They hadn't gone far out of the village when the oxcart chugged up behind them. Judging by the time, it must have set off after Tiger went back. The old ox was panting a little, and it stopped beside them.
"Come on, come on, how long will it take to get there on foot?"
Cheng Chao and Jian Wenxiu immediately looked at Jian Dan. Jian Dan was stunned for a moment, then quickly moved closer.
"Third Master, what brings you here?"
In fact, with Cheng Chao and his companion's leg strength, this ten or twenty miles was nothing, not even comparable to the intensity of a long march.
For simplicity, it's not too heavy, especially considering there's a child in the family.
The old lady was thoughtful; she had laid out a tattered quilt and prepared a cotton blanket in the car, as the wind was strong at the moment. She was worried that the child would catch a cold. Cheng Chao and Jian Wenxiu saw this but did not say anything.
"It'll get cold soon after dark, kids, don't get cold. Hurry up, you can't find that old man's house anyway, I'll take you there directly so you don't waste time asking around."
Jian Dan nodded immediately and turned around to signal the two of them to get in the car.
Jian Wenxiu felt that the oxcart was not as fast as his own, but what the old man said made sense. The sun had already set and it was getting a bit windy. They were not wearing thick clothes. It didn't matter to them, but the child really couldn't get cold, so the cotton quilt was very necessary.
Thinking it over, he thanked them, took a long stride, and got on the oxcart. He didn't put the child down, but instead used a quilt to shield the child from the crowd, hiding him completely so that not a breath of wind could get in.
Simple had already put thermal underwear on herself and her child early on. She wasn't too worried about it and sat in her usual spot, chatting casually with the old man.
The oxcart wasn't moving very fast, and Jixiang and the others followed behind it, bouncing along. They thought they were out for some fresh air and were very excited.
Liujiatun wasn't far, but it wasn't close either. Today, the old ox was working hard, panting heavily, which made Uncle Liu feel sorry for it. He couldn't be gentle anymore and pointed to the yard in front of him...
"This is the one, hurry up, hurry up."
He hurried along, and upon entering the courtyard, he called out rudely.
"Old Liu, hurry up and send someone over."
I arrived at a pretty good time; I was home.
Liu Dazhen didn't come out, but Liu Gang pushed the door open and came out first. He recognized Liu Sanye from several visits and quickly went inside to greet him.
The old man waved his hand.
"I won't go in. Let Old Liu take a good look at this child. Find me a bucket and fetch some water; I need to feed the cows."
Liu Gang readily agreed, ushered the three men into the house, and then turned around to retrieve a wooden bucket from the storeroom.
"Uncle, I'll fetch you some water."
Old Master Liu was arranging medicinal herbs inside when he heard the commotion outside. Even if he didn't like seeing patients, he understood the importance of social etiquette. Besides, seeing that it was Jian Dan who had come in, he had no further objections. He put down what he was holding and led the person to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed).
"Put the child down, let me see him."
Little Jian Xin fell asleep on Jian Wenxiu's lap. She was completely sheltered on the oxcart and didn't feel a breeze. She only woke up when they were almost there. She knew that he was checking her body, so she didn't resist. She blinked her eyes and obediently let the old man check her body and massage her arms and legs.
Liu Zhen straightened up, and the three adults immediately tensed up.
"Grandpa, child, are you alright?"
Although he hadn't been there long, he had brought Jian Dan a lot of laughter. Even if their relationship wasn't very deep, he was still a roommate, and Jian Dan was worried about him.
"Don't worry, the bones are fine, it's just a superficial injury."
The three of them breathed a sigh of relief.
"The bruises on my back and arms will heal in a few days after I go back and apply some ointment and massage them in."
"There are bacteria in this wound on her hand. I need to clean it out before bandaging it. It'll hurt a bit, so please keep an eye on her."
Jian Wenxiu, who was closest, took the child into his arms without hesitation. Jian Dan also took out a piece of candy from her pocket and put it in her mouth. Cheng Chao was also teasing her. With his attention diverted, the little girl did not cry out in pain, but her small body was trembling.
"alright!"
Several people were watching expectantly, and Old Master Liu unconsciously sped up his pace. In other words, for so many years, no one had come to him to see a doctor for such a basic illness.
The little girl turned her head and looked at her hand, which had been treated with medicine and wrapped in gauze, and was completely stunned.
Liu Zhen also had a bit of a wicked sense of humor.
"Alright, don't get it wet when you get back. You can remove the gauze in three days."
Two rough-looking men, plus a simple-minded one, all frowned in unison.
After feeding the cattle, Uncle Liu followed Liu Gang in. He immediately noticed the two small, tightly bandaged hands and frowned.
"Is it that serious?"
In his mind, only serious injuries would be bandaged so carefully, and for a moment, many thoughts began to run through his mind.
Liu Zhen simply said one sentence.
"It's nothing, just a scratch. The child is small, so it heals quickly. It'll be fine in two or three days."
Oh, this?
For a moment, Liu Sanye was at a loss for words, and he looked at the three idiots with a speechless expression.
For rural children, unless it's a broken arm or leg or something life-threatening, it's nothing serious. Some families might just smear some ash on it, and it's just a thin layer of skin. If it happens during the day, the wound will basically dry up by night, and after another night, it'll be fine.
Jian Dan suddenly realized this as well, and quickly coughed twice, abruptly changing the subject.
"Well, Grandpa Liu, we're not worried about the external injuries. The main problem is that the child was thrown several meters away. He's young and can't say anything about the pain."
I'm not afraid of anything else, I'm just worried about whether I'll get a concussion or something.
Liu Gang came over to tidy up the used medicines and tools, and Liu Zhen sat down in a chair.
“I checked, it’s fine. Just keep an eye on him tonight. The child is too young, he might have nightmares. Just keep an eye on him as an adult.”
However, has this child not been eating properly for the past six months or so?
Half a year? That's a long time ago, and I don't know for sure, but considering the situation when I saw them, it's probably pretty close to the truth. They were able to drag people out and persecute them openly, so their lives before that couldn't have been easy.
After a quick thought, the girl nodded.
"Yes, yes, bad guys came and smashed things, we couldn't buy anything to eat, and someone even hit me, my dad even bled."
The child's words were illogical, but everyone understood them. Jian Wenxiu's face darkened again, and Liu Zhen guessed that something had happened, since such things were not uncommon nowadays.
He's so old, he has no interest in other people's business, but he still gave me some advice.
"It's best to give the child something good to eat."
Jian Dan nodded quickly, saying that she could do it, as she had all kinds of sea cucumbers and abalone.
"Okay, is there anything else? Please tell me, and I'll remember it."
