Chapter 450 Visiting, Fever

As the military doctor had said, the garrison troops did indeed begin intensive care after returning home.

Having been chased, Cheng Chao was on edge the whole time. He relaxed when he saw Jian Dan, but he was afraid of scaring her, so he was fed ginseng slices. Later, the chicken was mixed with anesthetic, so the pain wasn't as intense and he could still maintain his mental state. He deliberately pretended that nothing was wrong.

Once he got on the bus and arrived at a place where he couldn't see clearly, he completely let his guard down. As soon as the anesthetic took effect, he quickly fell into a deep sleep.

I've been under too much pressure lately, and now that I've suddenly relaxed, all sorts of symptoms have started to appear. Before I even got back to the hospital, I fell into a coma and was immediately taken to the operating room as soon as I got out of the car.

Cheng Jin waited outside the operating room for half the night. By the time the surgery was over, he looked much more haggard.

"How is it? You think you can stay alive?"

The military doctor rubbed his eyes wearily.

"He's lucky; with those ginseng slices to keep him going, he managed to pull through."

I'm not trying to be mean, but why are you hiding such a good thing from me?

"And it has to be family. You don't seem to care at all, giving such a thick slice. Wow, this is the first time I've seen you so generous."

He was just a little jealous, after all, that's what he does. His subconscious reaction to seeing this stuff was naturally how to use it to save more people. Seeing the thick slice of ginseng in Cheng Chao's mouth, he felt a pang of heartache.

He wanted to retort, but Cheng Jin also looked dumbfounded, leaving the military doctor stunned.

"You didn't feed it? Then where did this good stuff come from?"

Cheng Jin opened his mouth but didn't say anything; he had already vaguely guessed what was going on.

Silly child!

After a night's rest, Jian Dan had completely calmed down. What was the use of her being anxious? She wasn't a doctor; at most, she just had more and better things than others.

Yesterday she even fed him ginseng slices. As long as it's not a medical accident, Cheng Chao's life is definitely not in danger. As for the rest, there's nothing she can do to help. Whether it's surgery or cleaning the wound, it depends on the doctor's skills.

The hospital has plenty of experience with these kinds of things; she's just worrying unnecessarily.

All she could do was try to get him any scarce medicines he might need if he really needed them. Oh, and she could also get him some things to help him recover after the surgery.

The next day, Jian Dan went to the village and exchanged a few old hens that the villagers hadn't ordered. Carrying a full basket of things she thought were useful, she had an oxcart deliver them to her residence.

The items weren't complete, but Cheng Jin probably wouldn't rummage through them. She had only put them there as a cover, so that if things came out, they wouldn't cause any unnecessary trouble.

When they arrived, it was already afternoon, and sure enough, Cheng Chao had a fever.

The military doctor was busy trying to lower his fever, while several soldiers stood by anxiously pacing back and forth.

After observing for a while with his basket on his back, he tentatively began to speak.

"Fifth Brother?"

Xiao Wu suddenly turned around.

"Simple Girl? What brings you here?"

I'm not good at remembering people, but last year I spent several days thinking about Xiao Wu, and I remembered her as soon as we met.

A person nearby also ran over quickly.

"Little Jian, what brings you here?"

It looks familiar, but I can't quite place it.

Fortunately, they weren't planning to ask her if she knew them; they were just showing off to their comrades.

"That winter when I was hunting wild boar, I was so grateful to Xiao Jian, the educated youth. Otherwise, I would have lost my life. Xiao Jian was my savior."

Oh, Jian Dan remembered now, the green recruit who once hunted wild boars alongside her.

The others were clearly already very familiar with his words.

"I know, I know, you've said it eight hundred times already."

This commotion actually eased the tense atmosphere a bit.

"Brother Wu, how's my brother? Can we go in to see him now?"

Xiao Wu thought Jian Dan's appearance was just a coincidence, but now that he's said this, everyone knows, so there's no need to hide it anymore.

"The surgery was quite successful when he came back yesterday. The military doctor said he was all better. He might get a fever, and look, he has a fever today."

"We'll go in after the medic comes out."

Seeing Xiao Wu, she was no longer worried about Cheng Chao's post-operative diet. His cooking skills were really good; even her picky palate had to admit it was excellent.

"Is that old hen you're taking for Brother Chao?"

Seeing the chickens tied up in her hand, Xiao Wu quickly took them and helped put the basket down. The weight surprised him. Although he couldn't see what they were, he could guess the weight. After all, he had dealt with her for so many days at the hospital and could tell a bit about her simple nature. She was very generous to her own people.

"Hey girl, you didn't bring all this for Brother Chao, did you? The food for sick soldiers in our unit is pretty good."

Naturally, he knew it couldn't compare to a private meal prepared individually, and he understood this, so he didn't argue with anyone.

“I know, yours are yours, but my brother is injured, and I’m worried about him too. Good things are never too much. He’s always traveling, so I’ll take this opportunity to give him a good boost.”

Xiao Wu and the others nodded in agreement. They were all trusted brothers with Cheng Chao, and naturally they wanted the best for him.

"However, Brother Wu, I can't stay here for long, and besides, my cooking skills aren't very good."

If it's convenient, could you please prepare these things for him when he's ready to eat them?

"Hi,"

Xiao Wu clapped his hands.

"What's the big deal? Linzi and I were sent by the regimental commander to take care of Brother Chao. Isn't this our duty?"

Whether it's a simple or a formal thank you, there's no such thing as "should" or "shouldn't." Even if there is, it's for the army and for Cheng Chao, their comrade-in-arms, not for her.

Just as they were speaking, the ward door opened, and several soldiers rushed in.

"How is Brother Chao? Has his fever gone down?"

"Are you awake? Are you awake?"

"Say something!"

The medic was clearly familiar with them and knew their character, so he remained silent, standing quietly until they finished their monologue before slowly speaking.

"Are you done talking?"

The men were clearly afraid of him.

"Ah, ah, I'm done,"

Seeing this, the military doctor waved his hand somewhat impatiently, making way for the doorway.

"Alright, I know you're worried. The fever's gone down. Go in and check on him. Give him some water. If the fever goes up again, quickly send someone to call me."

Xiao Wu was about to push the door open when he heard this, so he turned around and glared at him.

"Still burning?"

"What do you think? His body is covered in wounds, some of which have been there for several days and are infected. Do you think it's that simple?"

"Alright, hurry up and go inside. If you need anything, just call me. I'll be here for the next few days."

"Oh dear, is this lady here to see this young man too?"
