To reiterate, you could tell Layton the truth, but there's no need, because doing so would only cause him more trouble.
Joyce, standing nearby, stared in disbelief at Wu Yu, who was lying without batting an eye. She had only just realized how good Wu Yu was at deceiving people. She secretly resolved to be careful of him in the future, otherwise she might be sold out by him while still counting the money for him.
"Alas, the Russell family has completely fallen. Poor Violet, she won't even be able to see her home when she comes back." Layton felt sad for Violet's situation.
"Let's go. There are no flammable materials near the manor. Let the fire go out on its own." Wu Yu urged Layton and the others to leave, lest he discover that he was the one who started the fire.
“Okay.” Layton nodded, then followed Wu Yu toward the town.
"Wu Yu, why are you with an elf?" Throughout the journey, Layton was still trying to find out information about Wu Yu through indirect means.
"I asked her to show me the way, and then she refused to leave. You know how charming I am, and I thought she was pretty, well-behaved, and obedient, so I let her continue following me." Wu Yu said this in a deliberately ambiguous way, implying that since Layton was determined not to tell him the truth, he might as well keep lying to him.
Joyce glared at Wu Yu fiercely. Wu Yu's words made her sound like a crazy woman. How could a proud elf be insulted like this? However, thinking that if she lost her temper, she might be driven away by Wu Yu, she could only suppress her anger. So she lowered her head and followed behind Wu Yu and the others angrily.
"Elves, their race has suffered heavy casualties. Since she's willing to follow you, you must treat her well," Layton said, seemingly out of some kind of compassion.
"Okay," Wu Yu replied perfunctorily.
Since returning to the human world, Wu Yu has been using his spare time to sort out the current situation.
The Elf race suffered heavy casualties during this demon invasion; the blood of the entire race was almost drained. The fortress built by the Elf Queen was abandoned three years ago, and the Elf Queen led the remaining elves away from their homeland to the Ultra Empire.
But how can one live comfortably while living under the roof of others after losing one's own territory?
The elites who followed the Elf Queen were fine; as the backbone of the resistance against the Demon King's army, they enjoyed the best treatment in the capital of the Ultra Empire. But the common elven people were not so lucky.
Even though most of the elves died, the capital city alone could not accommodate them all, so the elves broke up and dispersed to other cities in the empire.
During the war, the empire couldn't issue them any notices, so the elves had to rely on themselves to survive in a foreign land. In human kingdoms, being penniless meant they would be unable to move an inch, and they had been struggling to survive for the past few years.
Layton probably thought Joyce was a mischievous sprite he'd picked up in some city; this rugged man was actually quite kind at heart.
After learning about the current situation of the elves, Wu Yu asked Joyce if she wanted to go to the capital of the Ultra Empire. Wu Yu was confident that he could use his influence to give her a wealthy life, but Joyce resolutely refused.
It seemed that she wanted to find Violet, the culprit, more than her bleak life. Since she had someone to serve her, Wu Yu let her stay with him.
"By the way, how are your preparations for the upcoming demon invasion?" Wu Yu wasn't in the mood for idle chatter with Layton. Taking advantage of the time on the road, Wu Yu planned to find Layton, a local, to learn about the situation in Green Town.
“A quarter of the residents have already migrated inland, and the rest are either reluctant to leave their homes or are hoping for the best,” Layton replied.
"Which one are you?" Wu Yu asked, following Layton's words.
“Both are true. Even if we escape, where can we escape to? The demon invasion is a disaster for the whole world. If we don’t want to be swallowed up by the demons, then someone has to stand up. Since someone has to sacrifice, why can’t it be me?” Layton said in a tone of heroic sacrifice.
Wu Yu hadn't expected that Layton was so enlightened, but for Wu Yu, who had already become indifferent to life and death, these touching stories could no longer stir up the slightest ripple in his heart.
"What is the combat strength like? What is the deployment like?" Wu Yu only cared about these practical questions.
"Most of the adventurers in the town are natives, and they are all willing to stay and protect their home. However, there are only two high-level superhumans. The old priest is too old to exert his full strength. But with your addition, Wu Yu, at least our lack of top-tier combat power can be made up for."
Although we don't know Wu Yu's true strength, we can deduce that since Layton was a fourth-tier transcendent, Wu Yu, who could subdue him with overwhelming power, must also be a high-level transcendent.
"The villagers are very cooperative. We have already built defensive works outside the town, which will definitely keep the demons out."
"That's not enough." Wu Yu shook his head, completely unconvinced by Layton's defensive approach.
"What makes you say that?" Layton didn't think Wu Yu was picking a fight for no reason, so he asked seriously.
"You might not be at a disadvantage in a contest against superhumans, but you have absolutely no chance of winning against ordinary people. If I remember correctly, there are no troops stationed in Green Town, right?" Wu Yu explained.
“That’s right, but so what?” Layton asked, puzzled.
