Jian Dan didn't notice Mingzhu's unusual behavior and smiled.
That's true.
My mom is a gentle person who doesn't care about anything. Besides going to work, she only knows how to care for flowers and plants, and she also reads the letters my dad wrote to her. I was also raised by my maternal grandfather.
My dad wasn't home at that time either, and my grandma and my maternal grandma both passed away early, so I have no memory of them.
On my grandfather's side, it's said that my father had two twin uncles, but I only heard them mention it casually by the two old men. They said they didn't know if they would ever see them again. Anyway, until they passed away, these two never appeared.
They rarely mention it, probably because they don't want me to know. Even when I asked, they wouldn't tell me. I don't know the specifics, otherwise I could have thought of a solution.
"Oh? There are still people in your family?"
"Don't even mention it to me, I find it unbelievable."
My family isn't very large; there are only a few of us, and we all live our own lives. That's why nobody knows anyone else.
Those two old men, it seems, left many years ago. Apparently, my dad wasn't even married then. I don't know if they joined the army or did something else; they didn't elaborate.
However, I didn't see them when they were alive, and I didn't expect to meet them when I did.
It's quite a pity that they were still thinking about it on their deathbeds.
Mingzhu nodded, recalling her situation at the time.
"That's true. The children are all away from home. What parent wouldn't worry about them?"
Why!
In these years of war, how many families have been separated like this? Tell me, how many people, like your two grandfathers, have worried about each other their whole lives, and couldn't close their eyes in peace even on their deathbeds?
"Hi!"
She knew, of course, that such things happened all the time. Even in the era of rapid development she lived in her previous life, there were still occasional instances of relatives who were forced to separate during wartime reuniting.
However, more than half a century of separation has not only separated different lives and different experiences, but also brought both sides not only surprises when they met again and charged forward.
Noticing the atmosphere was steadily shifting towards a somber and oppressive tone, Jian Dan feigned nonchalance.
"This is not something we ordinary people should worry about. I guess they didn't tell me because they didn't want me to worry about it."
The country will only get better and better in the future. Who knows, one day someone might knock on my door and say, "I'm your boss, I'll protect you from now on." Wouldn't I then be able to turn my life around and lie down comfortably?
Mingzhu was still feeling sad when she was suddenly amused by her antics and burst out laughing.
"Ha ha!
You really dare to dream, even lying down like that.
She uses this word often, and she's gotten used to it.
"It's as if you're working hard right now,"
Don't think she can't see through it. Apart from going to work with everyone else and getting all excited when it comes to going up the mountain, this little girl avoids everything else and is lazy whenever possible. She has no interest in anything else.
I don't know whether to call her lazy or hardworking.
"ah,"
Simple stared wide-eyed.
"You actually noticed? Sister Zhuzhu, your eyes are too sharp!"
"So affected! It's so fake,"
Mingzhu rolled her eyes without any politeness.
"Am I just sharp-eyed? Go out and ask around. Isn't your attitude obvious enough?"
Everyone in the village knows that aside from going to work, hunting, and climbing the mountains, you don't need to be called for anything else; even if you were, you wouldn't budge.
Simply pointed to himself.
"Am I really like this?"
That shouldn't be the case. I would go even if they were distributing grain and meat.
Mingzhu remained silent.
"Anyone who doesn't go when the grain and meat are distributed is a fool!"
"I want meat! Auntie, I want to eat meat!"
After listening for a while, Xiao Huizhou only understood this one sentence, and quickly ran over to make her request.
"My aunt eats meat too, and so does my mother."
"Okay, okay, let's eat meat,"
Jian Dan spoils this child even more than his parents do.
"I just finished eating, can my tummy still eat now?"
How about we eat watermelon first, and then have meat for dinner?
The child looked back at his mother, somewhat surprised.
"watermelon?"
Mingzhu was also somewhat surprised.
"Your watermelon is still fine after being kept here all this time?"
There's no such thing as food becoming unhealthy after being stored for a long time. If it can be stored for a while, then it's safe to eat.
Furthermore, although the simple thing is said to be placed in the cellar, it is actually in the space, so there is no risk of it being unhealthy.
“My cellar is cool, it’s almost frozen.”
The half of the watermelon from lunchtime was still in the kitchen. She cut it into small pieces and took it directly to the yard.
"Come on, Zhouzhou, eat some watermelon first,"
It wasn't summer yet, but the afternoon sun was still quite strong. Little Huizhou ran around for a while, and beads of sweat had formed on his forehead. He took a bite of cool, sweet watermelon, and the child was delighted; his eyes immediately crinkled with a smile.
"It's sweet! Mom, have some! Auntie, have some!"
Seeing her son enjoying his meal, Mingzhu couldn't help but feel happy too.
“Every time he comes, you have fresh food here. No wonder he keeps asking to come. He has a good nose and a discerning mouth. He probably finds out what's good in the food.”
"What are you saying? It's only because you've gone to the countryside. If you were still in the capital, Xiaozhou would be cherished by both of your families. What's a little food compared to that?"
Besides, he calls me "Auntie" too, doesn't he, Xiaozhou?
"Uh-huh,"
The child's face was covered in watermelon juice, and he didn't understand anything, just nodding randomly. Mingzhu couldn't stand it anymore and scolded him with a laugh.
“Look at what he built.”
Actually, over the past few years, we've gotten used to life here. Although we may not have a lot of material things, my in-laws really dote on him. They send him clothes, snacks, money, and so on at least once a month.
