Chapter 539 Eavesdropping Behind the Tree

"I cut myself by accident." Ni Sitian watched as Xu Tingchuan helped her put on a band-aid.

"You always make me worry," Xu Tingchuan said with a mixture of helplessness and affection.

Ni Sitian smiled faintly and said shamelessly, "The fact that you can't rest easy about me shows that you care about me."

Xu Tingchuan really couldn't do anything about her. He got up, took off his coat, rolled up his sleeves, and went to the kitchen to finish what Ni Sitian hadn't done.

A short while later, they brought out three dishes and a soup.

Ni Sitian sat down to eat, and Xu Tingchuan watched her shovel rice into her mouth, looking as if she had something on her mind.

"What's wrong? Is there anything you can tell me?" Xu Tingchuan picked up a piece of beef for her.

Ni Sitian sighed softly and put down her chopsticks. "Today, Zhi Lan told me that she is going to Syria."

Xu Tingchuan paused, his hand still holding the food, and looked up at Ni Sitian. "Did you hear me right?"

“I wish I had misheard. She said she wanted to be a war correspondent and take those photos to record this history.” Ni Sitian sighed again. “I tried to persuade her for a long time, but it was no use. Besides, she has a plan. She’ll be leaving in two or three days.”

Xu Tingchuan frowned. He hadn't expected that incident to have such a huge impact on Xiang Zhilan. Being a war correspondent meant facing danger at any time, and what happened in that place was completely unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Both were preoccupied with their own thoughts and had lost their appetites, so they ate dinner hastily.

Xu Tingchuan went into the study, while Ni Sitian picked up her laptop and began researching the latest developments in the Syrian war. Seeing the images of gunfire and explosions, she became even more worried and didn't know what to do.

At this moment, Xu Tingchuan called Shen Muzhi and told him about Xiang Zhilan's trip to Syria.

After hanging up the phone, Shen Muzhi got up and drove off without calling a driver.

The car stopped downstairs at Xiang Zhilan's house. He got out of the car and looked up at the building. It seemed that the window reflected the happy family of Xiang Zhilan.

His heart ached terribly; he hadn't felt this bad in many years. The hurt he had caused her was beyond his wildest imagination.

She was right that day. What right did he have to say that Feng Jingxian wasn't a good person? He made her want to die.

She doesn't even want to see him. What good will it do for him to come here and try to persuade her?

Shen Muzhi withdrew his gaze, gave a self-deprecating bitter laugh, took out a cigarette, and smoked it one by one.

When the ground was covered with cigarette butts, Shen Muzhi saw Xiang Zhilan jogging out of the neighborhood wearing a tracksuit and headphones.

He couldn't help but follow her, and saw her run into the park, continuing to run around the riverbank.

The sky had darkened, and the streetlights along the riverbank shone dimly.

He watched her run back and forth several times until she stopped, panting heavily, and he hesitated whether to go over to her.

Feng Jingxian came into view, and he couldn't help but slip behind a tree, watching Feng Jingxian walk up to Xiang Zhilan.

“Your mother told me you were here, and she was right.” Feng Jingxian smiled gently. “Zhi Lan, how long are you going to hide from me?”

When Xiang Zhilan saw Feng Jingxian, she lowered her gaze. "I'm not avoiding you. I've made it very clear to you, Brother Jingxian, you deserve a better girl."

“You can’t decide for me what kind of girl is right for me,” Feng Jingxian said tenderly, holding Xiang Zhilan’s shoulders. “Zhilan, let’s just let that matter go, okay?”

"It's impossible." Xiang Zhilan shook her head and bit her lip.

"Then let me help you forget the nightmare he left on you." Feng Jingxian leaned down, looking at her with tender, seductive eyes. "Okay?"
