Chapter 4 A Blessing in Disguise

Zhang Henglian lowered his head and saw a small insect gnawing on his left leg. It was a termite!

Looking at the wooden cabinet in front of me, there is an irregularly shaped hole with yellow sawdust piled up on the edge of the hole.

"Didn't I just clean out the termites in the cabinet not long ago? Could it be that the pesticide didn't kill them all?"

Zhang Heng panicked. When you find a termite, there's often already a nest nearby. Termites are insects that eat anything they find. Now he's stuck and unable to move, with no way to resist. As for getting out? That would kill him even faster.

He was caught between a rock and a hard place.

"Mouse, am I really going to be finished?"

Zhang Heng's worries soon became a reality. Soon, a dense swarm of termites emerged from the hole. They moved back and forth over Zhang Heng's body, occasionally piercing his skin with their large jaws, injecting formic acid, and tearing into his flesh.

Zhang Heng was in excruciating pain, his body shaking as if he had been electrocuted. He repeatedly waved his claws to drive away the termites, but with little effect.

The severe pain made his consciousness increasingly blurred.

"I didn't expect that after escaping from the tiger's mouth, I would fall into the wolf's den. I will fight you to the death."

In desperation, Zhang Heng completely gave up on defense. He stretched out his claws, grabbed the termite and stuffed it into his mouth.

"Let's see who eats faster."

The only thing on Zhang Heng's mind was eating. He let the pain come over him like a tide and threw the termites into his mouth without wavering.

He was constantly being eaten by termites, and the termites were constantly being eaten by him.

During the tug-of-war, his body was covered in blood, his heartbeat became weaker and weaker, and he was almost dying.

Until three golden light screens appeared in his mind.

"I've leveled up? Can I earn evolution points by hunting small insects like termites?"

Zhang Heng forced himself to stay alert and looked at the three talents.

Talent 1: Whip Tail (E Rank): Your tail will be covered with spikes, making it more flexible and aggressive.

Talent 2: Primary Self-Healing (E-level): Your injuries will recover at a slow rate.

Talent 3: Tight Skin (Level E): Your skin will become tighter, giving you stronger defense.

Seeing the termites still pouring out and his skin full of holes, Zhang Heng chose the second talent.

In this arduous and protracted battle, the self-healing effect is undoubtedly a timely help.

After his talent was selected, the originally depressed Zhang Heng suddenly became energetic, as if he had been given a shot of cardiac stimulant, and even the pain in his body was relieved.

Termites, originally the object of fear, have now become the point of evolution in Zhang Heng's eyes.

Devour, and keep on devouring.

The termites seemed to be endless, but their numbers were ultimately limited. After a while, no more termites crawled out of the wooden cabinet.

Zhang Heng used his little paws to fiddle with his ears, with confusion in his eyes.

"Before upgrading, I could get one evolution point by eating two termites. After upgrading, I need to eat four termites to get the same number of points."

"Is the acquisition of evolution points related to level, or is it related to the power gap between predator and prey?"

Zhang Heng guessed it was the latter. He thought that even if a cat ate small insects like cockroaches and termites, it would not gain any evolution points, let alone fierce beasts like tigers and wolves.

The gap in strength is too big!

Perhaps this is the balance. Powerful creatures can only gain evolutionary points by hunting powerful prey. So, being a field mouse isn't so bad after all.

It would be better if that stinky cat wasn't squatting outside the wooden cabinet.

Zhang Heng turned his head and looked directly into the black cat's gem-like eyes, without any awareness of being a rat.

"Stinky cat, let's see who can outlast whom!"

Zhang Heng calmed down and prepared for a protracted battle.

But to his surprise, after only three hours, the black cat's stomach began to rumble and it began to lick its paws back and forth.

"Meow!"

Another half an hour passed, and the black cat finally gave up wasting time endlessly. After meowing, it took light steps and ran away from the broken window.

But Zhang Heng did not act rashly. Another hour passed before he slowly squeezed out from the gap.

"We have to leave quickly."

Sniffing the fading scent of the black cat in the air, Zhang Heng knew the cat had truly left. Not wanting to miss this opportunity, he climbed onto the window sill, which was covered in broken glass.

Then he jumped down, landed in the corridor, went down the stairs, and sneaked out of the residential building.

He quietly hid behind a roadside tree as thick as a bowl, and for the first time truly observed the world after the mutation.

The biggest change is quietness.

The sounds of pots and pans clashing, car horns, motorcycle engines roaring, and vendors shouting at this time of the year have all disappeared.

There was only the rustling of the wind through the loose iron sheets of the billboard, the chirping of birds, and a creepy chewing sound coming from some dark corner.

Compared to the ears, the information from the eyes and nose is more shocking.

Under the pale light of the street lights, Zhang Heng saw the blood all over the streets, cars that had run out of control and broken down, and the scattered corpses of various animals, including cows, sheep, pigs, and even birds.

The strong smell of blood could not be dispelled at all.

This scene made Zhang Heng feel uneasy. He chose not to run around in the dark. The slightly trembling grass, the lonely trees, and the occasional strange noise coming from the trash can all made him feel threatened.

Behind the roadside trees, Zhang Heng tiptoed to start his work - digging a hole.

As the saying goes, a dragon gives birth to a dragon, a phoenix gives birth to a phoenix, and a mouse’s son will dig holes.

As a vole, digging holes was Zhang Heng's specialty. Undoubtedly, the surface was far less safe than underground, and for the sake of his life, he had to dig this hole.
