5. The sky cleared up after the rain

5 The sky clears after the rain

◎Haven't you gone home yet?◎

Afternoon.

There was a strong wind, lightning and thunder.

The sudden rainstorm caught everyone off guard. For a moment, the campus's boulevards, playgrounds, concrete floors... were filled with only pedestrians hurrying by. The campus was even quieter than usual.

"It's raining heavily!"

In a familiar corner of the campus, a slender but slightly disheveled white figure stood under a tree swaying in the wind and rain, with the umbrella in his hand tilted casually, and some rain flowed down his shoulders, wetting a large area of his clothes.

The teaching building in the distance was hazy and everything gradually became farther away in the rain and fog.

"Ganmei... probably won't come!"

A low murmur escaped his lips, but his stomach growled in protest.

Gao Shuai squeezed the empty mineral water bottle in his hand tighter and tighter, looked up to the sky and sighed deeply. His mood was as gloomy and depressed as the weather at the moment.

Time flies, and today's lunch break seems particularly long.

Rainy days really make people sad.

“Ring, ring, ring—”

The bell rang for class. Gao Shuai looked around, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and when he opened his eyes again, he finally took a step and walked towards the classroom.

He lowered his head slightly, letting the umbrella cover the reluctance and deep thought in his eyes, and left without looking back.

The wind died down, but the rain continued.

The white figure in the wind and rain, alone, feels a cold loneliness in the huge campus.

The spacious classroom, without wind or rain, was already filled with students who had eaten, drunk and rested well; but he, with his half-full stomach and wet school uniform, was destined to be out of tune with others.

I’m used to being alone, so the sudden appearance of bright flowers may just be a dream!

Life, just like usual, should go on.

After school.

"School's out early today, let's go shopping!"

"Hey, I have two discount coupons for the milk tea shop, let's go together!"

"It's raining today, and there are few people in the library. I'm going to borrow a book to read."

"My dad is here to pick me up, I'm leaving first!"

"I don't understand this question, Student Council member, please teach me!"

"You have an exam later. Come to my house after school today and we'll review together."

The classmates went home in groups of two or three. Gao Shuai watched the scenes that happened almost every day, and for the first time, he felt an indescribable envy in his heart.

These are things that he rarely experiences in his life.

Ever since that incident, his life, everything, has changed.

The rain was drizzling like silk and the breeze was cool. Walking out of the teaching building, the air outside was damp with a hint of earth, simple and natural.

The rain is gradually getting lighter; the wind is intermittent; the sky may clear up.

The big tree in the corner of the campus has crystal water droplets hanging on every leaf, like tiny transparent pearls, lively and dazzling.

Unconsciously, he arrived here again. Gao Shuai looked at everything that was familiar in front of him and recalled the two most beautiful days last week that seemed like a dream. His heart began to beat slightly.

He put away his umbrella, lowered his eyes to look at the green grass under his feet, and when he raised his head again, there was a hint of mature determination in his eyes.

Be thankful!

Even if it's a dream!

Maybe, after today, he won't come again.

I don’t want to, and I don’t have to.

As he turned to leave, he suddenly saw a blurry figure coming from a distance - could it be his illusion - why did it feel like that figure looked so much like her?

Gao Shuai stood still, unable to move, watching the person getting closer and closer. It seemed that she was very anxious.

The beautiful light pink embroidered umbrella was suddenly folded, and the girl took two steps at a time and quickly approached him.

"Gao Shuai!" she shouted, "You... haven't come home yet?"

The girl spoke, breathing slightly, her white shoes dotted with mud and water stains, and the hem of her school uniform was also a little wet, perhaps because she walked too fast.

Why...is she here?

"You..." Gao Shuai replied, "The roads are slippery in the rain. Just walk. Don't be too anxious."

There are some things that are too difficult to say, and even if it's her, he can't say them without any scruples.

"Gao Shuai..." She hesitated, "You...it's raining today, and we have lunch break...are you here?"

There were some light beads of sweat on the girl's face, and her eyes, which usually looked like bright stars, now contained some anxiety and worry.

She came here specifically to find him!

"Here it comes." Seeing her eyes slightly widen, he added, "I'm used to it."

"I..." She took a step forward, anxious to explain, but suddenly stopped, bit her lip, lowered her head, and murmured softly, "At noon, my deskmate suddenly felt unwell, so I accompanied her to the infirmary... She was very scared, and I couldn't leave, so I stayed there the whole time... Later, the teacher came over and said that the parents had been notified, and asked me to go back to the classroom first, and the teacher would just accompany my deskmate and wait..."

The girl spoke in a halting and low voice, but he could hear her clearly.

After squeezing the broad and soft shoulder straps of her backpack, she finally raised her head and looked at him.

"Gao Shuai..." she said, "When I returned to the classroom to get my lunch box, I didn't expect... the bell rang so soon... I..."

I can’t come!

The leaves could not bear the weight of the raindrops, one drop, two drops, three drops... fell on the tall and straight nose, and also on the sweet and beautiful forehead.

The wind blows gently, and the weather after the rain is slightly chilly.

Gao Shuai's heart trembled slightly, remembering the scene he saw in the corridor, the conversation he heard in the classroom, and the lonely figure in the afternoon...

Everything, however, intertwined into their first encounter—the repeated sobs, the sweet voice calling out to him, and the ponytailed girl in her school uniform, her bright and smiling face in the sunshine...

She and he were destined to be together.

"Sweet." A smile played on his lips as he called her name.

"Gao Shuai..." She was not sure and could only respond softly.

"Now, did you bring your lunch box?"

"I..." She nodded in response with a look of surprise on her face, "I brought it."

As he spoke, he took out the pink lunch box that he was already very familiar with from his backpack.

"Did your mother make this dessert?"

"Um."

Gao Shuai smiled, tilted his head to look at the sky, stretched out his hand, spread out his palm, and said lightly: "The rain has stopped."

Gan Mei looked at him, spread out his palms, felt the air after the rain, and smiled slightly: "Well, the rain has stopped."

"The rain has stopped and the sky is clear. Let's eat the delicious food in the lunch box together!"

Gao Shuai took the initiative to speak, and Gan Meixinshi put down his heart stone, smiled, and nodded in response: "Okay, let's eat together!"

In the corners of the campus, there are lush trees, green grass, and the fragrance of flowers in the distance, carried by the wind.

After the rain, it’s a new beginning.
