Chapter 27 You're the prettiest

"No other way?"

How many women in the village have lost their husbands, and they're still living just fine?

Do you think everyone is like you, abandoning their children and remarrying before their husbands are even seven years old?

"You just..." Gu Yanliu instinctively wanted to blurt out the words as she thought of the women in the village gossiping about her behind her back.

But after thinking about it, he swallowed it back, only shouting in a hoarse voice,

"Go away, and don't come back again. We don't need you anymore!"

"Yanliu, I...I'm leaving."

"These are the shoes I made for you. Take them and wear them." The woman, her eyes red and swollen, handed the bundle in her hand to Gu Yanliu.

"We have shoes to wear, we don't need your things."

Gu Yanliu threw the bundle in her hand outside the door and slammed the door shut.

She leaned against the door, biting her lip, sobbing silently.

Su Nianxue walked over and gently patted her shoulder, "It's alright, don't cry anymore."

She suddenly threw herself into Su Nianxue's arms and burst into tears.

After she had cried enough, she shyly lifted her head from Su Nianxue's embrace.

"Sister-in-law, I've soaked your clothes. Take them off and I'll wash them for you."

"It's nothing, it'll dry in a bit," Su Nianxue said nonchalantly, looking at the two wet patches on her chest.

"By the way, where's your brother?"

"Hmm, it seems like she rode off on her bicycle. I guess she went to town again?" Gu Yanliu had cried for a while, and her mood had improved a lot.

Looking at her slightly red and swollen eyes, Su Nianxue sighed inwardly.

Every family has its own troubles!

When they opened the door again, Wang Peilan was gone; only the bundle remained on the door.

"Yanliu, what do you think...? Should we just listen to them and see how they handle this?"

Gu Yanliu didn't know what to do. She originally wanted to throw it away, but the hardships she had endured since childhood prevented her from saying those words.

"Leave it for now, your brother can deal with it when he gets back." She carried the package under the eaves.

"good."

When Gu Yanbai returned at night, Su Nianxue was sitting on the bed, staring straight at him.

A surge of warmth welled up inside him, and he strode to the bedside, teasingly asking, "What's wrong? Do you think your man is exceptionally handsome?"

"Yes, you're the prettiest." Su Nianxue silently pursed her lips. How come she hadn't noticed this narcissistic side of him before?

He cupped her face in his hands and quickly pecked her lips. "Talk like this from now on, I like it."

Su Nianxue wiped her mouth vigorously. "It stinks! You've been drinking again."

"There's no other way, friends are coming over, I have to entertain them." He said as he prepared to take off his shoes and get into bed.

Seeing that she was still staring at him, he paused in taking off his clothes. "If you have something to say, just say it. Why are you staring at me like that?"

Even if you think I'm good-looking, you don't have to stare at me like that!

Although he enjoyed that look in his eyes, there was always something strange about it.

He was afraid that her next sentence would be another insult to him.

"Gu Yanbai, you still have a mother, don't you?"

"I don't have a mother, I was born from a crack in a rock, okay?"

"What nonsense are you spouting?" Gu Yanbai retorted instinctively.

Su Nianxue knew he must have misunderstood, so she added, "I said your own mother came to our door this afternoon."

This guy is really something, he didn't even hear clearly before he got impatient.

Gu Yanbai was taken aback. "Oh, you were staring at me like that just to talk about this?"

"What else?" Su Nianxue rolled her eyes, rolled into the blanket, and didn't want to talk to him at all.

"What did she say when she came?" Gu Yanbai sat on the edge of the bed, turned her body over so that she was facing him.

This girl gives him the cold shoulder whenever she's unhappy; her temper is even worse than his.

"Oh, she said she came to see you and brought you a bag of shoes."

Do you want to wear it?

"If you want it, I'll go get it for you." She looked into his eyes and said softly.

"What are you going to wear?"

"It's not like I don't have shoes to wear, why would I wear someone else's?" he said nonchalantly.

"Alright, you can take care of the shoes under the eaves!"

"By the way, Gu Yanbai, where did your mother remarry and go?" It's unexpected that their fates are so similar.

One mother passed away, and the other mother remarried.

If one father is gone, it's as if the other father is gone too.

She remarried to an old widower in town.

That woman already had three children, and after she married him, she had another one. Her life was destined to be spent caring for four children.

Gu Yanbai remained calm; were it not for the hint of sarcasm in his tone, one would almost think he was talking about someone else's business.

"Actually, life is quite difficult for women without men."

It's not impossible for her to remarry. She hesitated for a moment before speaking her mind.

It's not uncommon for many villagers to remarry.

She had intended to comfort Gu Yanliu that afternoon, but seeing how heartbroken she was, she ultimately didn't say anything.

“We never stopped her from remarrying, and Grandpa never stopped her either.”

“But…” he paused, “she’s in such a hurry. My father hasn’t even had his seven-day mourning period yet, and she’s already rushing to get married.”

At that time, Yanliu was still breastfeeding when she abandoned her.

We fed her little by little, using rice water and cooking oil.

Su Nianxue paused for a moment. That was indeed too heartless; no wonder they hated her.

Seeing how pitiful she looked today, she assumed she had some unspeakable trouble!
