A few people stood by watching, unsure of what to say.
Cheng Chao herself said that she hadn't eaten properly for two days. In this place, even the basket on her back had been exposed to the elements, so she couldn't just take out something else out of thin air. She could only find some mushrooms and dandelions that they had picked and stuff them into the chicken's belly, hoping to share some of the greasiness and make Cheng Chao's stomach suffer less.
After finishing two chickens, Cheng Chao let out a loud burp, leaned against a tree, and frowned as his wound throbbed. He exhaled heavily.
"Uncle, why did it take you so long to arrive?"
Cheng Jin was so angry he almost laughed.
"I'm too early, won't I make it too late for you to eat?"
Lin Zhengde led his men to investigate, and when they returned, their faces were grim.
"It seems that they need to be thoroughly cleaned up over there. Those who are indulging in their debauchery have no sense of right or wrong, inside or outside, and have even forgotten the national humiliation."
Cheng Jin glanced at him, then at everyone present, and asked the military doctor,
"Where are you injured? Can you still move?"
The military doctor didn't even look up.
"One bullet to the chest, one to the arm, and more than a dozen cuts to the leg, some deep and some shallow. For now, it doesn't seem to have damaged any tendons or veins. We'll need to have it checked more carefully when we get back."
Cheng Jin immediately frowned, gasped, pointed at him angrily, and remained silent for a long time. Cheng Chao grinned and begged for mercy.
Lin Zhengde came over and took a look.
"Alright, stop being angry with him. Hurry up and get him in the car and take him to the hospital."
Jian Dan had just sprinkled some numbing cream on the chicken, and it was starting to take effect. Cheng Chao's eyelids were beginning to feel heavy. Before leaving, he reminded Jian Dan of some important instructions.
"Go home first. I got you some good stuff. I'll bring it to you in a couple of days when I'm better."
Jian Dan felt a dryness in her nose and a tightness in her chest. Seeing this, Cheng Jin came over to comfort her.
"Alright, don't worry, this kid knows what he's doing."
"We've been through this so many times, we'll definitely be fine this time too."
"Uncle, are we going to the hospital in the county town?"
"No need to go through the hassle of going to the county town. Our garrison has also built its own hospital. You can just send him back to the military hospital. Doctors have already been arranged there, so don't worry."
He simply nodded silently.
"Uncle, he'll be alright, won't he?"
Thinking about what Cheng Chao would be going through if she hadn't come over, Jian Dan felt even more distressed.
Cheng Chao meant something different to him compared to others.
Every mission is fraught with danger, and with only this one family member by his side, how could Cheng Jin not worry?
But we have to calm the child down first, so they don't have to live in fear.
"Really, really, don't worry, would your uncle lie to you?"
You go home first, and your uncle will go back to keep an eye on him. If anything happens, your uncle will send someone to let you know, okay?
Simple could only nod.
"Uncle, should we tell my grandfather?"
"Um?"
Cheng Jin hadn't even thought about it. After a moment's thought, he simply waved his hand.
"Forget it, there's no use talking to him. It's too much trouble for him to even come out these days. At this juncture, it's better to keep a low profile."
Besides, this kid's still being stubborn; let's not make things worse.
Simple interpersonal skills are learned through trial and error. With elders present, one naturally listens obediently.
"Okay, I know."
They followed a group of people down the mountain. There were only two girls, and their baskets and prey were naturally snatched away early on. The two girls were quick and agile, but they were in a bad mood and had no mind to say anything else.
Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Jian Dan hesitated before asking the question.
"Uncle, it's getting hot, isn't it easy to get inflammation? Do you have enough anti-inflammatory medicine where you are?"
She wasn't a medical student, so she didn't know exactly what was needed, but after what happened with Jian Wenxiu last summer, she remembered the anti-inflammatory medicine by heart.
Cheng Jin didn't think about it any other way, and irritably ruffled his hair.
"That's for sure, it's getting hotter and hotter, ugh, it's so worrying!"
The others helped Cheng Chao into the car. No sooner had Cheng Jin finished speaking than the army doctor came over to complain.
"Political Commissar, I'm going back to arrange the surgery. You need to find a way to get the missing parts as soon as possible!"
Cheng Jin became even more agitated.
"Okay, okay, let's get the surgery done right away."
"Okay, okay, think about it, otherwise it could be dangerous later on."
Seeing everyone board the bus, Cheng Jin was also preparing to leave, but Jian Dan couldn't resist.
"Uncle, why don't you ask around and see what they need? I'll try to figure something out. After all, I've lived in Beijing for over ten years, and I know a bit about my grandfather and maternal grandfather's connections. Maybe I can help? Right?"
Cheng Jin opened his mouth, wanting to say something, when suddenly a thought flashed through his mind. He remembered that when Jian Wenxiu was critically ill last year, this little girl seemed to be there too. Could it be related to her?
He's probably overthinking it.
However, what she said was not wrong. The Jian and Su families had a solid foundation, and they could donate their things. Both old men were philanthropists, and they wouldn't throw away their connections from so many years ago so easily.
"Okay, I'll go ask, but don't worry about it. There are adults here to handle this, so children shouldn't concern themselves with it."
Watching the car drive away, the group of people all breathed a sigh of relief.
"Let's go back, it's getting dark."
Simple concerns were obvious, but no one could dissuade him, after all, Cheng Chao's injuries were real, and it was said that he had been shot in the chest. Even someone who didn't know much could tell how dangerous the situation was.
"Don't worry, the doctor arrived just in time. We'll have the surgery when we get back, and everything will be fine."
Ling Weidong also comforted her.
"Yes, we're laymen, but the military doctor is an expert. Judging from his expression, there's definitely no danger."
"If all else fails, since you're not busy right now, you can ask the village chief for leave and go stay with him for a few days until he's out of danger. Otherwise, with your brother in the hospital, you won't be able to concentrate on anything else, and you'll definitely be distracted at work."
Jian Dan's eyes lit up. That's right, how come she didn't think of that?
Lin Dongfang sighed; he knew it would be like this.
"Alright, alright, the car's already gone. We can't go there in the dark, can we?"
Go home and eat first, then get a good night's sleep. Tomorrow I'll go to the village chief to ask for leave and get a letter of introduction.
Jian Dan felt incredibly stupid. She should have just followed the car; if she needed anything during the surgery, she could have found a way to get it. However, going tomorrow would be fine too; it would be a ready-made excuse to get anything else.
"Yes, I'll go tomorrow, then,"
She looked at the wild goat she had just received.
"Then this sheep,"
If there's no one around, she'll just accept it directly; once it's been made public, it becomes harder to handle.
Lin Dongfang took it directly.
"Give it to me, I'll take it back and pick it up, then bring it to you later. This stuff is very nutritious, it'll be perfect for Brother Chao to take over."
"Oh dear, that's not good!"
Jian Dan was a little embarrassed, but she really didn't have the mind to do the skinning and tendon-pulling work right now.
"You're still embarrassed?"
