Chapter 87 Fungal Remains Frenzy 48 "Get lost, don't get my sister dirty..."
The unexpected news shocked Jiang Li. As the person in charge of the quarantine facility, no one knew better than her what the New Alliance was. She had been on high alert, not wanting those human traitors to come in and spread the idea that the Spore Mother was so great. But unexpectedly, she herself had let them in.
Gao Yongze instantly understood Nanmen Jue's intention: previously, they had allied with Jiang Li to deal with Nanmen Jue, but Nanmen Jue's words directly pulled Jiang Li to her side!
Previously, it seemed that Jiang Li didn't intend to kill Nanmen Jue. She had no hostility towards Nanmen Jue; she just wanted to find out about Zhang Zhi. Now that they had a common enemy, how could Jiang Li possibly stand on their side to deal with her?
Noticing Jiang Li's unfriendly gaze, Gao Yong gritted his teeth, feeling a deep sense of apprehension towards the smiling young man.
This kind of apprehension is different from when I heard about her fearsome reputation for slaughtering her companions in the main hall of the gods. It was just a confrontation; she did nothing but turn the tide with a few words. Such methods and responsiveness are enough to make anyone wary.
But Gao Yong was still a purple-named official, so he pretended to be calm and said, "What are you talking about? How can you just accuse someone like that? We are not from the New Alliance. We work for Chief Inspector Cheng Xiuye. He can vouch for us."
If he had said this immediately before, Jiang Li might have hesitated. But he reacted too late. He was startled by Nanmen Jue's sudden exposure and by Nanmen Jue's reputation. He missed the best time to explain. In addition, Wang Ying, who was beside him, was trembling with fear after being exposed. If Jiang Li could still be fooled, he wouldn't be in charge.
"You're lying to me." Jiang Li's face was extremely pale, and his voice was icy cold. "Then what about Cheng Xiuye? Did he betray the quarantine facility too?"
In her mind, cooperating with the new allies would be a betrayal of the quarantine facility, so her anger flared up quickly. Before Shi Nan could react, she slammed her hand on a button on the table and shouted, "Come in!"
With a whoosh, heavily armed soldiers poured into the spacious office, making the air suddenly thin and filled with the smell of gunpowder. Outside, snipers were also ready, their infrared beams steadily aimed at Nanmen Jue, Shi Nan, and Wang Ying.
Wang Ying screamed and hid behind Shi Nan. Shi Nan's face was extremely ugly. The thought of messing up what Cheng Xiuye would do to him made him feel a hint of fear in his eyes, which gradually turned red. He stared intently at Nanmen Jue. If he wanted to live a good life in the future, then Nanmen Jue had to die today!
He roared and, in the next second of the hail of bullets, grabbed the woman behind him and pulled her in front of him. Without hesitation, he used his lover, with whom he had been whispering sweet nothings the day before, to block the first wave of attacks. Taking this opportunity, he sprang up on the spot, stepping over several heads in succession. Ignoring the remaining bullets hitting his body, he charged straight at Nanmen Jue!
"Kill him!"
The somber and sharp command came from Mayor Jiang Li. She was shocked by the fighting prowess Shi Nan displayed, but even more so by his actions. The command was given without hesitation, and countless machine guns fired simultaneously. This time, Shi Nan had no shield, and the bullets instantly turned him into dice.
Nanmen Jue noticed that he was wearing protective gear, but unlike her, he had upgraded all his clothing. Even she still had some areas where she was not fully protected, let alone him. The bullets hit his flesh and blood, and when he came to Nanmen Jue, he had become a bloody mess.
The bloodied man disregarded his injuries and threw a punch at Nanmen Jue's chest. This punch was made with all his strength, and he poured all his hopes into this fist. Just as it was about to hit Nanmen Jue's chest, Shi Nan's eyes revealed anticipation and ecstasy.
Once Nanmen Jue dies, his fate will change forever. He will receive rewards from the main god and the three major guilds. He might even join the Ouroboros and become the third most important figure after Cheng Xiuye...
As he was lost in his beautiful daydream, Nanmen Jue looked up at him.
Something flashed through Shi Nan's mind quickly. His brain, which had been overheated by pain and excitement, cooled down for a moment. Was something wrong? Right, there was no fear of impending death in Nanmen Jue's eyes, only disdain and mockery.
With a soft thud, the sound of flesh being pierced did not come from Nanmen Jue's chest.
Everyone stopped their attack in shock, staring wide-eyed at the bloody scene before them.
Shi Nan slowly lowered his head, and a not-so-thick arm passed through his chest. He could even hear the sound of his heart breaking.
"you……"
He opened his mouth to speak, but endless blood gushed out. Nanmen Jue pulled his body back in disgust and casually withdrew his arm.
"Get lost, don't ruin my sister's letter."
There is still a huge gap between the number one under the orange name and the number one under the gold name. In just one exchange, Shi Nan was like a kite with its string cut, falling headfirst to the ground.
Perhaps he never understood why he died so easily; he died with his eyes wide open in disbelief.
The person she was meant to kill was already dead. Nanmen Jue stood before him, a gentle smile on her face. She looked down at the person she had just killed with her own hands, her eyes filled with pity.
The office fell silent for a moment. Jiang Li, who was being protected behind the soldiers, pushed them aside and stepped forward. He looked at the dead body on the ground and then at Nanmen Jue, his lips trembling slightly.
Her feelings were probably extremely complicated, but Nanmen Jue spoke first.
"I believe you don't know about this."
Jiang Li's cold expression softened slightly, and she lowered her head slightly. "I'm sorry, I didn't think this through. When I heard they were Cheng Xiuye's men, I lowered my guard and didn't investigate them thoroughly."
Nanmen Jue shook his head; the identities of reincarnators were not so easy to ascertain.
"Are you still shooting at me now?" She pointed to the sniper spot that was still firmly planted on her chest.
A hint of embarrassment appeared on Jiang Li's face. She waved her hand, and the soldiers withdrew in an orderly manner. However, before leaving, they couldn't help but look at Nanmen Jue with strange eyes. That heart-piercing hand had left a deep impression on everyone, and they probably would never forget it for the rest of their lives.
Nanmen Jue wiped his hands with a tissue. After the soldiers left, only Jiang Li and the messy office remained. They only had time to take the bodies away and didn't have time to clean up.
The two remained silent, both knowing full well that while their common enemy had been dealt with, the issues between them remained unresolved.
“Tell me, where is Zhang Zhi?” Jiang Li said. “I know what you’re insisting on. Believe me, I won’t treat her as a mere tool or research subject.”
Her face no longer showed any toughness, but rather a hint of exhaustion. Clearly, supporting the largest human survivor base during such a difficult time had taken a toll on her both physically and mentally.
Nanmen Jue sighed, "I really did promise her father."
Jiang Li looked at her with a puzzled expression. "Is this question really that important right now?"
“It’s very important to me,” Nanmen Jue said. “If you want to continue to coerce me by force, then go ahead. Even if you kill me, Zhang Zhi won’t be here.”
Jiang Li stared at her silently, his aura heavy and stern. Nanmen Jue remained motionless, carefully wiping the blood off his hands, and said, "If there's nothing else, return my men. I should be going."
"Nanmen Jue," Jiang Li called out to her, then fell silent again, his heart filled with mixed emotions.
Nanmen Jue looked at her with an expression that was almost one of acceptance.
Jiang Li's eyes flickered, revealing a fierce internal struggle within her. Nanmen Jue waited patiently, as if he hadn't seen the light still pointing at her heart.
Jiang Li struggled for a while, then avoided Nanmen Jue's gaze and walked alone to the large French window. The setting sun cast a long shadow behind her, making her look so lonely.
Nanmen Jue stared at her, and suddenly saw her shoulders slump, knowing that her inner struggle was over.
Jiang Li turned around in front of the French windows, her face once again displaying the demeanor of a mayor—firm and composed, exuding an almost chilling coldness, the setting sun casting a blood-red glow over her entire body.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I admire your commitment to your promise. As a human being, I don’t want that seven-year-old girl to face such a fate either. But I’m not alone. There are millions of people behind me. If there’s a consequence for doing this, let it fall on me.”
She decided to find Zhang Zhi at all costs, even if it meant hurting her friend's only family member.
Nanmen Jue did not show any anger or disappointment, but simply nodded and said, "I understand."
"I don't want to hurt you," Jiang Li said.
Nanmen Jue nodded again, "I know."
Jiang Li stared at her for a long time, seemingly finally shedding the shadow of Nanmen Yu's perception of her, and beginning to truly look at Nanmen Jue as a person.
Suddenly, a resolute and cold glint appeared in her eyes, and she was about to speak.
Nanmen Jue was also preparing at the same time. She kept sketching out an escape route in her mind. Jiang Li had indeed laid a trap outside this office. If she tried to break through the front door, even she wouldn't have been able to get out. The firepower that swept in instantly would destroy the durability of the coat she had just put on. In that situation, there would be no time to change into another coat. She would be shot into mincemeat.
But this is the top floor, and the floor-to-ceiling window behind Jiang Li is large and beautiful, while outside it is a vast emptiness!
Even with snipers present, Jiang Li never expected her to be so extraordinary as to dare to jump from the thirtieth floor. The snipers' firepower was negligible to her.
If Jiang Li were to order an encirclement right now, she could easily break through this floor-to-ceiling window. Even if everyone in the base came to capture her, she was confident she could escape.
However, in that case, they probably wouldn't be able to take care of Jin Jian. But Nanmen Jue wasn't too worried. Jiang Li's goal was just to find out Zhang Zhi's whereabouts, and he wouldn't kill anyone indiscriminately.
Seeing the resolute look on Jiang Li's face, Nanmen Jue's gaze sharpened. Just as she was about to smash the French windows and escape, a piercing alarm sounded from Jiang Li's body.
Jiang Li's expression changed, and she closed her mouth again. She quickly pulled out a communicator that was screaming incessantly, "What happened?"
At this distance, nothing could escape Nanmen Jue's ears; he heard the rapid-fire report coming from the other end.
A large number of parasites have been detected approaching from the north gate. Based on the energy fluctuations, there may even be Class A parasites!
