Chapter 51 House Viewing

Upon arriving at the location, there were neighbors on both sides, but they were all more than ten meters apart. The yards were all fenced off with only a wooden gate. It was also quite a distance from the river, so it was safe for children to stay.

As Yu Qianhe said, the courtyard here is not large, only twelve or thirteen square meters, but the house is quite big.

"This is it, Courtyard No. 4. Although the number isn't very auspicious, it's the only one for sale, and there aren't any other suitable houses right now. Let's take a look first," Yu Qianhe explained to Liu Yun as he parked his bicycle in front of Courtyard No. 4.

"Aunt Zhang, have you had breakfast yet?"

"Hey! You've eaten, old man. Xiaoyu's here. Stop listening to that radio. Xiaoyu, come in quickly. This must be your wife! She's so beautiful." Aunt Zhang hurriedly opened the fence gate.

"Hello, Aunt Zhang." Liu Yun also greeted Yu Qian and the person behind her obediently.

Yu Qianhe didn't stand on ceremony when he entered. "Aunt Zhang, I brought my wife to see the house this time. You haven't sold it yet, have you? If she likes it, we'll just buy it."

"Okay, it's not for sale. We've kept it for you since you came to see it the day before yesterday! The house isn't that big, so come and take a look. I won't stand on ceremony with you. If you want it, you can also take a look at these pieces of furniture. Keep what you like. We're just selling the rest anyway, so we're not planning to take them with us." Aunt Zhang was quite the smooth talker.

The house wasn't very big, about the same size as the Yu family's courtyard, but it was enough for their family. The entrance was the main hall, which also served as the dining room. To the right was a room, and a little further in was another room. The same was true for the left side. It was all in the style of a small courtyard in the southern countryside, which is how most households are. There was also a small attic upstairs where some firewood and other small items were stored.

The main room served as both the kitchen and stairwell. The kitchen had a wood-burning stove, and the walls were blackened from burning firewood, but Liu Yun liked it because she could make cured meat there. Behind the kitchen was the toilet, and the two bedrooms behind it had back doors for easy access to the toilet.

To Liu Yun's surprise, this toilet was different from the dry toilet in the courtyard. The dry toilet in the courtyard had a large latrine underneath, while this one was flushed with water. It must have been disposed of collectively here. This was truly an unexpected surprise.

After seeing the house, Liu Yun decided to buy it. To be honest, there wasn't much furniture that she wanted. After all, barring any unforeseen circumstances, this would be their home, and they would live here for at least ten years. So, she decided to replace the furniture with things she liked. The furniture in the tenement could be used for the triplets' rooms or as guest rooms.

However, they could buy the pots and knives if they were selling them, and the cabinet was quite new, so they could keep it. After telling Yu Qianhe about his idea, Yu Qianhe agreed.

Seeing that the two had seen enough, Aunt Zhang also introduced the parts that couldn't be seen, "Little Xiao's wife, my house was built less than eight years ago. The tiles and everything were replaced just two years ago. There is running water in the yard and kitchen, which makes cooking and washing clothes very convenient. Also, you can take a shower and use the toilet at home. There are drainage pipes underground, so it's easy to clean with water without having to go out and suffer."

"It really is quite nice, Aunt Zhang. I'm not exaggerating, I really like it. How much are you looking for?"

After some bargaining and some fine-tuning, I finally bought the courtyard for 860 yuan, along with the pot, pan, and shovel.

After confirming everything, the group paid the money to transfer the property. In those days, houses couldn't be bought and sold privately; they were allocated by the state. In the city, those with work units were allocated housing by their employers, while those without either lived with their families in cramped conditions or rented rooms elsewhere.

When the four arrived at the office, they gave the same story: the two were her nephew and niece-in-law, and the couple were going to the south to join the army. Since their nephew's house was too full, they gave it to him.

What hadn't the people at the office seen? But they hadn't violated any policies on the surface. Grandpa Zhang secretly handed them two packs of cigarettes. The two were military dependents, and the house certificate was eventually issued.

Looking at her and Yu Qianhe's names on the property deed, Liu Yun felt a strange sense of belonging. Was this the inexplicable attachment that the people of Huaguo have to land and houses?

"We'll take care of everything inside as soon as possible and clear out the house for you," Aunt Zhang said with a smile. After all, once the house was cleared out, she could go to her son's place. He was her only son, and she would soon be able to hold her grandson.

"No rush, you can clean it up at your own pace."

Liu Yun was in an exceptionally good mood after resolving a major issue.

Back home, I excitedly started planning the house. My top priority was to empty the house completely while I was there, pave the ground with cement, and also build a cement path in the yard. Maybe I knew I was going to move soon, because although the yard was flat, it wasn't even covered in grass; it was still dirt. Whenever it rained, the yard and the house would be covered in mud.

She plans to tidy up the yard and plant some vegetables, scallions, and garlic, but that's still undecided because this isn't a space where fertilization is necessary. She can't accept using traditional compost in the yard since there's no fertilizer available.

You can also dig a small pit in the yard, fill it with sand, and make a sandpit for the triplets to play in. It doesn't need to be too big, just leave some space. The kids will definitely love playing in the sand.

Whether or not to plant vegetables is another matter, but flowers must be planted. We can't let anyone find a reason to attack us, so the selection of flowers is very limited. Let's start by planting a few honeysuckle and wild chrysanthemums. Fruit trees also need to be planted. Jujube trees, bayberry trees, pomegranate trees, pear trees, plum trees, and apple trees can be planted around the yard.

The fence also needs to be torn down and repaired properly, and then trees should be planted against the camphor fence.

We need to make another eight-immortal table and four benches for the main room. The one we have now is fine for the living room. We'll use the outer table on the left as the living room area, and we still need a coffee table. We'll place two single bamboo beds against the wall; these can be used as benches, sofas, or even beds when there are more people. They're also great for afternoon naps in the summer. It's not far from the river, so we don't need a fan if we just open the windows. We'll also buy a few more chairs to match; the benches will be in the main room, and the living room will be filled with chairs.
