Chapter 27 Secret
Secret: Everyone has a memory.
The test drive trip ended in a bad mood.
After a long silence, Fu Guanshan drove the car back to the community. There was silence in the car all the way.
The next day, when Meng Chu woke up, the person in the second bedroom had disappeared, and the huge suitcase was also missing. There was a note on the table: I'm going to the road show.
Meng Chu stood at the door of the living room and was stunned for a while.
Over the past week, Fu Guanshan has specifically emphasized the return time several times, clearly hinting that he wants Meng Chu to take him to the airport.
He remembered that Fu Guanshan had booked a flight for the afternoon. Was it changed?
Meng Chu lowered his head. It seems that he is really angry.
He walked into the kitchen, turned on the fire, boiled water, and took out the frozen dumplings from the freezer. The cold, hard dough swayed in the plastic grid, and the chill passed through his fingertips. He suddenly felt indescribably lonely.
He returned to his old life.
Although he subconsciously believed that this day would eventually come, he did not expect it to be so painful.
After breakfast, he came to his workstation and turned on his phone, but there were no new messages.
He checked the flights and if he had booked the earliest available ticket, he should be on the plane now.
He wrote and deleted in the typing box, deleted and wrote again, but in the end he still didn't send it out.
What should he say?
They were arguing about buying a car, but he knew that was not the root of the argument. The fatal thing was the last sentence. Does he want to express his determination to the other party? To show that he will always believe in him and this marriage?
But even if his acting skills are good enough, will Fu Guanshan still believe him now? After all, he himself didn't believe it.
How about ignoring the argument and just chatting as usual?
This seems heartless and may add fuel to the fire.
He buried his face in his hands dejectedly.
In the past, Fu Guanshan was always responsible for finding topics and breaking the ice. Things that were so natural for the other party became a difficult dilemma for him that needed to be chewed over and over again.
He took his hand away and checked the time. Is it time for Fu Guanshan to get off the plane?
Will the other party send him a message to let him know he is safe?
If he sends it, at least he can be sure that the other party is still willing to talk to him, and he will have the courage to continue the conversation.
But until noon, there was no news from the other side. During this time, thanks to the college group, his cell phone vibrated many times, forcing him to pick it up and put it down every few minutes.
At noon, on the way to the cafeteria, he kept his hands in his pockets, close to his phone, so as not to miss any new messages.
He also put the screen under his eyes while eating.
However, the top contacts were still silent.
He has never had any requirements for meals, but today's lunch in the cafeteria was tasteless.
It turns out that he is not picky about food, but no one gives him the opportunity to be picky about food.
He barely filled his stomach, picked up his phone, and clicked on the dialog box. This morning, a teacher mistakenly sent a message from the family group to the college group. It was really funny. If it was last week, he would definitely have told Fu Guanshan.
Now, he was staring at the dialog box.
Everything is different now.
There was no one with whom to share even a little bit, no one willing to adjust his taste, no one to make him laugh with the momentum of great joy. There are endless meetings, leaders who make empty promises, and heavy and useless chores.
He put down his chopsticks, feeling extremely lonely.
The man said he wanted to help him develop the habit of accepting kindness, and yes, that's a good thing.
But if he develops this habit and the person who is kind to him leaves, what should he do?
Isn't this what he fears most?
The dream lasted only three short weeks, and when he woke up, he became like this.
It’s hard to imagine how he would collapse the moment it’s shattered if it lasts for a year, two years, or even longer.
As soon as he woke up in the morning, he regretted it. Why did he quarrel with Fu Guanshan? Why question? Why refute?
He has never quarreled with anyone, never criticized other people's opinions to their face, but the first time he quarreled, he chose the person he liked?
What on earth is going on in his mind?
Fu Guanshan said those words to protect him and for his own good. He just said thank you and that was it, why bother arguing about right or wrong? If you don't argue, you won't end up arguing and making the other person angry and run away.
The more he thought about it, the more he regretted it and the more stupid he felt.
With a distraught look on his face, he quickly dealt with the piled-up emails, graded the homework, solved the students' problems online, and then took a bus to the high-speed rail station.
No matter how much we quarrel, there is still something we need to do.
When he arrived at the hospital, it was dinner time. When he opened the door of the ward, the people inside were obviously surprised to see him.
"Xiao Meng?" Fu Lanying supported herself with her arms and sat up. "Why are you here?"
Meng Chu came over and helped to rock the bed: "Aren't you going to have surgery? Let me take a look."
"Oh, how did you know?" Fu Lanying began to doubt herself, "Did I let it slip when I called that time?"
"No," Meng Chu clarified for her, "It's a sound."
When Fu Guanshan handed him the phone, he heard the sound of the rollers going away in the background. Not long ago, he heard a similar sound in another hospital - the sound of a stretcher.
"I asked Teacher Fu, and she told me the hospital and ward number."
"You're already an adult, but you can't even keep a secret." Fu Lanying said with disdain, and then she remembered something, "Where's Guan Shan? Did he know too?"
"I haven't told him yet," Meng Chu said, "I think since Auntie didn't tell him, she probably doesn't want him to know..."
"That's great," Fu Lanying breathed a sigh of relief, "Don't tell him. He always makes a fuss about nothing. He will definitely come running over if he hears."
"Isn't it good that he is nervous about you? I think you should tell him about the surgery..."
Fu Lanying looked at him for a while and said calmly, "…It's just a hemorrhoid surgery."
Meng Chu showed a look of disapproval. Hemorrhoid surgery is also a surgery. If the patient has to go into the operating room, it means that the hemorrhoids have become serious to a certain extent.
Fu Lanying sighed, young people just love to make a fuss. "Isn't he doing some roadshow? He wouldn't have canceled his meeting just to accompany me to have my hemorrhoids removed. Just don't mention it. I have a nurse with me anyway, so it won't be a problem."
"What can we do if our elders are sick and their children are not around?" Meng Chu said, "He will feel guilty if he knows."
"Then don't let him know. After the wound heals, I'll be fine, right?" Fu Lanying said, "You guys are busy with work, just take care of your little family."
The Fu family is both open-minded and traditional. At the beginning, Fu Lanying supported him to go to Hengdian to realize his dream of becoming an actor. Now, she stubbornly believes that minor illnesses and pains should be kept secret from children, as this is for the parents' own good.
Meng Chu sat down on the chair. Because it was uncomfortable to sit, Fu Lanying asked him to shake the bed down.
"I heard from Guan Shan that you guys went to buy a car?" Fu Lanying asked, "Which one did you like?"
This hit exactly what Meng Chu was thinking. He said vaguely: "It's not decided yet."
Fu Lanying studied his expression carefully: "You chose something more expensive, and he wanted to pay for you? Did you quarrel over this?"
This guess was half right and half wrong, and Meng Chu agreed.
"Oh," Fu Lanying said, "Don't mind it, this is his old problem."
Meng Chu was a little slow to react: "What? Give money to others?"
"From what I know, my second cousin is doing business, my third cousin is having surgery, and my friends are donating to people with leukemia..."
The list grew longer and longer, and Meng Chu's eyes grew wider and wider.
"This..." Meng Chu's heart stopped beating because of the amount, "He gave away so much money?"
"As long as you have difficulties and come to him for help, he will definitely agree," Fu Lanying sighed, "To put it nicely, he is eager to help others, to put it bluntly, he is stupid and has a lot of money."
Meng Chu remembered the phone call in the kitchen. It seems that Fu Guanshan is a person who always responds to requests among his relatives and friends.
In traditional family relationships, if there is a particularly promising child, everyone will naturally regard him as a supporter. In the Fu family, this backer is obviously Fu Guanshan.
Relatives have good relations and visit each other frequently, and what is associated with this is the binding of interests. If something happens, we naturally need to help and support.
The care and gifts we received when we were children were real, and the dependence and support we received when we grew up are also real.
Meng Chu didn't know what to say, so he could only say, "He is also enthusiastic."
"Really?" Fu Lanying said, "A few years ago, he met a man at the station. The man said that he had left his wallet on the train and couldn't go back to his hometown to see his mother for the last time. He transferred 500 yuan to the man."
Meng Chu was speechless.
"I've always hoped that someone could stop him," Fu Lanying's eyes were full of hope, "He can't keep going like this."
Meng Chu didn't expect the conversation to turn to him.
But auntie, what your son needs may not be a wife, but a national anti-fraud APP.
Besides, he felt that he was not up to the task.
Not to mention controlling Fu Guanshan from giving money to others, he can't even control himself from giving money to others.
"I...he may not listen to me," Meng Chu said, "My words are definitely not as effective as Auntie's."
"If he listened to me, would it have turned out like this?" Fu Lanying paused, her tone suddenly weakened. It was the first time Meng Chu saw her hesitant. "Besides... I have no right to intervene in this matter."
Her eyes drifted off into the distance.
"It's my fault that he's like this today."
Meng Chu was surprised and a little confused.
He had thought that Fu Guanshan and his mother had an exemplary relationship, but from the tone of their voice, it seemed that they had some unspeakable past.
Also, what does "like today" mean? From his career achievements to his character and personality, there is nothing to criticize about Fu Guanshan. To put it this way, it sounds as if he has some major flaw.
"Why do you say that? Auntie obviously educated him very well."
Fu Lanying smiled, looking a little lonely. “Really?” she said. “Thank you. But… I still feel like he hasn’t gotten over the river he was at when he was 12.”
Meng Chu frowned, and suddenly, as if struck by lightning, he stood up suddenly.
Oh my god, he hadn't noticed it yet.
Looking back, everything was so obvious and so traceable.
Fu Lanying was startled by his sudden movement and stared at him in surprise.
"Auntie," he said, his mind full of thoughts, his tone vague, as if coming from another time and space, "Have you ever seen a dictionary?"
"……What?"
"Dictionary of Film, Television and Literary Plays."
