Violet's first sight was of Wu Yu, who returned a friendly smile, but to her surprise, she seemed startled, her face filled with panic.
“Don’t be afraid, he’s my friend,” Jack whispered reassuringly from behind, and Violet calmed down, her expression immediately turning to surprise and delight.
Wu Yu felt a little embarrassed. Was he really that scary-looking? He could easily be considered a handsome young man. Was it because his empty left sleeve had frightened the girl? What a blunder.
Jack turned Violet's wheelchair around, and then she held up the glass shard in her hand. The yellowish-brown substance inside the shard began to flow and quickly formed characters.
"Welcome home, brother."
“Hmm.” Jack nodded, then asked, “Where are the servants? Why are you all alone here?”
The matter began to recombine and quickly formed new characters.
“I wanted to rest for a bit, so I let them leave. Don’t worry, there’s a pager. If I need them, they’ll come right away.” Violet pointed to a square remote control on the dressing table, looking completely unconcerned.
"If you want to rest, why don't you go to bed?" Jack's tone carried a hint of reproach.
"Because I thought that if I stayed by the window, I might be able to see my brother as soon as he came back, but unfortunately I fell asleep in the end." Violet stared at Jack a little embarrassedly, seemingly afraid of his scolding.
"Silly child, if I come back, the first person I'll see will definitely be you. Why do you have to go through all this trouble?" Jack sighed helplessly, then affectionately patted Violet's head.
"So tell me, what major events have happened in the past six months?" Jack suddenly asked.
Violet's expression darkened, and the words on the glass plate seemed to distort slightly.
“My father passed away a month ago, and now Uncle Benson is managing the family affairs.”
"So he didn't make it through this winter after all? But for my father, what he longed for was to die gloriously like a warrior, rather than continue to linger on his sickbed. That would be a kind of relief, wouldn't you say?" Jack's expression remained unmoved as he comforted Violet, who was clearly becoming more and more sentimental.
"Did you take your medicine today?" Seeing that Violet didn't say anything else, Jack asked the question he was most concerned about.
"The medicine tastes awful, can I take it later?" Violet's face fell, and the words on the glass shard looked pitiful.
“This is the only thing that absolutely cannot be done,” Jack said in an unyielding tone. Then he looked at the dressing table and saw that the cup used to hold the medicine was indeed there. He walked over and handed it to Violet.
Violet looked utterly desperate, but in the end, she gritted her teeth and drank the unknown liquid in the quilt in one gulp.
"Hmm."
After drinking the medicine, Violet quickly stuck out her cute little tongue, trying to get rid of the lingering taste as soon as possible.
"Okay, go back to bed and rest after you take your medicine. We'll come and wake you up for dinner."
After saying that, Jack knelt down, took off Violet's open-toed sandals, and then carried her to the bed in a princess carry.
Violet blushed and quickly covered half of her face with the blanket, leaving only her clear eyes staring intently at Jack.
Jack placed the glass plate on the dressing table, said "Go to sleep early," then closed the door and left with Wu Yu.
Jack then took Wu Yu to his room.
The siblings seemed to share similar habits; Jack's room was exceptionally simple, with virtually no decorations, which seemed completely out of place in such a large mansion.
However, Jack's room had something else extra: bookshelves that filled the entire wall. Almost every gap in the bookshelves was filled with books as thick as dictionaries. You wouldn't guess that Jack was actually a book lover.
Jack had Wu Yu sit in the only chair in the room that matched the desk, while he himself sat on the bed. The two looked at each other and remained silent for a long time.
"You two siblings have such a good relationship." In the end, Wu Yu found a pointless remark to break the silence.
“She is my most important family member.” Jack nodded, agreeing with Wu Yu’s statement.
"But what about your sister?" Wu Yu hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but then stopped.
"It's okay, just say what you want to say to me," Jack said nonchalantly.
“My sister was born prematurely, and my mother died from postpartum hemorrhage during her birth. My father is a very traditional nobleman. In his view, daughters are just tools for noble marriages. In addition, Violet killed his beloved wife, so she was not well received at home since she was a child. But she is my sister. Ever since I can remember, I have had an obsession, which is to protect Violet.”
“But I was too weak when I was young, and could only watch helplessly as the servants bullied her with my father’s tacit approval. So I practiced swordsmanship desperately, and finally when I was twelve, I defeated my father, whose strength had greatly declined due to the recurrence of old injuries. I replaced all the servants, and from then on, Violet’s life became better.”
"But this is just an external threat. How unfair is fate! She is just a weak little girl, yet she has to endure such great torment. Her vocal cords are congenitally defective, so she cannot speak. Moreover, because she was born prematurely, her body is extremely weak, to the point that she has to rely on medication to stay alive. She gets sweaty just from walking a few steps, so she has to stay in a wheelchair most of the time."
