After dinner, Jin Miao had to go to the lab that night, so An Yi had someone take her away. Jin He was too full to sit still and wanted to digest his food, so he brought up his need to go for a walk with An Yi again.
The nurse had just taken Jin He's temperature and, seeing that it had dropped, said, "Remember to walk slowly, bring your oxygen tank, and have your family keep an eye on you to make sure you don't fall."
An Yi quickly agreed, took Jin He's coat and put it on him, and then took a portable oxygen cylinder in his left hand. Seeing Jin He walking forward step by step while holding onto the wall, he quickly chased after him to help him.
"I'm much better." Jin He's complexion was rosy, probably because he had just eaten. He said, "You don't need to worry, I'm really much better. Look, I can even walk a few steps without any problems."
"I'll stay with you," An Yi said, following behind.
Jin He coughed twice and then stopped stopping him. When An Yi heard him cough, he quickly zipped up his coat, afraid that he would catch a cold.
Jin He didn't ask for too much. She just wanted to walk around downstairs a couple of times and come up when she felt less full. Otherwise, lying in bed right after a meal could easily make her feel nauseous.
It's November now, but Haicheng is in the south, so it's not cold. Jin He was wearing a cotton coat and thermal pants, and he started sweating after walking a few steps. He only took a deep breath when he could breathe in the fresh air outside.
"The weather is really nice."
An Yi followed behind him and hummed in agreement.
"Hey, don't be so nervous." Jin He took two steps forward, and a little kid with an ice pop ran past him, but Jin He's eyes followed him as if glued to him.
An Yi followed Jin He's gaze and subtly blocked Jin He's view.
Jin He: "..."
"I'm not that capricious. I know what I can and can't eat right now."
An Yi replied, "If you get hungry, you can eat another piece of corn when you get back."
Jin He came out to relieve the nausea he felt after eating, but when he heard what An Yi said, his face turned green and he quickly turned his head away. As a result, he coughed a few times because of the wind. An Yi quickly ran to the other side to shield him from the wind.
"Mommy!" the child called out in a clear voice and rushed into a woman's arms. Jin He thought the voice was quite cute and subconsciously turned her head to look. The moment she saw the woman, her smile froze on her face.
"Mommy, the sty hurts, ouch!" The child pouted at his mother, his face soft and white, like a little steamed bun.
"Okay, okay, Mom." The woman looked quite old, but you could vaguely tell that she was pretty when she was young and had taken good care of herself in recent years. However, time waits for no one and has left its mark on her face.
"Mommy, Mommy, Xiaoxi will behave well and never need another shot."
"Okay, okay, Xiaoxi is healthy and won't need any more injections."
The child was still nestled in his mother's arms, acting spoiled. Jin He couldn't hear what they were saying anymore. The moment he saw her, all the color he had managed to muster that night vanished. He slowly stood up, supporting himself on An Yi's arm, and took two steps forward, staring at the woman.
"mom……"
"Xiaoxi, remember to tell your teacher to remind you to drink water on time when you go to kindergarten tomorrow, okay? I've already sent a WeChat message to your teacher. Why are your lips still dry and chapped when you come home these past two days?"
"mom……"
Jin He moved a little closer and finally came into the woman's view. The woman's incessant chatter stopped abruptly. When she looked up, she was instantly unable to make a sound, as if something had choked her.
She stared at him for a long time before she recognized the thin young man in front of her.
"Oh, so you're here." The woman reached out and hugged the child, looking embarrassed. "What are you doing here?"
The moment An Yi saw that woman, he was so angry he almost stood on end. He wanted to take Jin He away as soon as possible, but it was too late. He could only carefully protect Jin He from behind.
"I'm hospitalized here."
"Oh, is that so? I also brought Xiaoxi here for a check-up. He's a bit smaller than other children his age, and I was worried there might be something wrong." The woman held the baby in her arms, her love overflowing. "Luckily, there's nothing wrong with him. Xiaoxi is quite healthy."
Jin He lowered her eyes, looked at the chubby child, and hummed in agreement.
"His name is Xiaoxi? How old is he?" Jin He asked softly, "I didn't know when you had a child..."
The woman touched her nose without making a sound.
A gust of wind blew by, and Jin He couldn't help but cough twice because her throat was itchy. When she looked up, she saw that the woman had hidden the child behind her back, covering her up completely.
"You child, you didn't even tell me you were sick and hospitalized so I could have come to see you."
"Didn't you block my contact information a long time ago?"
The woman was completely speechless. She said, "It's not serious, is it?"
Jin He didn't know what was going through her mind. She had been hoping that her mother, whom she hadn't seen for many years, might have matured a bit and become more affectionate towards her child.
He did mature, but his feelings weren't for him.
He no longer wanted his mother's concern; he just felt tired and wanted to go back to his ward.
“Since the illness isn’t serious, you don’t need to stay in the hospital. You’re not a delicate child,” the woman said. “If it’s just a minor cold, you can go home. There’s no need to make such a fuss.”
Jin He hummed in agreement, then seemed to remember something and asked, "Did you see Xiaomiao just now? She came to the hospital earlier too."
"I saw Sister Xiaomiao!" the child said excitedly. "Sister Xiaomiao is beautiful and good at studying. My mom told me to learn from Sister Xiaomiao!"
Jin He felt a bitter taste in her mouth.
"Xiao Miao went to university for graduate studies, why didn't you tell me?" The woman complained a little when she thought about it. "The medical school at Ocean University is one of the best in the country. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't run into you today."
“You didn’t ask either,” Jin He said coldly.
"I... I didn't ask you and you didn't even tell me."
Jin He chuckled, as if mocking, then said nothing, pinched An Yi's fingers, indicating that she wanted to leave.
These few steps had exhausted him, and all he wanted to do now was go back and rest.
I'm so tired.
"Xiao He, if there's any other way, then don't become a star." The woman felt it necessary to remind him as a mother, "These actors are out in the public eye all day, they don't amount to much. Look at your sister, she's a top student. I don't expect you to have a high level of education, but even if you drop out of high school, at least find a respectable job..."
An Yi turned around abruptly and glared at her, freezing her in place with a single look: "Shut up!"
"Ouch."
The woman was startled and stood frozen in place, stammering as if she wanted to say something.
“You think it’s not because of him…” An Yi wanted to say a few more words in defense of Jin He, but seeing his unpleasant expression, he had no choice but to shut up. The most important thing now was to get Jin He back to his ward safely!
"That crazy woman!" An Yi gritted his teeth in hatred and stepped forward to help the swaying Jin He.
"Let's go back first."
