Chapter 86 Fungal Remains Frenzy 47 Trap.
Nanmen Jue closed the letter.
Jiang Li kept looking at her, but she ignored him until she finished reading and then looked up at him with a somewhat subtle gaze.
Jiang Li was puzzled by the look she was getting, but she remained unmoved. "You suspect I secretly read your letters?"
“I believe in the people my sister believes in.” Nanmen Jue shook his head, amused by her speculation. “Besides, what’s the harm in seeing it? My sister didn’t ask me to seize power, so what’s there to be afraid of?”
She was just curious about the friends her sister had acknowledged. It seems her sister has a very unique eye; all three people she's met are quite interesting.
Jiang Li pursed his lips, a slight smile appearing on his serious face.
Nanmen Jue withdrew his gaze, stood up, and said, "I've got the letter and my identity has been confirmed. Can I leave now? Where is my unfortunate friend being held?"
"Are you leaving already?" Jiang Li asked.
Nanmen Jue paused slightly, then looked over with a smile, "What, is it a rainy day to keep guests? It's not raining today."
Jiang Li leaned back in her chair, the smile on her face gone. She looked at Nanmen Jue scrutinizingly, and the atmosphere became quiet.
Nanmen Jue's expression remained unchanged, only the corners of his lips slightly raised.
After waiting for so long, they're finally going to make their move.
Jiang Li spoke first, "I don't understand. The quarantine facility is now much stronger and more secure than it was three years ago. Why are neither of you, brother and sister, willing to stay here?"
“Just like my sister said, you have such a big place here, with so many talented people, why do you care about whether the two of us stay or leave?” Nanmen Jue said.
“I’m just curious about your choices,” Jiang Li said. “In this apocalypse, everyone just wants peace and stability. Is there any place more secure or trustworthy than here?”
"No," Nanmen Jue admitted.
"Then why don't you want to stay?" Jiang Li asked persistently.
Looking at her sharp face, Nanmen Jue's eyes revealed a strange light. "You are a very ambitious person, and also a responsible person, but you are too obsessed, so you are easily taken advantage of."
Jiang Li's expression changed. "What did you say?"
Nanmen Jue smiled gently, the tip of the white bone knife peeking out from between his fingers.
“Come out, those guys who have been hiding behind the secret door, and the sniper you were prepared at one o’clock. Is there an entire company outside? I’m really embarrassed that you’ve made such a fuss just for me.”
Jiang Li stood up in shock, “How could you…!”
It turns out that Nanmen Jue knew everything all along, but she stubbornly refused to say anything and just sat there!
What are you sitting there for? Are you watching what she's going to do?
Jiang Li suddenly felt a sense of fear towards this young woman. Looking at her overly beautiful face, she felt as if she had stepped into a black hole... She couldn't figure out what she was thinking.
"Do I need to say it a second time?" Nanmen Jue was still smiling, but his eyes had turned cold.
Because of the affection left by her sister, she didn't want to ruin this relationship, but Jiang Li ultimately chose to take action anyway.
However, it's not Jiang Li's fault; she knew that she couldn't refuse the conditions offered by the other party.
Jiang Li fell silent. Behind her, what appeared to be just a smooth wall slowly slid open, and two people walked out, a man and a woman, with purple and blue names on their heads respectively.
The man with the purple name was named Shi Nan, and the woman with the blue name was named Wang Ying. The two of them first stared at the red name above Nanmen Jue's head to confirm, and then they both showed confident smiles.
“Mayor Jiang, I’ve said it before, Nanmen Jue can’t be judged by common sense,” Shi Nan said. “He will find your arrangements not surprising at all.”
Jiang Li glanced at Nanmen Jue and then at them, his face darkening.
"My dear, you're so insightful." Wang Ying pressed close to Shi Nan's body and said in a deliberately high-pitched voice, her face beaming with a smile, but her eyes darted around, clearly showing her nervousness. It was unclear whether this nervousness was directed at Nanmen Jue or at the man beside her.
She clung to him too tightly, and the man impatiently shook his arm, looking at Nanmen Jue with a mixture of nervousness and excitement. Clearly, this was the purpose of his hiding his true intentions.
Upon seeing Nanmen Jue's face, both of them showed obvious surprise, clearly not expecting that the infamous Nanmen Jue would have such a face. Then they revealed a malicious smile.
"Nanmen Jue, I didn't expect you to actually deliver yourself to our doorstep. We're lucky to have gotten this for ourselves."
Despite being surrounded both openly and covertly, Nanmen Jue remained unchanged. Even though she knew Jiang Li had betrayed her, she showed no anger or anything like that, appearing frighteningly calm.
She even sighed softly and said, "Did Cheng Xiuye tell you?"
She recognized the man. Jin Jian had mentioned that Cheng Xiuye had contacted Shi Nan, the number one person under the Orange Name. It seems that this thorn in their side has been planted here.
If she still can't figure out what's going on now, she's a fool. Because of her relationship with her sister, Jiang Li would never have personally confronted Nanmen Jue, but unfortunately, Nanmen Jue has a reason that forces her to take action.
It is probably common knowledge now that Zhang Zhi is by Nanmen Jue's side and is being personally mentored by her.
Jiang Li was unaware of the love and hatred among the reincarnators, but she knew that Zhang Zhi could command the Mother Tree. Based on this alone, she would never let Nanmen Jue go.
As for the two reincarnators, they were mostly after her personally. I don't know what they did to sow discord between Jiang Li, but they probably hit it off immediately.
"It was Mr. Cheng Xiuye who deliberately released this information. We've been hiding here, so naturally we heard about it," Shi Nan said arrogantly.
Jiang Li remained silent, clearly indicating that they had invoked Cheng Xiuye's name to persuade him to cooperate with them.
In this world, Cheng Xiuye is the police chief who is most trusted by Jiang Li in the quarantine facility.
The choice between the younger brother of a friend who has long been missing and a sheriff in charge of military forces is self-evident.
Nanmen Jue chuckled softly.
"What are you laughing at?" Shi Nan and Wang Ying tensed up immediately. These natives didn't know Nanmen Jue, but they knew how terrifying he was. The sense of security in the empty office seemed to drop suddenly. Shi Nan shouted nervously at Jiang Li, "Where are the soldiers you prepared? Let them in right now!"
Jiang Li frowned, looking at the two with displeasure and anger, and said in a deep voice, "We are just business partners. Even Cheng Xiuye wouldn't dare to yell at me. Show me some respect."
"You idiot..." Seeing them fighting amongst themselves, Nanmen Jue revealed an interested look, which made Shi Nan's face turn extremely ugly. "Don't you understand what I'm saying? It's dangerous for just the few of us to be here. Dealing with Nanmen Jue requires heavy firepower!"
Jiang Li looked at them coldly but did not give any orders. "He didn't resist. Just find out where that girl is."
Shi Nan was furious, "You..."
“If you say another word, I’ll call the soldiers in and arrest you both,” Jiang Li said.
Shi Nan suddenly looked as if he had been choked, his face turning blue. It must have been more painful for him to suffer a humiliation at the hands of an indigenous person than for Nanmen Jue to beat him up.
Even someone as powerful as Jin Mingdu would be afraid of such heavy weapons, let alone the two of them. Wang Ying also showed a look of fear and quietly tugged at Shi Nan's arm.
Shi Nan fell silent in humiliation, then forcefully shoved Wang Ying away.
Nanmen Jue watched a good show from the sidelines. She should have been the main character in this show, but she ended up being the audience member instead.
Seeing that she remained completely calm, only looking at them with an amused expression, Jiang Li remained silent for a moment before saying, "I'm sorry, what you possess is too important, I have no choice but to do this."
“Thing?” Nanmen Jue repeated softly, “It’s a seven-year-old girl, one of your survivors. If she knocks on the door of the quarantine facility, you, as the government, should accept her as a citizen.”
“You know it’s not that simple, so why did you take her away?” Jiang Li pinched the deep furrow between his eyebrows. “Where did you hide her? As long as you hand her over, I’ll let you go. I never intended to hurt you.”
Upon hearing this, Shi Nan's face turned even uglier, but he stubbornly remained silent. Nanmen Jue guessed that in order to avoid arousing Jiang Li's suspicion, he had not mentioned their intention to kill Nanmen Jue during the transaction, but only emphasized Zhang Zhi's importance.
Nanmen Jue glanced at him, then looked at Jiang Li, "What do you plan to do if I don't hand it over?"
"Why?" Jiang Li seemed to always ask Nanmen Jue this question. She didn't understand either of the siblings. "Do you know what her appearance means? A person who can control the mother tree, if nurtured, may one day be able to control the spore mother! Conversely, she may also be assimilated by the spore mother and become a formidable enemy of mankind. No matter how you look at it, handing her over to the isolation ward is the safest option."
She still remembered her friendship with Nanmen Yu, and only wanted to persuade Nanmen Jue, but Nanmen Jue found her words utterly ridiculous.
"The safest option, safe for whom? It certainly won't be safe for Zhang Zhi." Nanmen Jue said with a smile. "I don't know anything, but I promised that child's father that I wouldn't let her enter any human base. Jiang Li, you think your sister isn't the kind of person who would go back on her word? As her brother, I naturally won't go back on my word either."
The blatant rejection made Jiang Li's face turn ugly, but Shi Nan's face flashed with excitement.
Clearly, he was the one most pleased to see Nanmen Jue and Jiang Li fall out, and he was eager for Jiang Li to send troops in and arrest Nanmen Jue as soon as possible.
“I don’t understand you.” Jiang Li was silent for a long time before saying, “From any perspective, you shouldn’t have a reason to refuse. Which should you choose: a promise to one person or a responsibility to all of humanity?”
Nanmen Jue shook her head, not responding to the philosophical question. Her gaze shifted to Shi Nan's face, which was filled with anticipation and excitement.
She smiled, but Shi Nan froze instantly. He stared at Nanmen Jue's ambiguous smile, a bead of cold sweat trickling down his forehead.
“You two shouldn’t be so indifferent to Zhang Zhi yet. If you don’t care whether she goes to the quarantine center or not,” Nanmen Jue concluded with certainty, “you are members of the new alliance.”
"What?" Jiang Li was clearly unaware of this, and his expression changed drastically.
“My sister specifically told me not to associate with the people from the new alliance,” Nanmen Jue said with a smile, shaking the letter in his hand with a rustling sound.
