Jian Dan was located on a corner of the wall not far from the gate, and from there, the courtyard was completely silent.
He moved deeper into the courtyard, stepping over the wall. He quickly climbed down and entered the yard, disappearing behind a large rock. Two night patrolmen passed by the rock; the shorter one was still complaining.
"Brother, why are you out in this heavy rain? These rules are too strict. Does anyone in the capital really dare to mess with the Peng family?"
The burly man beside him gave a light rebuke.
"Don't talk nonsense. Have you forgotten what we were told? We can never be careless."
"Okay, okay, brother, let's hurry up and go back for a drink after we finish patrolling. It's so damp and humid outside, a warm drink will make us feel much better."
This time, the burly man didn't object.
"Go to the front yard, I'll go back to the main yard and take a look. I need to give some more instructions about the study and storeroom."
After a slight hesitation, Jian quietly followed the person heading to the main courtyard. The sound of the heavy rain was so soft that it wouldn't attract any attention. The person looked around, adjusted their raincoat, and then strode away.
I simply held my breath and didn't get too close, only moving along the eaves, artificial hills, large vats, flowers and plants, and other places where I could hide at any time.
The entire journey was pitch black, and the rooms on both sides were completely dark and silent. Clearly, they were either still empty and unoccupied, or the residents were already asleep.
The courtyard was quite large. It took the burly man a good twenty minutes to walk before he could vaguely see a few figures ahead. It was only because of his good eyesight that he could see them; otherwise, they would have been nothing but a dark mass.
As the burly man approached, several dark figures greeted him in unison.
"Big brother!"
"Hmm, is there anything suspicious about you or anyone?"
"No, brother, in this awful weather, who would come? It's so late, it would be nice to have some hot drinks!"
"Alright, enough with the nonsense. Just keep watch, and I'll take you out for Peking duck tomorrow."
"Hey, really, brother? Going again tomorrow? That's great! I'll have to have a good time. And that kid Yang He, if we manage to take him down, do you think the young master will give us credit?"
The burly man clearly didn't want to talk about this topic.
"Alright, alright, we can't be careless even on a hot day. Everyone stay alert and don't let anyone take advantage of us."
Watching him disappear into the rain, and waiting a while longer, the people in front of him also became drowsy. Jian Dan stretched his hands and feet, ready to get back to work.
Although I didn't hear any more useful information, I wasn't disappointed. With such high walls and tight security, who would believe there wasn't anything good inside?
On the surface, there are only a few people, but they have been able to live peacefully under the emperor's nose for so many years. Who knows if they have any secret guards up their sleeves?
Although she didn't realize it, she wasn't arrogant.
She only wanted to do good deeds anonymously.
Thinking this, she secretly took out a sleeping pill and threw it over. She didn't have much of this stuff in stock, and if she didn't want to attract attention, she really wouldn't have used it.
A few minutes later, the shadowy figures moved slowly, and after a while, they finally collapsed one after another, unable to hold on any longer.
Actually, the last person had already realized something was wrong, but it was too late. He couldn't even lift his finger, let alone call for help.
Seeing this, he simply chuckled a few times, went into his space to change into a pair of large-sized rain boots, quickly returned to his original spot, and walked to the door in the rain.
A large brass padlock hung at the door. It was a lock-and-open type. In later generations, there were smart locks, combination locks, and fingerprint locks. This was child's play for her. She poked at it a few times with a black clip, and with a "click," the padlock opened immediately.
After looking around and finding nothing, he slipped inside and pushed the door open.
Outside the wall, the man lingered where Jian Dan had simply disappeared, glancing up from time to time with undisguised worry in his eyes. He kept a watchful eye on the area, ready to clean up the mess at any moment.
Inside the warehouse, Jian Dan's eyes widened. She had seen good things before, but this was still amazing. No wonder they were a bandit family; these good things were dazzling.
Not to mention the daily necessities, there were brand-new fabrics, cotton, piles of ready-made clothes, shoes, stacks of cotton overcoats, bags of grain, and baskets of eggs, all in heaps. That huge pile of grain alone weighed at least several thousand kilograms.
The room on the left is filled with vegetables and fruits. Who would have thought that even in this lean season, the Peng family has a full stock of vegetables and fruits? Not to mention the winter cabbages, potatoes, and radishes, there are also plenty of bright green spinach, cucumbers, garland chrysanthemum, and bitter lettuce. The people in this big courtyard could eat for several meals.
There wasn't much fresh meat, less than ten pigs' worth, probably delivered to your door like vegetables. But there was plenty of ham, bacon, and various dried chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits.
The shelves in the next room were clearly more expensive, with beef, bird's nest, brown sugar, white sugar, and all sorts of snacks, pastries, candies, and chocolates that I'd never seen before, some of which were obviously imported.
While items in overseas Chinese stores are usually limited in quantity, here they can be purchased in wholesale quantities.
In the innermost room, bicycles, radios, and sewing machines were displayed on the shelves as if they were free, gathering dust. Even watch boxes were crammed together, showing no sign of being worth hundreds of dollars.
"Tsk tsk! It's a waste to just leave it here to collect dust. I'll use it for you."
While complaining, they accepted everything without any hesitation.
However, although there were quite a few items, it was clear that this could not be all the inventory; it was more like a temporary warehouse for daily use.
He walked around the warehouse twice, stroking his chin, and then decisively took out the detector.
