After spending half an hour carefully selecting and buying all the ingredients, Ni Sitian returned home, rolled up her sleeves, tied on her apron, and prepared to get to work.
Last time she only looked at the recipe, so she didn't get the hang of it very well. This time she also combined it with cooking tutorial videos.
Moreover, I specifically bought two portions of ingredients, and when the first attempt failed, I made it a second time.
However, this made the meal quite a hassle.
Although the final taste was just average, it shouldn't cause the diarrhea I had last time.
Ni Sitian looked at the three dishes and one soup on the table, smiled with some satisfaction, and then glanced at the time. It was already seven o'clock. After thinking for a moment, she went to the study, found Xu Tingchuan's business card, and dialed him on the landline.
A formulaic female voice from the mobile company answered the phone: "The number you dialed is currently switched off."
Then she dialed Xu Tingchuan's company number again. It rang for a long time but no one answered. Maybe no one was working overtime on the weekend.
Ni Sitian hung up the phone, sat on the sofa, and prepared to wait. Xu Tingchuan had promised her this morning, so he should be back soon.
Ni Sitian was watching TV listlessly when, without knowing how much time had passed, her stomach suddenly started growling.
She glanced at the wall clock and saw that half an hour had passed. They should be back soon. If she ate first, her apology would seem insincere.
Ni Sitian thought for a moment, took out some cookies from the drawer, ate a few to fill her stomach, and then continued to wait for Xu Tingchuan.
The TV drama featuring middle-aged women made her feel drowsy, and she dozed off before she knew it.
The night in early October was already a bit chilly. Ni Sitian woke up from her sleep, not knowing how long she had been asleep. She sneezed, came to her senses, and looked up at the alarm clock. It was already 9:30.
She glanced into the entryway but didn't see Xu Tingchuan's shoes. Had he not returned yet?
Ni Sitian frowned, sat up and glanced at the landline phone, but there was no caller ID.
So she prepared to dial Xu Tingchuan's cell phone again. Just as she was about to pick up the receiver, the phone rang, and the caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
She answered the phone, and as soon as she said "hello," she heard Xu Tingchuan's usual cold voice on the other end: "It's me."
When Ni Sitian heard it was Xu Tingchuan, she was about to ask him something, but he said calmly, "I have some things to do outside, so I'll be going back later tonight."
"Oh," Ni Sitian responded softly, her heart filled with disappointment.
Xu Tingchuan noticed the sadness in Ni Sitian's voice, paused, and asked, "Have you had dinner yet?"
Ni Sitian looked up at the food on the table, which was no longer hot, but smiled easily at Xu Tingchuan and said, "Of course I ate it, it's already so late."
As soon as she finished speaking, her stomach rumbled twice, as if mocking her for lying.
Ni Sitian bit her lip in frustration. Luckily, Xu Tingchuan couldn't possibly hear such a faint sound, otherwise she would have been mortified.
"Okay." Xu Tingchuan saw the emergency room light turn green and said to Sitian, "Remember to take your medicine. I have some things to do here, don't wait for me, go to sleep early, bye."
Just as Ni Sitian was about to reply, the phone went dead.
Her arm stiffened for a moment, then she slowly put down the receiver, lowered her eyes, and pursed her lips.
He wouldn't be so naive as to deliberately play a trick on her because he's still angry about last night, right? Maybe he never intended to come back for dinner in the first place? Otherwise, what could be going on so late?
Ni Sitian shook her head, dismissing the obsessive thought, and walked towards the dining table.
