Chapter 14: Mud Room Project

When I woke up, I didn't expect that Song Yingchun was also awake. This surprised me. She actually took the initiative to keep watch, and she didn't just rely on luck and let her sister take her place.

"Are you awake, old-fashioned guy?" Song Yingchun started to spray perfume in her mouth early in the morning.

"Yeah." I answered casually, and then went to tidy up the branches. Since the blade was not easy to cut and was rather blunt, it took a lot of effort to trim each branch, so it took a lot of time.

"Don't you have anything to say to me?" Song Yingchun came over and asked.

"No, I have to work. If you are free, please help me get some earthen jars or something to help store water. It doesn't seem to work at high temperatures. It would be best to get it out and then put it in the sun to dry it until it turns grayish white. That would be better." I said.

"Tsk... boring!" Song Yingchun pouted and walked away, but it seemed that she really went back to messing with the mud.

Not long after, everyone woke up, and I gathered them together and started assigning tasks.

"I think all of us are having trouble sleeping now, so I think we should work together to help with the house project. Yingchun and Bailu, you two will be responsible for mixing the mud. Make it waterproof and add more mud. I will need it in a while, so Yunwen can just give me a hand. Let's build a good house so that we can keep out the cold and sleep more comfortably. What do you think?" I asked.

"Since Zhou Bo said so, let's work together to get things done." Song Bailu said.

I nodded.

So I asked Yunwen to help arrange the branches, five vertically and five horizontally, to form a square frame about 1.7 meters long, and fixed it with vines, and drove it into the ground about ten centimeters, placing one on each side. Then I found some hay, pasted it with the mixed soil, and hung them in the gaps one by one. After the soil dried, they became two mud walls, turning the rock that sheltered from the rain into a small house without a front face. Then I used the leftover materials to fill the front face using the same method.

Finally, it was a small achievement. At least this house can shelter us from wind and rain, and with a bonfire, it can keep us a little warm.

After two days of hard work, it was a good thing that everyone had a place to sleep. As for the problem of the floor being too hard, we dug up some loose soil and covered it inside, and then covered it with a layer of fallen leaves and hay, so that we could sleep softly. In addition, the interference of wind was reduced and the heat preservation effect was improved. I felt much more comfortable when I stayed in the simple house for a while.

Then I dug a channel outside the house so that when it rains there will be no problem with water storage, but rather the water will flow down the slope.

In the following days, we gradually optimized the living conditions. For example, the water level of the spring began to drop. After widening the spring mouth, we filled the well wall with stones and used mud jars to fill the gaps between the stones. After drying in the sun, a clean well wall was formed. We also made mud jars and ropes as equipment for well digging.

Since I went out to look for food every day, I would bring back some branches and the like, and gradually built a fence around me to prevent wild beasts from attacking at night. This basically solved the problem of living security. Moreover, Song Bailu mixed the camphor leaves around where I lived and made a few pieces of cloth to insert around, which also had an insect-proof effect.

Therefore, two of the three major problems have been solved, housing and poisonous insects, and the most critical problem, which is currently our biggest headache, is food.

It's okay to eat the collected red dates for one or two days, but it's unacceptable for a long time, and it doesn't matter if you feel full. We are not Qiu Qianchi, so how can we live on red dates?

We have been living in peace for the past few days, but our physical strength has been declining. Sometimes I stagger when I go out, and their complexions are not good. Yunwen needs better nutrition to recover, and external medicine alone is not enough. As a result, her body has started to have problems again, and she is a little unrecognizable from hunger. The other girls are not much better. I have to think about it and try my best to find a new way to get food. Even if it is really a poisonous insect, I am interested in roasting it and eating it.

That night, it was windy and rainy. The girls were lying in the house. They were so hungry that they were at a loss and unable to speak.

"Zhou Bo, you said you can handle the three problems, and we believe in you and stay here. But now there is nothing to eat, what should we do? Are we going to eat dirt?" Song Yingchun complained.

"Tell us, do we have anything else to eat besides red dates? I really can't swallow that thing in one bite. I'm afraid if I eat it, I'll vomit even more severely." Song Bailu also said.

As I was burning a bonfire, I really wanted to tell them that I really didn't have many ideas. I often went to the woods these days, and there was nothing in the woods, except for some insects, birds, squirrels and the like. Oh, and there were those strange footprints, but other than that, everything related to food was really eaten up by us. Even everything that should be dug around the jujube tree was taken away.

Food? Probably just dirt and red dates.

Nearby, there are tall trees when you walk out. Going down to the south is the coast, and to the east is near a cliff, with only one road. To the north is the jujube tree area, and going up from the jujube tree area is the direction to the top of the mountain, but there is no road to the top of the mountain, there is a fault, and I can't reach it at all, so it is basically a dead end.

In short, we are trapped in a dead end and cannot break free.

"Zhou Bo, don't be discouraged, there will be food..." Only Yunwen knows that I am the most anxious one now and need some encouragement.

"Well, thanks for the encouragement, how are you doing?" I asked.

Zhang Yunwen waved at me, but her lips were very chapped, her face was pale, and her whole body was shaking like before. I was too busy these days to pay much attention to her, and even forgot about her illness. I hurriedly touched her forehead with my hand, and it would have been fine if I hadn't touched it. Once I touched it, I was surprised to find that she had a high fever... She had a relapse, and the temperature was even higher than last time.

"Song Bailu, have you changed Yunwen's medicine in the past few days? Why does she have a high fever again?" I asked hurriedly.

Song Bailu struggled to get up from the bed, panting and said, "You blame me? Tell me, there is no medicine, how can I change her medicine? Do you think I will change? You care about her, but have you ever thought about us sisters?"

I thought about it and realized that there were indeed no edible weeds nearby, let alone medicinal herbs.

"I'm sorry." I said quickly.

"It's just right that she died. We haven't eaten meat for a long time. If she died, we could have a few more meals. Anyway, when she was alive she was just getting sick again and again, wasting resources. Only when she died could she be considered making a contribution." Song Yingchun said.

I clenched my fists, but Zhang Yunwen held my hands and shook her head at me.

But I just feel uncomfortable when I hear such horrifying words!

"Really? I think your meat is quite fragrant, why not stew it?" I said in shock.

"You dare!" the two sisters shouted in unison.

"Do you think I dare?" I was not afraid at all.

"Stop arguing and listen to me!" Zhang Yunwen exploded and shouted.

Everyone kept silent, ready to listen to her speech.

"I also want to live, but I am indeed a burden to you. If I unfortunately die, I don't mind you eating my flesh... Zhou Bo, this is the wilderness, not the civilized world. You told me this, and I think you should also understand that if I die, I will just be a pile of carbohydrates and you can eat them, right?" Zhang Yunwen said, shedding tears.

I sighed, and the sisters looked at me with a sneer.

"Okay, let's do this. Since we can't live together, let's separate and live our own lives. I can't accept cannibalism, because if you eat Yunwen, the next one will eat me. This is a matter of principle and cannot be challenged! Yunwen, let's go." After saying that, I pulled the weak Yunwen and walked out the door.

Even though it is raining, thundering and the weather conditions are not optimistic, it is not suitable for going out...
