"Beep, beep, beep."
This time, Wu Yu was woken up directly in bed.
The magical voice exploded in his mind, startling him so much that he jumped out of bed.
While his mind was still in a state of confusion, Wu Yu saw someone standing by his bedside.
"How did you get in?" Wu Yu asked in alarm, looking at the neatly dressed Jack. He remembered that Jack didn't have a key to his room.
Before Jack could answer, Wu Yu immediately understood the reason when he saw the door lying on the ground.
"Is it really necessary? Damaging public property requires compensation. Can't you wait until I wake up to talk about it?" Wu Yu complained, but his body still obediently started putting on his coat.
Jack looked at Wu Yu with a bit of a puzzled expression. "Didn't you hear that? It was an anti-magic alarm that works directly in the human brain through magical sound transmission. The demon army is almost here."
"No way!" Wu Yu never expected to hear such big news first thing in the morning. "Didn't you say that the last demon invasion happened hundreds of years ago?"
"So what's so strange about the demon invasion a few hundred years later?" Jack said matter-of-factly.
"Uh." Wu Yu was speechless. He quickly started getting dressed while asking about something more important, "So what should we do now?"
"Let's get out of the city first, and then make other plans."
"No way, at least there's a protective array in the deserted city. If the two of us go to the desert, wouldn't that be suicide?" Wu Yu was shocked that the usually cautious Jack would make such an absurd decision.
"Staying in the desolate city is truly waiting to die. Have you forgotten what I told you about the nature of the desolate city? It is essentially just a large beacon tower. Its only function is to transmit the message to the military headquarters in the rear through the communication array after the discovery of the demon race."
As for what will happen next, the military doesn't care at all. There are many such beacon towers in this desert, but the military's manpower is limited. They will only choose to support the areas they consider most important.
As for the city's protective formation, as far as I know, even epic-level powerhouses cannot easily break it. But once it is broken, everyone in the desolate city will be nothing more than lambs to the slaughter. Powerful adventurers may still have a chance to escape, but do you think we can run as fast as them?
I never entrust my fate to others, and my countless escapes from death in the past were not due to so-called luck.
If you feel it's safer in the city, then I'll head out first.
"No, no, no, I believe you." Wu Yu quickly reassured him, afraid that Jack would leave him alone. It wasn't that he blindly trusted Jack's judgment, but Wu Yu estimated that he would starve to death on the streets in less than two days without Jack.
Wu Yu had changed his clothes by then, and Jack left the room first without lingering. Wu Yu quickly followed.
After going downstairs, I saw that the once bustling hall was now completely empty.
"Where did those adventurers go?" Wu Yu asked curiously.
“The brave ones will go to help defend the city, while the cowards will hide,” Jack explained, then sighed.
"However, neither choice is meaningful. Their survival depends solely on when the city's protective formation is breached. At most, there is only one Saint-level expert in the desolate city. Relying on such a small force to resist the attack of the demon army is nothing short of a pipe dream."
Wu Yu nodded, indicating that he understood.
As they walked out of the tavern, they unexpectedly bumped into the proprietress and her family.
Wu Yu noticed the anxiety and unease on the landlady's face, and he could roughly guess what it was about, but Jack always made the decisions, so he didn't want to cause any trouble.
"Where are you headed, sirs?" the proprietress asked, approaching them proactively.
"We're fleeing the city." Jack's reply was as straightforward as ever, without a hint of lying.
The proprietress's eyes lit up, and she quickly pleaded, "Could you take us with you? Our family has some savings, and we can pay you if you're willing."
“No problem, but I can only bring one of you.” Jack replied quickly without even thinking, but his answer only deepened the landlady’s worried expression.
"Is it difficult to leave the city?" Wu Yu asked quietly.
"When the city's protective formation is activated, all the passages to the desolate city will be sealed off, making it impossible to enter or leave. Only in this way will those adventurers stay obediently in the city."
Wu Yu couldn't help but think more highly of Jack. He was capable of things that ordinary people couldn't do, so he was definitely not a simple guy.
"Have you thought it through? I don't have much time left," Jack urged.
"Then take our son and leave. If there's no problem in this desolate city, just let him come back on his own." The proprietress gritted her teeth and finally made a decision.
“Mother, I’m not leaving. If you’re leaving, we’ll leave together,” Jerry shouted in protest.
"Jerry, listen to me." The landlady scolded sternly, but seeing her son's stubborn expression, her tone softened. "Jerry, haven't you always wanted to be an adventurer? Follow them, and your wish will come true."
"I don't want to be an adventurer, I just want to be with you." Jerry's voice was already trembling with tears.
Wu Yu looked at Jack with a troubled expression; he knew things were in trouble.
But to everyone's surprise, Jack didn't go up to help persuade her. He drew his sword and held it to the landlady's neck, saying in an icy tone, "Jerry, I've said it before, time is running out, so now I'm giving you two choices: either you come with me, or I kill you and your child right now. Answer me in three seconds."
