xu Tingchuan returned from a business trip, she wanted to show her domestic skills, so she cooked a large table of dishes according to the recipe. As a result, the two of them had diarrhea all night.
Since then, she has given up cooking, and Xu Tingchuan has not commented on it, seemingly out of consideration for her young age and without demanding that she become a qualified housewife.
In truth, aside from his frequent business trips, Xu Tingchuan is a truly excellent husband. He has almost no demands on his wife, and sometimes she has the illusion that she is just a decorative object in the house, whose mere existence is enough and who doesn't need to have any function.
In fact, Xu Tingchuan was much the same way for her. It seemed that apart from their marital relationship, they were completely independent individuals.
Perhaps because they didn't love each other, they didn't have much to consider or weigh, which led to this strange balance.
She was content with this balance, but sometimes she felt empty, as if a piece of her heart was missing and could never be filled.
She knew what the missing piece was, but she never dared to touch it.
"What are you spacing out about?" Xu Tingchuan came out of the kitchen and saw Ni Sitian looking lost in thought. He walked up to her, touched her forehead, and felt that it wasn't too hot anymore. He said casually, "Looks like the injection worked well."
Ni Sitian snapped out of her daze, instinctively pulling her neck back and removing her forehead from his warm palm. She stood up and walked towards the dining table, laughing, "So you had this trick up your sleeve."
Xu Tingchuan's hand paused in mid-air for two seconds, and his brow furrowed slightly.
If he still has any complaints about Ni Sitian, it's that she sometimes avoids physical contact with him, and this is an unconscious behavior that she may not even be aware of herself.
She seemed to have a small protective circle, not easily stepping out of it, nor letting anyone else into it; clearly, he belonged to the outside of this circle.
Perhaps he should attribute this to her slow-to-warm-up nature and his busy schedule. If he wants her to realize that she is a wife, it seems he needs to spend more time with her.
"Are you about to look for an internship?" Xu Tingchuan rarely spoke at the dinner table. He usually adhered to the rule of not talking while eating or sleeping. Today, he suddenly felt that he should communicate and understand his wife. Otherwise, he didn't know how many more farcical misunderstandings like this would happen.
Ni Sitian paused for a moment, then, making sure Xu Tingchuan was talking to her, she swallowed the mouthful of lily porridge in her mouth and slowly said, "The department has two spots for postgraduate admission without examination. The director wants to recommend me for a spot at a school in a neighboring county. What do you think? Should I go?"
When she finished speaking, Xu Tingchuan paused for a moment, looked up at her, and seemed somewhat surprised that she had been recommended for postgraduate studies.
It wasn't that he looked down on her; he had seen her previous exam results, and they were all barely passing. How could she possibly get a spot?
Ni Sitian caught Xu Tingchuan's gaze and knew what he was thinking. She pouted and said, "I can't let the department head suddenly discover my shining point."
