Then Teacher Nie stared at Li Xin, "Li, could you...?"
"No, ah... no, teacher, I recently had an upset stomach, and I'm really weak, this... this..." Li Xin looked troubled. It wasn't that he didn't want to take the blame, but his own health wasn't very good, so... next one!
There was no other way, so they asked another tall boy to carry Shumali on his back. "Fang Hang, could you please help me take Shumali to the school clinic?"
Fang Hang remained silent for a while, but with the help of his classmates and teachers, he carried her to the school clinic.
He dropped the person off and left without a second thought. Other matters were none of his concern, especially since the monthly exams were coming up in the first month, and time was precious.
In Class One, the boys are all focused on grades. They are good at studying and enjoy crushing their rivals. They have no time to pay attention to anything else. Class One is full of straight men.
So when the beautiful Shumali fell ill, no one volunteered to help her; everyone was afraid of the trouble! And their thought processes were all very different, like... Li Xin.
Shumali was lying in bed when Dr. Wu touched her head and found it was a little hot. He took her temperature, which was 39 degrees Celsius, indicating a fever.
So she put an IV drip on her and went out to air the sheets, timing it so she could come back and change the IV drip for Shumali.
A vast, boundless frozen lake stretched as far as the eye could see, and from within the lake, a figure kept waving at her, faintly calling her name.
“Mary, Mary, Mary, come in quickly, we’ve all been waiting for you… Mary.”
The icy lake water cleared her mind, and she sat up abruptly. She then saw white walls and a white ceiling, and the air was filled with the smell of disinfectant.
"Where...where is this?" Her memory seemed somewhat confused.
Dr. Wu happened to come in and saw her sitting up. With concern on her face, she asked, "How are you? Does your head still hurt? Is anything else bothering you?" She walked over to Shumali, touched her head, and then got up and went into the room to change her IV drip.
Shumali stared blankly at the IV drip that had just started to return to its original position. She was at school.
After the IV drip was changed, Shumali lay in bed. The icy cold feeling on her body was gone, but the dream, the frozen lake, and the indistinct village filled her with sorrow, curiosity, and fear.
She couldn't remember where she was. She was adopted when she was seven and came to Jiangcheng with her adoptive parents. She had no memory of anything before the age of seven.
Gradually, she fell asleep again, but this time, she entered the village once more.
Everywhere there were mud houses and a few dilapidated old wooden houses.
She walked step by step closer to the old wooden house, as if a voice inside her was telling her to push open the door, and she did just that.
"Squeak..."
The wooden board was pushed aside, and a musty smell wafted out, along with a foul odor. The room was very dark, and she couldn't see anything inside.
In her dream, it was always night. She heard footsteps behind her, and somehow she ran quickly into the wooden house and hid in a place.
"Hiccup... Damn it, my luck is terrible today." A drunken man staggered in through the door.
He swayed unsteadily, still holding a bottle of wine in his hand. Shumali remained silent, and the atmosphere in the dimly lit room was tense. Then, a door deep inside the house opened.
A fifteen-year-old girl came out of the room, and in the dim moonlight, Shumali could vaguely see her outline.
She wore tattered clothes and no shoes. Her long hair was casually draped over her shoulders, and she was holding the hand of a five-year-old child who was so thin that it was impossible to tell whether he was a boy or a girl.
As soon as she came out, the dazed man pounced on her, cursing, "You good-for-nothing, you slut, you... hiccup... your mother is a slut, and so are you, run away? Why aren't you running anymore?"
The man rushed up and grabbed her by the neck. Shumali's heart pounded violently. She tried to break free and push the man away, but she couldn't move her body.
"What's going on? Why can't I move?" Her words seemed to have no effect on the people in the old wooden house.
"Dad, I...cough cough...I won't run anymore...you...you let me go." The girl kicked his leg, the man's eyes were bloodshot, and a strange smile appeared on his lips.
"Since your slutty mother ran off with some other man, then you can take her place, hahaha...hehe...you can take her place."
The man suddenly tore her clothes to shreds, a greedy and lewd smile on his face.
"No... Father... No... I am your daughter!..."
Looking at the somewhat frenzied man, who seemed to have lost his mind, he grabbed the girl and started kissing her haphazardly.
"Little Grass... Waaah... Cough cough... Little Grass, go out, don't come in, go out, no matter what happens, don't come in, come back in when it's light."
The girl screamed at the child to get out, her eyes filled with tears, but her gaze towards the child was gentle.
As soon as the child went out, the house echoed with the man's angry roar, filthy insults, and her sister's pitiful cries.
A door seemed to separate them from another world. The child sat in the yard, gazing at the stars in the sky, her eyes filled with confusion and despair.
"No...don't...let her go, don't touch her...let her go..." Shumali rushed over suddenly, then pushed the man away and hugged the girl in her arms.
He held her tightly in his arms. "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, I will protect you, don't be afraid." She looked down and saw that what she was holding was not a person, but a skeleton crawling with insects.
