Chapter Forty-Eight: Unreasonable Argumentation

Gu Wei was disgusted by this awful relative of his great-grandmother's, and frowned when he recognized her.

But upon closer inspection, he noticed that the woman's clothes and hair were sloppy, and there was a row of dark purple marks on her throat and forehead. His lips curled up again.

It's estimated that Yuan Decai was beaten quite badly, and she must have been very anxious and upset.

Gu Hongjie could not forget how the Yuan family had bullied and deceived his family, and his little face immediately tightened.

Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi noticed that the two men's expressions were different, and subconsciously turned their heads to look behind them.

When they saw that it was Zhang Chunqin, their expressions turned ugly.

No one expected that after finally going out for a meal, they would run into someone who was just plain unlucky.

At first, Zhang Chunqin was too busy looking at the names of the dishes written on the blackboard and considering the amount of money in her pocket to decide which dishes would be the most economical. She didn't pay much attention to who was sitting at the tables.

At that moment, they also noticed them and their eyes widened instantly.

He took a few steps forward in disbelief, looking at Gu Hongjie, who seemed to have been reborn, and Gu Jianguo and the others, who had all gained a little weight.

In her imagination, the people who were evicted by the landlord should be living a very miserable and wretched life.

But the result was...

Zhang Chunqin knew Gu Jianguo and his group's background well, and guessed that the problem lay with a relative of the Gu family who looked very much like Gu Hongjie.

That day, she only thought the young man was tall and energetic, and dressed smartly, like someone from a well-off family, but she never expected him to be so rich.

"You guys are doing pretty well now, huh? You're so rich you can just casually eat at state-run restaurants?! And you ordered so many dishes?"

Gu Jianguo hated Zhang Chunqin intensely, and he said in a very aggressive tone: "Where we eat is our freedom, it's none of your business!"

Zhang Chunqin glared at them angrily, her eyes darting around before she angrily accused them: "Where you eat is none of my business! But my son Decai was beaten and hospitalized. You did that, didn't you? You have to give me an explanation today, or nobody will get away with it!"

Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi had no idea that Yuan Decai had been beaten.

After the initial shock came overwhelming anger at being wrongly accused, along with a sense of relief.

"Stop your nonsense! We hadn't heard anything about him being beaten before!"

Zhang Chunqin, with her neck stiff, argued vehemently: "Anyway, my Decai hasn't offended anyone, he only has conflicts with you. If it wasn't you who hit him, then who else could it be?"

Li Guizhi was so angry she couldn't speak.

Gu Jianguo was also furious: "Killing someone is just a matter of beheading them! You instigated the landlord to kick us out, and now that we've been beaten by someone, you're trying to blame us? If you ask me, he deserved to be beaten, he really deserved it. And the person who beat him, why didn't they just beat him to death!"

Zhang Chunqin originally intended to avoid responsibility as much as possible.

Her reaction to Gu Jianguo and the others confirmed that the beating had nothing to do with them, but those words were so harsh and offensive that she completely lost it.

"You're cursing my Decai so viciously, you must be the ones who beat him up!"

Fearing that his grandmother's heart condition would flare up again, Gu Wei handed her the medicine bottle before turning to Zhang Chunqin with a cold expression.

"Everything requires evidence. What evidence do you have to prove that it was my great-uncle and his family?"

Under Gu Wei's sharp gaze, Zhang Chunqin guiltily avoided his eyes, but continued to shout, "I don't care, my Decai is usually honest and law-abiding, he has no enemies, it must have been you who beat him!"

The waiters, chefs, and noodle makers at the state-run restaurant initially watched from the sidelines, just like the other diners.

Who doesn't have a heart for watching the excitement and gossiping?

Especially now that there are so few entertainment options available, and Gu Wei and his companions are well-dressed, good-looking, and generous, they attract a lot of attention and lead to many speculations.

But seeing this, I knew that this woman was clearly being unreasonable and throwing a tantrum, and I couldn't let her continue.

"This isn't your own home, it's a state-run restaurant! Get out of here!"

Facing the stern-looking waiter, Zhang Chunqin shrank back a few feet. "Why are you talking to me like that? Besides, I came here to buy stir-fried vegetables!"

The waitress shooed them away like flies, yelling, "We're all gone, get out of here!"

Zhang Chunqin glared angrily at Gu Jianguo and the others before slinking away.

This result pleased Gu Wei and the others.

Gu Hongjie was overjoyed. He took out two White Rabbit milk candies from his pocket and looked at Gu Wei with a questioning gaze.

Gu Wei guessed what he wanted to do and gave him an encouraging look.

Gu Hongjie mustered his courage, stood up, walked to the waitress, and opened his palm: "Auntie, please have some candy."

The eldest sister's name is Xu Qiuhe. Although she has a bad temper, she smiled unexpectedly when a handsome and lovable child gave her candy, which was White Rabbit candy that could only be bought in Haicheng.

"Keep it for yourself."

Gu Hongjie insisted on putting the candy into her hand, saying, "I have more, Auntie."

"Thank you."

As Xu Qiuhe spoke, she glanced at Gu Jianguo and the others, knowing that the handsome young man at the table must be someone extraordinary.

Suddenly, a thought struck her: she had heard that someone from the Forestry Bureau had been selling fashionable clothes at the gates of various factories recently; perhaps it was him who had set it up?

Gu Wei and the others finished their meal quickly and left.

Once they got home, Gu Jianguo spoke to Gu Wei alone and asked, "Did you know before that guy surnamed Yuan was beaten?"

"I don't know."

Gu Wei answered decisively.

Gu Jianguo stared straight into his eyes, and after a few seconds, he suddenly smiled and whispered, "I knew it was you!"

Gu Wei blinked, still denying it: "Grandpa, what are you talking about? It wasn't me, and it wasn't any of you."

"Yes, don't even think about pinning this on us!"

Gu Jianguo patted his shoulder twice, feeling grateful and touched.

Everything is understood without words.

Having been bullied by the Yuan family before, Gu Jianguo had considered taking revenge.

But as I get older and experience more, my former fighting spirit has been worn away.

He had to think about what would happen to his wife and children if something happened to him.

Unexpectedly, Gu Wei quietly did what he wanted to do behind the scenes!

How could he not grow to like this grandson of the eldest brother in the old man's family more and more?

I wish I could love them like my own child...

Hospital.

Yuan Decai lay in his hospital bed.

His already bruised and swollen face was now clouded with rage, and his hands were clenched into fists.

"Do you really think they hired someone to do it?"

When Zhang Chunqin returned from outside, she couldn't contain her anger and gave a long, exaggerated account.

With a dry mouth, he was gulping down water from a can.

Hearing this, she wiped her mouth forcefully and said irritably, "If it wasn't them, who else could it be? Who else have you offended? Even if there was a conflict, it wouldn't warrant beating you up so badly! This must be some deep-seated grudge!"

"Hmph! You haven't seen how your niece dresses and looks now. She's not the sickly country girl she used to be! You'd think she was from the city..."
