"Grandma, Grandma!"
In a quiet little mountain village, a mournful wail suddenly rang out from a dilapidated courtyard.
The neighbors, who lived not far away, heard the noise and rushed out of their yards to check. Once they confirmed that the sound might have come from Li Mai's house, they ran over there.
When they pushed open the broken wooden door and saw the dimly lit room, they were all shocked and gasped.
On the old wooden couch lay a gaunt old woman with completely white hair. There was still undried white foam at the corner of her mouth, her eyes were open, and her body was stiff.
On the ground lay a thin little girl, blood flowing from the back of her head, next to which sat a angular wooden stump.
At this moment, there was also a patch of blood on the wooden stump. It seemed that the girl had fainted and hit the back of her head on the wooden stump, causing it to bleed.
The people were dumbfounded. One died with his eyes wide open, and the other was so frightened that he fainted and then fell to his death. The deaths of this grandfather and grandson were quite tragic!
"I'll go and call the clan chief!"
A teenager who happened to be coming in saw the situation, turned around, and ran out.
"What a terrible thing!"
Li Wanchun's wife squatted down to check on Li Mai, tears welling up in her eyes.
She tore off a piece of her skirt to wrap around the bleeding spot on Li Mai's head before carrying her to the wooden bed.
To her surprise, just as she reached out to help Li Mai up, Li Mai suddenly opened her eyes and stared at her intently.
"Oh, Mother..."
Li Wanchun's wife screamed in fright and fell to the ground, backing away.
Just as the others pushed the old lady inside, they heard a scream. Startled, they turned around and saw Li Mai staring at them with wide eyes.
"Ah, a ghost!"
The men who had just pushed the old woman's body were so frightened they almost lost their minds. They didn't care about Li Wanchun's wife sitting on the ground anymore. They screamed and trampled on her as they rushed outside.
Li Wanchun's wife was so scared and her hands and legs ached from being stepped on that she rolled her eyes and fainted.
...
Li Mai looked at what was in front of her warily, a moment of confusion in her eyes.
The next moment, he raised his hand and looked at it, his eyes widening instantly – it wasn't his own hand.
She and her teammates had just killed nine level-five mutated beasts, but before she could even turn around to talk to them, she felt a pain in her back.
The moment she collapsed and lost consciousness, she felt her spiritual energy draining away and her mental strength dissipating—a sign of impending death.
She was stabbed in the back by her teammate, probably just to fight for the inner cores of those nine mutated beasts. How could she possibly have survived?
After she fell to the ground, she even heard that scumbag say a soft "I'm sorry."
Bah!
Li Mai cursed inwardly. Born into a post-apocalyptic world where there was no tomorrow, as a member of the superpowered guard team, she knew that one day they would die under the claws of mutated beasts, since the mutated beasts evolved much faster than their superpowers could be upgraded.
But she never imagined she would die from being betrayed by her teammate.
This teammate was a man who had confessed his feelings to her once.
"Ugh, you bastard..."
Blood was still gushing from the back of Li Mai's head. She couldn't withstand her scream and the sudden outburst of anger. Her vision went black, and she fainted again.
The people who ran outside heard Li Mai's voice and looked at each other in confusion. Could it be that Li Mai was not dead?
Some of the braver ones hid by the door and peeked inside. They saw that Li Mai seemed to move slightly before fainting again.
"It seems Li Mai isn't dead. Quick, someone go and call Doctor Meng," the person at the door said, turning around.
"I've already sent Li Dong to invite him!"
The clan chief strode in from the main gate, glanced at the people in the courtyard, and headed straight for the low-ceilinged house.
...
When Li Mai woke up again, looking at the low hut and thatched roof, her eyes gradually cleared from confusion.
She just had a dream, a dream about a girl's life.
She shares the same name as herself, Li Mai.
In her dream, Li Mai's parents died early, and she was raised by her grandparents.
From a young age, in order to put her elderly grandparents at ease, she was very sensible. In front of others, she would always pretend to be fierce so that no one would dare to bully her.
As she grew older, she became the leader of a group of children, leading them to dig for wild vegetables and herbs to sell and earn money to supplement the family income.
This afternoon, she returned from digging for medicinal herbs in the mountains. As soon as she entered the door, she saw white foam at the corner of her grandmother's mouth. After checking her breathing and confirming that her grandmother was gone, she couldn't hold on any longer and fainted.
The dream ended there, and Li Mai felt a headache coming on. She raised her hand and touched the back of her head, only to find that she was bound with a white cloth.
So, this really wasn't me; I had transmigrated and been reborn into someone else's body.
"Li Mai, you're finally awake! I'm so glad you're alright. Get up quickly, someone's here with a bridal sedan chair to take you to your wedding. Go see what's going on." A woman in a gray cloth dress pushed open the door and came in. Seeing that she was awake, she said anxiously.
Li Mai frowned as she looked at the woman. In the original owner's memories, this woman should have been called Aunt Chun.
"Auntie, what's wrong with me?" she asked, only to realize that her throat was terribly dry and hoarse.
"Oh, poor child, your milk is gone. When you came back and saw it, you were so frightened that you fainted. Unfortunately, you hit your head on a wooden block and broke the back of your head, bleeding a lot. It was only when Doctor Meng came that he stopped the bleeding and bandaged your wound."
